scelto per il nuovo allestimento.
Il progetto Riddled di Horm, disegnato da
Steven Holl, è stato scelto dalla Triennale Design
Museum di Milano per il progetto di allestimento
“Serie e fuori serie”, un nuovo percorso che esplora
il tema della produzione nella storia del design
italiano. L’esposizione “Serie e Fuori Serie” -
aperta al pubblico da marzo 2009 - indaga il
rapporto dinamico fra produzione industriale e
sperimentazione avanzata ed il ruolo del prototipo,
o del pezzo unico, all’interno del contesto produttivo.
Il contenitore aereo Riddled, realizzato in soli 39+39
pezzi numerati e firmati dall’autore, nasce dalla ricerca del
grande Architetto americano sul movimento ludico della luce
e delle porosità del legno, esercizio che dà vita un leggerissimo
diamante ligneo.

The project Riddled by Horm, designed by
Steven Holl, was chosen by the Triennale Design
Museum in Milan for its new display project
“Serie e fuori serie”, a new exhibition that explores
the theme of production in the history of Italian
design. The exposition “Serie e Fuori Serie” -
scheduled to start in March and continue
through the next 14 months - investigates the dynamic
relationship between industrial manufacturing and
advanced experimentation, and the role of the prototype,
or single piece, inside the production context. The airy
container called Riddled by Steven Holl - named Time Magazine
America’s Best Architect in 2001 - was made with only 39+39
numbered pieces that are signed by the author. The project arises
from the famous American architect’s research into the playful
movement of light and the porosity of wood, an exercise that has
created an ultra-light wooden diamond.

Una architettura effimera che riprende gli
ultimi progetti architettonici di Toyo Ito, come
il Relaxation Park di Torrevieja, in Spagna: una
grande onda dolce e flessuosa, che ha conquistato
tutti, e dopo il primo allestimento al Salone del 2005,
è diventata set fotografico, padiglione per mostre
a Pordenone e a Pescara fino a diventare scenografico
ingresso di un edificio a Shangai. E non è ancora finita…

Shanghai. The neverending wave.
An ephemeral architecture similar to some
of Toyo Ito’s recent projects, such as the
Relaxation Park in Torrevieja, Spain: a big, delicate
and flexible wave that captured everybody’s
attention. After the first installation at the Salone (Milan
2005) it has become a shooting set, an exhibition pavilion
in Pordenone and Pescara and finally a scenographical entrance
to a building in Shanghai. And still, it is not over yet…

Il Compasso d’Oro è un riconoscimento
nato nel ’54 su iniziativa della Rinascente
per premiare l’eccellenza nel campo del design.
Oggi viene conferito dall’ADI, l’Associazione per
il Disegno Industriale. Horm ha collezionato diversi
successi, dall’assegnazione per le istruzioni di montaggio,
per la panca Ripples e per l’allestimento dello Stand progettato
nel 2005 da Toyo Ito, alle Segnalazioni dei tavoli Tola (il ‘papà’
di Astor) e Wow!, del letto Sottiletto, del packaging del tavolino Take
e del contenitore Tide disegnato da Karim Rashid.

1954 by Rinascente, with the aim of rewarding
excellence in the design field. Nowadays it is given
by ADI, Associazione per il Disegno Industriale.
Horm received various awards, such as the Segnalazioni
for the Tola (the ‘father’ of Astor) and Wow! tables, the
Sottiletto bed and the packaging of the Take small table, and
the Compasso d’Oro for the Ripples bench as well as one
for the assembly instruction.

the event and during the inauguration, with the

project. An event that involved the company, the
showrooms, some friends that ended up as partners
and Mario Bellini, who together with a special edition of

leather dressed with nerobianco wood.

Il lungo tunnel che collega i padiglioni della fiera
è stato pensato da Toyo Ito come un fiume che
trasporta persone e cose da un luogo all’atro, tanto
da usare cementi di diverse tonalità di azzurro per
dare la sensazione dell’acqua in movimento.
È possibile sostare grazie alle panche Ripples, nella versione
standard e in una speciale curvata, entrambe perfette per l’uso
in ambienti pubblici.

The long tunnel that connects the fair pavilions
has been thought by Toyo Ito as a river that
moves people and things from one place to another.
He reinforced the sensation of flowing water
using different tones of blue to color the concrete.
It is also possible to rest, thanks to Ripples benches,
in the standard or curved version, both perfect for the
public space use.

E naturalmente Horm. Nell’allestimento, oltre ai prodotti,
sono stati usati gli stand progettati per il Salone di
Milano nel 2004 e nel 2005. La mostra è stata a Santiago

Ideated by Abacoarchitettura, this itinerant
exhibition displayed the progression of ideas
of the architect as a designer. An activity that
started few years ago and that at the beginning was
related only with Italian companies such as Alessi,

Horm. In the installation, not only the products were
shown, but also the booths designed for the Milan

La biblioteca progettata da Toyo Ito è composta
da una serie di archi disposti lungo linee curve,
pensati per dividere lo spazio senza impedire
la circolazione dei flussi e la percezione globale
dell’edificio. Le sedie Cherish, nella versione grezza,
ben si integrano con gli arredi progettati o scelti

Charlotte, the wicker armchair that Mario Botta
designed as a homage to Charlotte, the widow
of the Swiss writer Friedrich Durrenmatt, has been
widely used to complete exhibitions and event

Horm utilizza per alcuni dei suoi prodotti, come

Un sandwich di legno di soli 2,2 mm di spessore,
il cui strato centrale funziona da cerniera, consentendo
la progettazione di mini architetture scultoree dalla grande
pulizia formale.

An exhibition in the Material Connexion space
presented the innovative material that Horm
is using for some of their products, such as the
furniture pieces designed by Steven Holl and
Diego Vencato. It is a wooden sandwich that is only 2,2
mm thick, whose inner layer works as hinge, allowing
the opportunity to design sculptural architecture on a small
scale, creating an impressive formal simplicity.

Alvaro Joaquim de Melo Siza Vieira è nato a
Matosinhos (Porto) nel 1933. Ha lavorato dal
1955 al 1958 con Fernando Tàvora e subito
dopo ha aperto il suo studio professionale a
Porto, dove ancora oggi svolge la sua attività.
Oltre che a Porto Siza ha insegnato in diverse
università degli Stati Uniti, in Sud America
e in Svizzera. Invitato a partecipare a molti
concorsi internazionali ha costruito opere
prestigiose, tra le più importanti ricordiamo il
Padiglione portoghese all’Expo di Lisbona ‘98,
il Museo d’arte contemporanea di Santiago di
Compostela, la chiesa di Marco de Canavezes
premiata nel 2000 dalla Fondazione Frate
Sole quale migliore chiesa costruita in quel
periodo. Siza ha ricevuto altri importanti
riconoscimenti tra i quali il Premio Mies van
der Rohe, la medaglia d’oro della Fondazione
Alvar Aalto, l’Arold W. Brunner Memorial Prize,
il Praemium Imperiale. Numerose università di
tutto il mondo gli hanno attribuito lauree ad
honorem.
Alvaro Joaquim de Melo Siza Vieira was
born in Matosinhos (Porto) in 1933. From

Chiristof Burtscher nasce in Austria nel 1964
e si forma come maestro falegname e scultore
in Austria. Partizia Bertolini, italiana, nasce nel
1962, studia arte e si diploma in Industrial
Design presso l’Isia di Roma. Compagni di
classe all’Istituto Europeo di Design di Milano
cominciano a sviluppare i primi progetti in
Comune e a mescolare i loro diversi caratteri
progettuali. Collaborano dal 1991, dapprima
a Vienna, poi si spostano a Bolzano dove, nel
1995, aprono uno studio di progettazione.
Impegnati soprattutto nel settore
dell’arredamento, alternando la loro ricerca
tra “studio a tavolino” e laboratorio dove
costruiscono e sviluppano prototipi.
Partecipano a mostre, vengono selezionati e
qualche volta premiati a vari concorsi.
Da segnalare è il 1° premio ottenuto nelle
edizioni del 1997 e 1998 di “Young & Design”.
Christoph Burtscher e Patrizia Bertolini -
Chiristof Burtscher was born in Austria in
1964. He started as master-carpenter and
wood carver. Patrizia Bertolini was born in
Italy in 1964 and graduated from Rome ISIA,
department of Industrial Design. They met
at Istituto Europeo di Design in Milan, where
they started to work together mixing their
different projective styles. 1991 they were in
Vienna and then moved to Bolzano (Italy)
where they started their new studio in 1995.
Their preference goes to the furnishing sector
and their prototypes are the result of research
work combined with workshop activity. Their
names can be found in several exhibitions and
competitions. They were awarded with first
prize at “Young & Design” 1997 and 1998.

Carlo Cumini nasce a Gemona del Friuli
(UD) nel 1953 dove tuttora opera
professionalmente. Conclude nel 1974 gli studi
tecnici presso l’Istituto Marinoni di Udine e
inizia a lavorare nell’azienda di famiglia quale
addetto alla progettazione e vendita di arredi
per la casa. Dal 1979 al 1984 progetta singoli
pezzi di arredamento che diventano seriali
per l’azienda Cumini a partire dal 1985 e per
Horm dalla sua fondazione nel 1989. Nel 1993
inizia ad avvicinarsi agli arredi per esterni e
partecipa alla realizzazione di alcuni prodotti
del “giardino di pietra” per “Il Laboratorio
del Marmo”. Nel 1995 presenta a Udine
Emporio Casa Cumini e sempre in quell’anno
inizia la collaborazione con Alberto Freschi,
imprenditore di Conegliano e Bancolini Carlo
che vive e lavora a Marrakech dove esplora
l’artigianalità del posto.

Daniele Gaspardo nasce a Pordenone
nel 1966. Grazie al padre falegname può
apprendere fin da ragazzo le tecniche utilizzate
nella lavorazione del legno. Terminati gli studi
si forma professionalmente operando presso
un’azienda che produce cucine componibili.
Dal 2001 lavora come insegnante alle scuole
superiori e presta la sua attività di libero
professionista nel settore legno-arredo.
Daniele Gaspardo was born in Pordenone
in 1966. As a young boy, he began learning
woodworking techniques from his father, a
carpenter. When he finished his studies, he
gained professional expertise as an employee
of a company that produces modular kitchens.
Since 2001, he has been working as a high
school teacher, and also as a freelance artisan
in the wood-furniture sector.

Il 1980 è il primo anno di attività del Gruppo
Grafite composto dagli architetti Laura De
Lorenzo, Luca Leonori e Stefano Stefani. Nel
corso della loro attività hanno conseguito
diversi riconoscimenti tra cui ben otto
segnalazioni per il Compasso d’Oro. Il Gruppo
opera a Roma da diversi anni nel campo del
disegno industriale, particolarmente nel settore
del mobile. La linea progettuale del gruppo è
di impostazione funzionalista con particolare
attenzione alla ricerca di nuovi materiali
e nuove tecnologie. Grafite usa definire il
proprio lavoro “design in movimento”, inteso
come design di ricerca e come capacità dei
suoi prodotti di assumere configurazioni
diverse. Grafite conserva la propria
impostazione di tipo funzionalista, opponendo
la dinamicità del design di ricerca alla staticità
del design formale. Obiettivo del gruppo è
fornire prodotti innovativi con l’impiego di
meccanismi elementari e di basso costo.

Il primo progetto nato dalla collaborazione
con Horm è la sedia Pack, eletta Sedia

Un’ evoluzione impilabile della stessa è Stack
presentata al Salone di Milano nel 2001 dove
ha riscosso un notevole successo immediato.
Timo Saarnio was born in Helsinki in 1944.
