Inductive Listening
Notate each harmonic dictation on a grand staff. The first bass pitch is given. The answers
for some progressions are notated in SATB style; for others, keyboard style. Practice
notating both styles or in the style indicated by your teacher.

After writing the key signature, focus on the bass line. Beneath the bass pitches, write
Roman numerals that represent the harmony. If more than one chord seems possible,
write all the possibilities and choose the correct one after additional hearings. Focus last
on the soprano. Figure its starting pitch from your earlier work, and use its pitches to
refine your chord choices.
