Time present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future,
And time future contained in time past.
If all time is eternally present
All time is unredeemable.
What might have been is an abstraction
Remaining a perpetual possibility
Only in a world of speculation.
What might have been and what has been
Point to one end, which is always present.
Footfalls echo in the memory
Down the passage which we did not take
Towards the door we never opened
Into the rose-garden. My words echo
Thus, in your mind.
Tempo presente e tempo passato
sono forse entrambi presenti nel tempo futuro
e il tempo futuro è contenuto nel tempo passato.
Se tutto il tempo è eternamente presente
tutto il tempo è irredimibile.
Ciò che avrebbe potuto essere è astrazione
che rimane possibilità perpetua
solo nel mondo della speculazione.
Ciò che avrebbe potuto essere e ciò che è stato
mirano a un solo fine che è sempre presente.
Eco di passi nella memoria
giù per il corridoio che non prendemmo
verso la porta che non aprimmo
mai, nel giardino delle rose.
Eco delle mie parole, così, nella vostra mente.
