moti che percorsero l’Europa del 1848. E pochissimi seppero vedere in quale immenso mare di sangue
sarebbero sfociate, nel nuovo secolo, tutte le correnti rivoluzionarie, socialiste, anarchiche, comuniste,
nazionaliste e atee che allora vennero soffocate. Fra questi ultimi va certamente annoverato lo spagnolo Donoso
Cortés. Consigliere della regina Isabella II e ambasciatore a Berlino e a Parigi, morto nel 1853 a poco più di
quarant’anni, Cortés univa in sé le doti di un «consumato diplomatico di professione» e la tempra del «profeta
escatologico», che sapeva trasmettere una visione disperata della storia con pennellate degne di Goya. Nel
contempo, la capacità di dare una interpretazione perfettamente lucida degli eventi cui assisteva gli consentì di
percepire come nessun altro il senso autentico dell’enorme opera di rimozione che l’Europa stava mettendo in
atto negli ultimi decenni del XIX secolo, contrassegnati dalla prosperità economica e dal progresso tecnico.
Dopo la sua morte, «l’odio terribile, spesso satanico» dei nemici lo condannò all’oblio. Settanta anni più tardi,
quando la maschera dell’ottimismo positivistico era ormai definitivamente caduta, fu Carl Schmitt a cogliere,
con mirabile empatia teorica e storico-politica, il significato delle previsioni che Donoso Cortés aveva formulato
nell’isolamento più profondo – e a trovare in lui, come già in Thomas Hobbes, un grande ispiratore del proprio
pensiero politico.
I quattro saggi qui raccolti furono stesi fra il 1922 e il 1944 e pubblicati poi in volume, con una nuova
