Ora, di fronte all’im-
acquistare e perfino divertirci è profondamente mutato. A grande velocità stanno cam-
Insomma, ci interessa raccontare come abitiamo. Silvia Botti
/ FROM THIS ISSUE Abitare is changing. It is a new phase in the long history of a
magazine that has been recounting the great changes that have taken place in every peri-
od since 1961 through architecture and design. Over the course of the last three years Abi-
tare has taken on a new guise. We have chosen first of all to make it a tool of information
and analysis, broadening the range of our interests from architecture to design in all its
forms, including the landscape, cities, art and technology. Now, in the face of the sudden
acceleration in every process of change, the time has come to take another step. Our ways
of living, thinking, working, communicating, moving around, buying things and even hav-
ing fun have profoundly altered. The spaces in which we live and work are changing at
great speed, as are the ones where we study, go on holiday or do the shopping; the objects
we use, our means of transport and the instruments we use to communicate are all chang-
ing. For the world of design it is an extraordinary opportunity. New areas are opening up
and we are venturing into unfamiliar dimensions. Abitare wants to recount all this. It will
do so by choosing a particular point of view, that of people. What interests us is to inves-
tigate and understand the relationships they establish with places, spaces and objects. In
short, we are interested in looking at the way we live.

undicesima edizione
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors recently voted unanimously to ban the sale of fur within the city
limits. It is the first large city in the United States to pass such a measure. Another step in the policy of
protecting animal species that up until now has centred on the prohibition of raising animals for their
fur. As if to say enough of the logic of “you can do it, but not here”. It is interesting that it is a city that has
taken this decision and it confirms a trend now visible all over the world. It is the large urban areas – the
cause of most pollution and impoverishment of nature and in general guilty of the greatest attacks on the
environment – that are seeking remedies and going down new roads. A clear sign that the intelligence of
a city can no longer be measured on the basis of its technological level, but should instead be gauged in
terms of its ability to act responsibly.

roots lie in a wide range of citations, teachings and theories. The 45-year-
old Mexican architect spoke to Abitare and revealed one of the sources of
inspiration for her design. “The Dutch master Aldo van Eyck emphasized
an innate need on the part of architecture: to breathe. To breathe in what
surrounds it, and bring it inside, and immediately after to breathe it out,
fusing with the environment.”
Spatial organization plays a fundamental role in this sense. “We have bro-
ken down the functions of the house and laid them out around a pool with
an organic shape. In this way we have imposed the relationship with na-
ture: to move from the kitchen to the bedrooms you have to pass through a
piece of woodland, exposing yourself to cold, rain, heat, insects etc.” Each
space has its own unique character. The mirrored glass surface of the vol-
ume containing the social area – an allusion to the site-specific works of
the artist Dan Graham with whom Bilbao worked in 2012 on the botanical
garden at Culiacán – is just one, perhaps the most obvious, of the mate-
rials adopted by the practice to put this symbiosis between building and
landscape into effect.
This volume is located at ground level, while the L-shaped complex clad

not stop here. The fact of not having to work to a tight schedule has al-

progettuali», spiega Sonia Calzoni, titolare dello studio.

plicandosi in infinte varianti».

IT’S SMALL BUT HAS A LOT OF PERSONALITY, the Milanese flat with
a glass rear wall on two levels that, through the sliding wooden frame,
faces onto the balcony and the verdant panorama of Parco Sempione,
letting natural light into the recently renovated interior. The project of
the architect Alessandra Dalloli has bet on the strength of this origi-
nal structural element, which defines all 42 of the mini duplexes in the
block of service flats at Via Bertani 10, designed in the second half of
the 1960s by Giulio Minoletti for the use of Alitalia pilots: a severe build-
ing with an imposing two-storey base surmounted by three running
galleries, in which are set the residences, which in this case as in the
others, have an area of less than 70 square metres including the loft.
This wooden element has been echoed in the new flooring of horizon-
tal walnut planks embellished with strips of brushed brass that run
parallel to the length of the open space, where living room and kitch-
en are combined. The latter has been bespoke designed with a top of

the floor, while for the living room, in addition to the reutilization of
the existing sideboard, historic designer pieces have been chosen,
like Isamu Noguchi’s Coffee Table by Vitra and Achille Castiglioni’s
Parentesi lamp by Flos. An old foundry crucible serves as a pot for a
tall tropical plant that emphasizes the verticality of the space and the
walls plastered with grey stucco. The second level houses bedroom
and bathroom, faced entirely with large stoneware tiles and fitted
with a sliding door that offers a view of the park from the shower
cabin too. Behind the bed, a wooden framework holds panes of pink
smoke-grey opal glass that at night turn into backlit light boxes, but
whose primary function is to bring natural light into the walk-in
wardrobe, and from there into the bathroom as well through glazed
inserts. A system of home automation allows the configuration of dif-
ferent lighting environments all over the flat.

zionati all’interno dell’attuale produzione), nonché nella

ous spaces which are to be used for social life. These are
spaces and not rooms, because the distinctive feature of
the design is precisely that it has no real internal subdi-
visions but distinguishes the different locations through
their specific architectural characterization. “The plan is
the generator,” as Le Corbusier once argued. And this is
a principle with which the designer of this house seems
to agree. From the plan, in fact, came the elevations and
sections of the building, which forms a continuous and
fluid unfolding and interpenetration of volumes of differ-
ent heights (three storeys at the most, including the base-
ment). Yet Raboni considers himself to be an architect of
interiors because his aim is to “get the best out of the space
available”. This propensity is evident not only in the ar-
chitectural design of the composition and its details, but
also in the careful study of all the furniture (made to his
own design or selected from the current range of produc-
tion), as well in the choice of facings of stone, wood or
brick made by skilled Italian and German workers.

then in the direction of the sleeping area. This last sequence introduces
the need for privacy, provided by an oak wood partition – which can be
used to separate or unite the two rooms when required – but which, as it
is fitted with three sliding doors, also becomes a container-wardrobe. As
the designer says: “Right from the start I felt that I would do everything
I could to let the space flow from one façade to the other”. Between the
kitchen and the living room runs a stone counter of varying shape that
houses the cooking range and then broadens to create a surface for din-
ing. Even the materials used drive home the idea of a flow of time and
space. They pass from the original brickwork left open to view to newly
applied white plastering, from the existing ceiling with exposed beams
to steel, and then to the new wooden panels and industrial flooring. On
the original walls, the name of the apartment “Músico” (a tribute to the
musician José Iturbi, born a few doors down) and a series of signs with
the names of various streets in London, where the owner lives.

Chiara Andreatti
1981

At the last edition of Design Miami Chiara Andreatti was very convinc-
ing with her collection for Fendi, on which artisanal expertise and design
were very effectively brought together. At the Milan Furniture Fair she will
be judged in particular on a product for Gebrüder Thonet Vienna and the
Taiki lounge chair for Lema, noted for its pronounced upholstery reminis-

cent of Le Corbusier and Perriand’s sofas, but with more contemporary pro-
portions. The young designer trained under Piero Lissoni, whose minimalist
approach has left its mark on her, although she likes to include unique arti-
sanal elements of her own. She now continues to work as art director for the
firms she has been associated with for some time. That work includes rugs
for Karpeta and the new Textura wallpaper, which will be presented during
the Fuorisalone in a joint installation with the iconic brand Paradiso Ter-
restre, in the Porta Venezia district. Creatives from different backgrounds
were involved in the collection and the result clearly conveys Chiara’s sense
of decoration: the designs range widely from larger-than-life graphic and
abstract patterns to revisitations of the world of nature and architecture.

He is interdisciplinary, free-spirited, passionate and also multi-talented
(his recent projects include an aircraft cockpit for AgustaWestand), so like
others can happily work on both interior design projects and product devel-
opment. This sums up the design approach adopted by Antonio Facco. At
this year’s Furniture Fair he continues his long-standing partnership with
the Cappellini brand, for which he is involved on various projects, present-
ing his series of Luce tables, bought also by the MoMa Store in New York.
These latter items and the Mondo sculpture-lamp, designed for Swedish
publisher Oblure, well express Facco’s borderline vision: he says he has al-
ways been interested in the ways in which his work can spill over into the
realm of art – especially Italian art of the 1960s – bringing an extra richness
to how his objects are perceived. So while the colour variation of the table
comes from the use of coloured glass, the lamp features a graphic, dynamic
shade whose overlap system produces changing effects.

There is an ironic note in Ferruccio Laviani’s new design
for Fratelli Boffi, who this time has taken on the classic styles of late-
1940s Italian furnishings. In particular he has fun with the design
on Muriel, a six-door cabinet with ribbed fronts. It is thinner on one side,
which creates the illusion that the unit is disappearing into the wall.
