LA LEGGENDA DI COLA PESCE

La leggenda racconta di Colapesce, un marinaio vissuto ai tempi di Federico II, non completamente un essere umano, ma mezzo uomo e mezzo pesce, capace di vivere sul fondo del mare e in grado di conoscerne i pericoli, come le correnti, il forte vento di scirocco e i terremoti, sempre in agguato in Sicilia, soprattutto nella zona dello Stretto di Messina. Era un uomo molto generoso ed altruista e la sua bont danimo era ricompensata dallabbondanza del suo pescato. Un giorno, limperatore, venuto a sapere delle particolarissime doti del marinaio, e avendo a cuore le sorti della sua amata isola, gli chiese di andare a vedere su cosa poggiasse la Sicilia. Cos Colapesce, si tuff in mare e, giunto in fondo, si accorse che lisola poggiava su tre colonne e che quella che sosteneva la parte settentrionale della Sicilia stava per crollare. Allora, temendo che la sua Messina potesse sprofondare da un momento allaltro, volle sostituirsi ad essa e corse a sorreggerla, per non farla spezzare.

Ed ancora l che sorregge quella colonna e protegge Messina dai terremoti. Quando Cola un po stanco, Messina ondeggia e vacilla, ma mai potr succedere nulla perch Cola ama la sua citt pi di s stesso e la sorregger in eterno. Colapesce, pur essendo umano con tutti i difetti di tale condizione, riesce ad essere eroe cos da arrivare al sacrificio della propria vita per proteggere la sua terra.

Il re chiama Colapesce e gli affida il compito di controllare il fondo marino.

Colapesce vede che una delle colonne che sorregge la Sicilia spezzata, allora lui stesso si sacrifica prendendo il posto della colonna che sostiene la sua amata isola.

THE LEGEND OF COLAPESCE

The legend narrates about Colapesce, a sailorman who lived in Frederick IIs times and who was not completely a human being, but half a man and half a fish and who could live underwater and know its dangers, such as the streams, the strong wind called Sirocco and the earthquakes that are so frequent in Sicily, especially in the Straits of Messina. He was a very generous and altruistic man and he was always rewarded for the goodness of his hearth with good hauls of fish.

One day, the emperor got to know about his vertues and being worried about The geological situation of Sicily, asked him to go underwater and see on What Sicily laid. So Colapesce plunged into the sea and when he touched the ground he realized that the island was placed on three columns and noticed That the one that supported the north part of Sicily was about to collapse because

It was broken. So, being afraid that Messina could suddenly sink, he took the place Of the column. And he is still there sustaining the island and protecting Messina From the earthquakes. When Cola is tired, Messina waves and totters, but nothing Will ever happen, because Cola loves his city and he will sustain it forever.

Even if Colapesce is a human being with all the limitations due to The human condition, he becomes a hero and sacrifices his life to protect his land.

Colapesce notices that one of the three columns which sustain Sicily is broken, so he sacrifice himself and takes the place of that column : Sicily is safe!

E un canto che racconta la vita del marinaio di ieri. Il marinaio siciliano uno sventurato che soffre per la precariet della sua condizione, legata agli alti e bassi della pesca, ma che riesce anche a godere di piccoli momenti di spensieratezza, scialacquando il poco guadagnato e non pensando mai ad accantonare qualcosa per il futuro.

Its a song which talks about the Sicilian sailormen. They suffered because of the precariousness of their condition, linked to the ups and downs of fishing. But when they earned some money, they used to squander it rather than save it for the future.
