Dear Principal Chou and PS 184 Shuang Wen SLT,
Thank you for your feedback regarding the space in PS 184. Our goal is to
ensure that all students have access to high quality educational options. At
times this involves making difficult decisions regarding the space in DOE
buildings in order to meet the needs of all students.
We understand the concerns you have about available space in the M137
building. Based on the feedback we have received and the results of the space
walk through, we agree that there are only thirty-eight full size rooms, not forty-
three as originally stated. We also acknowledge that Shuang Wen has a larger
Kindergarten class than in the upper grades and that needs to be taken into
account when looking at the space. In addition, based on the letter from March
14, 2009 from the Office of Students Enrollment, Shuang Wen is developing
dual language program.
Given the existing commitments around the dual language program and
admissions, as well as the current enrollment trend we will not be placing any
school or program into the building for the 2010-2011 school year. We will
continue to monitor the enrolment and the needs of the students in District 1
and may have to reassess in the future.
We will continue to engage with the community at PS 20, PS 188, Girls Prep
and PS 94 regarding the space and each school's needs. We have received
feedback from each school as well and will factor that into any proposal we put
forth regarding the space in those buildings going forward.
Thank you again for your feedback and your continued commitment to serve the
students of District 1:
