Description

Show #847   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 22nd July 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   VW ID.3 AVAILABLE TO ORDER FOR PRE-BOOKERS "Volkswagen has opened the order books for its ID.3, allowing those who placed a deposit to specify and confirm their car. The ID.3 1st Edition costs £38,880 (exc. PiCG) and features a 58 kWh (net) battery for a range of 260 miles on a charge. Ultra-rapid charging can be completed at up to 100 kW, allowing drivers to add around 180 miles of range in half an hour." says NExt Green Car: "Powered by a 150 kW electric motor, the ID.3 completes the 0-62mph sprint in 7.3 seconds, and matches a Golf GTI's 0-37mph time."   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8953/vw-id3-available-to-order-for-prebookers/   Whats the take from Top Gear? They say: "Cheaper models with less range, performance and kit will follow, but if you want to be among the first to get your mitts on VW’s purpose-built EV, you’ll need to part with £38,880. That’s sounds like a lot, but remember the UK Government will give you £3,000 off (because electricity), so you’ll actually only pay £35,880. Still a lot – that makes the ID.3 1st Edition around £5,000 more than a top-spec Mini Electric or Honda E, but just under £5,000 cheaper than an entry-level Tesla Model 3. The 1st Edition gets a 58kWh battery good for 260 miles of range. The Model 3 Standard Range Plus can do 254 miles, while the Honda and Mini can only do around 140 miles at most."   https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/volkswagen-id3-1st-edition-not-cheap   BMW SHUTS DOWN FACTORY FOR OVER A MONTH TO PREPARE FOR I4 ELECTRIC CAR PRODUCTION "BMW announced today that it is going to shut down its Munich factory for over a month in order to prepare for the production of its next electric car, the BMW i4.  It’s not uncommon for automakers to have scheduled production shutdowns in order to upgrade manufacturing lines, but this announcement from BMW today was surprising due to its length." says electrek: "The Munich factory is where BMW currently produces the 3 Series and it employs 7,800 people. Shutting down the plant for 6 weeks is going to have a major impact on the automaker’s inventory. The BMW i4 is built on BMW’s upcoming fifth-generation electric powertrain. The technology is supposed to enable BMW to produce all-electric, hybrid, and diesel/petrol cars all on the same production line. Plant director Robert Engelhorn commented on the remodel in Munich: “We are gearing up our Munich plant for the future. Once remodelling is finished, we will be able to produce vehicles with diesel, petrol and hybrid drive trains, as well as the fully-electric BMW i4, all on the same line. This will allow us to respond flexibly to customer demand.” BMW claims that the electric sedan is going to be able to achieve a range of 600 km (373 miles) on an 80kWh battery."   https://electrek.co/2020/07/22/bmw-shut-down-factory-i4-electric-car-production/   AUDI IS RESEARCHING BIDIRECTIONAL CHARGING TECHNOLOGY "Increasing network stability, lowering electricity costs, and contributing to climate protection – that is the vision that Audi and the Hager Group are pursuing. The incorporation of the electric car into the domestic grid is at the core of an innovative research project on bidirectional charging. This offers major advantages in combination with a photovoltaic system in particular. Excess PV electricity can be stored temporarily and output as needed." says VW: ". At night or during non-productive times of the rate, the car then uses inexpensive electricity to charge up to the desired target SOC (state of charge). Bid
