Description

Hosted by Dr. Jacinta Delhaize & Dr. Daniel Cunnama. In our first episode of the 2020s and Episode 20 we are honored to be joined by Prof. Ewine van Dishoeck who is a Dutch astronomer and chemist. She is Professor of Molecular Astrophysics at Leiden Observatory and the president of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).   We discuss Ewine’s work in molecular astrophysics. She takes us on a tour of the formation of a solar system. All the way from the Big Bang, through clouds of gas where solar systems and planets are being born, all the way to the very building blocks of life!   We learn how molecules form in space, combine with dust and eventually grow into the massive planets we observe and indeed inhabit. Ewine also tells us what it’s like to be the President of the largest organization of astronomers in the world and what she’s been up to during her visit to Cape Town!   We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs. The 365 Days of Astronomy Podcast is a project that is publishing one podcast per day, 5 to 10 minutes in duration, for all 365 days of the year. The podcast episodes are written, recorded and produced by people around the world. We are looking for individuals, schools, companies and clubs to provide 5 - 10 minutes of audio for the daily podcast. You can do as few as 1 episode or up to 12 episodes (one per month, subject to our editorial discretion). Our goal is to encourage people to sign up for a particular day (or days) of the year.
