mentali per larcheologia, in cui alois riegl (Stilfragen, Berlin 1893;
Riegl sottolinea invece
come accademici conservatori, a collegare lessenza e linizio dellarte
vogliono ritrovare i caratteri piú importanti dellarte cosiddetta «arcai-

l’antico patriziato come suoi pari, e infine pienamente
L’antica nobiltà cittadina e i
i mezzi finanziari103.

Warburg», Vorträge 1924-23, Leipzig-Berlin 1927; trad. it., La pro-
spettiva come «forma simbolica» e altri scritti, Milano 1961).

tante e cosí chiaramente indispensabile come Sancio
muoiono nello stesso anno.
entrambi ritengono anacronistica e in decadenza.
meno.
lari effetti drammatici: essi debbono esser principi, gene-
rali e gran signori, perché risultino teatralmente supe-
popolazione.

auge in ambienti piú elevati, come questi subivano l’in-
flusso dell’estetica classico-umanistica degli intellettua-
li.
lizzarlo in investimenti produttivi e spesso nemmeno
impiegarlo in acquisti di rilievo. Mobilio e oggetti deco-
gli altri, specie i notabili, ne compravano; in terzo luogo,
perché i quadri facevano bella figura in casa, dandole

tro ostenta sarcastica superiorità, misantropia e disprez-
difficoltà, insomma alle virtù pratiche della borghesia;

Vi appartengono quasi tutti i giovani d’ingegno; e,

e nell’Europa occidentale
tiquement» [«Solo i romantici san leggere le opere clas-
siche, perché le leggono come sono state scritte, roman-
ticamente»], dice Marcel Proust4.
romantico di un risorgimento non era certo cosa nuova;

to vicini siano ormai, a quest’epoca, gli scrittori inglesi
e quelli tedeschi.
e fuggono all’estero.
o Pu∫kin e Lermontov. E anche il risultato ideologico è
dovunque lo stesso: idealismo in Germania, «l’art pour
l’art» in Francia, estetismo in Inghilterra. Dappertutto
In Keats
roismo, l’amore, come tutto ciò ch’è immediato, natu-
rale, spontaneo.

1855.
vivere senza scopo e a morire senza gloria.
bra giungere alla meta e, spesso, proprio in quel momen-
to.
e prosaico; invece Wilhelm Meister finisce i suoi anni

to per innumerevoli fili.
mente affine all’ideale impressionistico e al relativismo
concepibile prima dell’impressionismo. L’impressioni-
finzioni. Quelle che noi chiamiamo verità, egli afferma77,
