An architecture graduate born in Imperia (western Liguria), she has been a view camera photographer since 1997. Her work
centres around the way in which buildings are depicted and she collaborates on the transformation of the architectural idiom
through specific interaction with other architects. “For me, telling the story of a work of architecture in photographs or film
means listening to the white noise of the bodies, present or future, that cross the buildings. Alluding to something that does not
yet exist, but which is already here.”

John Marx Architetto, è cofondatore e direttore artistico dello studio Form4 Architecture di San Francisco. Promuove l’arte,
la filosofia e il valore emozionale nella progettazione dei luoghi attraverso l’espressionismo lirico e la ricerca di un
equilibrio tra l’espressione di sé e la collaborazione con gli altri. Con Form4 ha vinto oltre 138 premi internazionali

An architect, and co-founder and chief artistic officer of the San Francisco-based Form4 Architecture. He

mysteries of perfume in a sensory museum.

Un hôtel particulier parigino di rue Faubourg Saint-Honoré è stato

trasformato dallo studio di architettura e scenografia Projectiles nel
Grande Museo del Profumo. Qui la fusione tra finalità ludiche e
pedagogiche offre un viaggio sensoriale avvalendosi di percorsi
interattivi e di installazioni visive e olfattive che ricostruiscono
attraverso settanta diverse essenze la storia del profumo dall’Antico
Egitto a oggi. La progettazione si è strutturata in due fasi distinte.
Inizialmente sono state individuate e analizzate le complesse
esperienze – legate alla scienza, alla memoria, all’arte e alla cultura –
che definiscono percezione e significato del profumo. Nella seconda
fase, spiega Reza Azard di Projectiles, «sono state concepite altre
esperienze che nascono nel gioco di confronto con la scala spaziale,
reinterpretando i codici estetici e architettonici dell’edificio». Allo scopo
di restituire l’essenza poliforma delle sensazioni olfattive e il loro
imprescindibile ruolo di “maschera sociale”, lo studio d’architettura ha
invitato a realizzare specifiche installazioni altri team creativi, come
Harvey & John, Jason Bruges e lo studio AC3. (Elena Franzoia)

A elegant hôtel particulier on the rue Faubourg Saint-Honoré was

transformed by the young Parisian agency Projectiles into the Grand
Musée du Parfum. The fusion between playful and educational
content offers a sensory journey into the mysteries of fragrances, using
interactive tours and innovative settings that, thanks to visual and
olfactory installations, reconstruct the history of perfume from ancient
Egypt to today through 70 different essences. The design process was
structured in two distinct phases. First of all the complex experiences
(tied to science, memory, art and culture) that define the perception and
meaning of perfume were individuated and analysed. In the second
phase, Reza Azard of Projectiles explains, “other experiences were
imagined and designed by playing on the confrontation with the spatial
scale, and by reinterpreting the aesthetic and architectural codes of the
building.” With the scope of reinstating the multifaceted essence to the

Museum in Weil am Rhein presents Night Fever.
Designing Club Culture 1960–Today, an exhibition
that looks at the discothèque from the 1960s
to the present day. Curated by Jochen Eisenbrand
with Catharine Rossi and Katarina Serulus, the show
highlights how the birth of the discothèque called into
question established codes of social life and merged
interior design, graphics and art with sound, light,
fashion and special effects. Examples range from
the Gruppo 9999’s Space Electronic in Florence,
to the legendary Studio 54 in New York, and the
concept by OMA for the Ministry of Sound in London.

in March. The UK designer is relocating his empire – a flagship
store, a showroom, offices, a restaurant and a café – from
Portobello Dock to Kings Cross, the recently revamped area
of London, where a brand new shopping district is scheduled
to open in the autumn. Dixon’s new home is in the recently-
restored Coal Office, an industrial facility dating back to 1851
that follows the curve of the Regent’s Canal. A 1.600-sqm
platform in which new interior design products and culinary
experiments will be presented to the public. “But also a place
in which to reflect on future living and the new functions

corridoio ecologico di collegamento con la laguna di Venezia e rifugio della
fauna selvatica, il Sile è tutelato da un Parco naturale regionale. Terminata
nel 2016 e articolata in tre stralci, la prima fase dei lavori ha restituito alla
collettività e proposto al turismo sostenibile una rinnovata piazza centrale
del paese e un percorso pedonale che ribadisce l’antico legame tra la
popolazione e il fiume. La seconda fase prevede ora il recupero della ex
cava Biasuzzi (sopra): innestato sul bordo del lago esito delle escavazioni,
il progetto è pensato come elemento attrattore di flussi turistici legati allo
slow food e allo slow travel. L’area diventerà un’importante tappa del
già esistente percorso GiraSile e un punto di contatto con il frequentato

The Treviso-based studio Made Associati has for years now been
working on restoring the historic areas and landscape that, in the
municipality of Quinto di Treviso, surround the Sile, the longest karst
spring river in Europe. A fundamental ecological corridor that connects
the area to the Venetian lagoon and a sanctuary for wild fauna, the
Sile is protected by a regional nature park. Completed in 2016 and
divided into three fragments, the first phase of work gave back to the
community a renovated central town square and an environmentally
respectful pedestrian pathway that connects the local population to the
river. The second phase now calls for the recovery of the former Biasuzzi
quarry (above): designed to be an element that attracts tourists
interested in slow food and slow travel, the area will become a stop
on the established GiraSile route and a point of contact with the popular
cycling and walking path along the former Treviso-Ostiglia railway

il nuovo concept store Prada nel Design District di Miami: 650 mq
che la firma italiana dell’alta moda ha scelto di sintonizzare con
l’estetica latino-americana della Miami Beach del tempo che fu.
Le pareti sono scandite da bassorilievi con il motivo a foglie
delle stampe Prada nel verde tipico della maison. L’allestimento
accosta il modernismo classico con le forme sensuali e materiche
del design brasiliano. Gli interni infatti sono popolati da arredi anni
Cinquanta e Sessanta creati dai più importanti designer e architetti
del Brasile. Tutti insieme gli arredi creano un unicum domestico,
intimo e confortevole, caratterizzato da una fortissima sensibilità
per i materiali e per la fattura artigianale. Il pavimento di marmo
a scacchi bianchi e neri rievoca lo storico negozio milanese
in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, mentre le travi sul soffitto strizzano

A new Prada concept store was inaugurated in the heart of Miami’s

Design District during Art Basel Miami Beach 2017. The Italian high
fashion firm chose to shape its 650 sqm in harmony with the Latin
American aesthetic of the Miami Beach that once was. The walls
are covered in base reliefs with the classic Prada leaf print in
a shade of green typical of the fashion house. The new décor unites
the classic modernism with the textural sensual shapes of Brazilian
design. The interiors, in fact, are populated with pieces of furniture
from the 1950s and 1960s created by the most important Brazilian
designers and architects. Taken together the pieces create
a domestic, intimate and comfortable whole with strong sensibility
for materials and for craftsmanship. The chequered black and
white marble floor is a reference to the iconography of the historic
Milanese store in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, while the beams
on the ceiling are a nod to the new international stores

Bauhaus came into being. In the 14 years
of its existence – from 1919 to 1933 – this
important German school, based first in
Weimar, then in Dessau and later in Berlin
invented methods that influenced whole
generations of artists and designers, and
introduced a whole new aesthetic for the
age. The anniversary coincides with the
opening of the new Bauhaus Museum
in Dessau by the Catalan studio Addenda
Architects that will house the 40,000 items
the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation holds, but
which it has never had the space to exhibit.
Another new related site is the Museum
of Weimar, by Heike Hanada and Benedict,
the new home of the collections of the
Klassik Stiftung Weimar (formerly the
Grand Ducal Museum of Weimar, top graphic
art collection). The last new “container”
(due to open in 2021) is the five-storey
glazed tower by Staab Architekten. It will

Seguendo uno scenario già visto in molte altre città europee, anche
a Lisbona negozi, caffè, gallerie d’arte, spazi per il co-working e loft
spuntano come funghi. Paulo Moreira, architetto di Porto, ha seguito
la riqualificazione di un magazzino dismesso per ospitare il birrificio
Musa, dove si produce birra ed è possibile consumarla. Le funzioni
sono tre: un piccolo stabilimento industriale, alcune funzioni tecniche
e amministrative e una sala pubblica. Mantenendo aperte alcune
visuali è sempre possibile percepire l’intera lunghezza dell’edificio
e, mentre si sorseggia una birra, vedere da dove provenga. Come già
in precedenti progetti residenziali, Moreira ricicla i resti di una cultura
industriale scomparsa e opera per strati: al passato, che si legge nei
muri lasciati a vista o nelle travature del tetto, aggiunge una nuova

Following a playbook already seen in many other European cities, in
Lisbon shops, cafés, art galleries, co-working spaces and obviously lofts
are popping up like mushrooms. Paulo Moreira, an architect from Porto,
oversaw the conversion into a brewery of a disused warehouse for the
brewing company Musa, a space where beer is produced and can also
be consumed. Its purpose is threefold: to house a small industrial
facility, a few technical and administrative functions, and a public space.
Because certain areas were left open, the entire length of the building
is always visible and while you sip your beer you can see exactly where
it comes from. As he had already done in previous residential projects,
Moreira recycles the remains of a lost industrial culture and works
in layers: to the past, seen in the exposed walls and roof beams,
he adds on a new atmosphere, tied to the memory of the place

a spazi pubblici come ad ambienti domestici.
Le superfici grafiche leggermente a rilievo mettono
in risalto la tattilità e la morbidezza della materia
ceramica, evocando dinamiche tipiche del tessuto
grazie ad accorte sfumature di colore. Due i pattern

Lea Ceramiche’s PAD collection – by French designer
Patrick Norguet, who has worked for the firm since
2010 – features a series of irregular, imprecise marks
applied to ultra-thin sheets of laminate stoneware
measuring three metres by one, and is suitable
for both public spaces and home environments. The
subtle relief effect on the surface highlights the soft,
textural quality of the ceramic material, producing
a fabric-like quality that is given added depth by
the clever use of delicate shades. The two decorative
abstract patterns are called Tamis and Oakland.

giorno pensata come piattaforma sociale in questa abitazione in cui
tutti gli ambienti sono in osmosi fluida e diretta con il vasto giardino
dalle differenziate qualità spaziali, che dà accesso alla piscina e
al lungomare. La Bellport House vive di visuali e di luce. La luce si
rivela fondamentale per la valorizzazione dell’arte contemporanea,

A well-to-do New York family charged the Japanese architect Toshihiro
Oki, who trained at the Sanaa studio in Tokyo, with making a weekend
home for them on Long Island in which the areas dedicated to
socialising, enlivened by the frequent presence of guests, would be the
star. The project therefore emphasises the common areas, conceived
as a social platform, in a residence that features the possibility for all
the spaces to have direct and fluid exchange with the vast garden, and
its various distinct settings, which leads to the pool and the waterfront.
The Bellport House draws life from views and light. Light that reveals
itself to be fundamental to the appreciation of the contemporary
art on display, which the owner works with professionally

NBI. Yet another important component of the City
for knowledge and culture taking shape on the
north-western outskirts of Bologna that Marino
Golinelli, the pharmaceutical and philanthropic
entrepreneur, decided to leave as a legacy to
future generations. Rising up next to the Opificio,
the educational and cultural centre that was
inaugurated in 2015, the new 700-square-metre
building has flexible and adaptable interiors and

accompagnati da una pessima reputazione. A giudicare
dalle numerose immagini che costituiscono la maggior
parte del corposo volume The Living Surface,
letteralmente “la superficie vivente”, l’idea non parrebbe
del tutto campata in aria: già rivalutati in ambito scientifico
(i licheni, per esempio, sono ottimi bioindicatori della
qualità dell’aria), funghi, muschi e compagnia rivelano
nella raccolta di Freijsen un inaspettato fascino anche
dal punto di vista estetico. Non si tratta però, precisa
l’autrice, di foto artistiche: le figure raccolte esaltano
piuttosto la dimensione del tempo, il lento processo
di decadimento che porta nei materiali cambiamenti
inizialmente impercettibili, poi inevitabili e inarrestabili,
per giungere infine allo spettatore come un gioco di
macchie e colori. Un vero e proprio catalogo di disegni
naturali del tutto inaspettati, impaginato con originalità
e arricchito dai contributi del designer Ed van Hinte

Doing something meaningful with the undesirable.
The studio of artist and designer Lizan Freijsen starts
from this rather odd premise as they set out to elevate
mould, lichens and other natural elements that usually
have very negative associations to the status of
decorative design features. And if the many images that
appear in the hefty tome The Living Surface are anything
to go by, the idea might not be such a crazy one after all.
Now that fungi, mosses and the like have been
reassessed by the science community (lichens,
for example, are excellent bio-indicators of air quality),
they take on an unexpectedly attractive aesthetic quality
in Freijsen’s book. But, as the author points out, these
are not art photos: the pictures focus attention instead
on the temporal dimension, the slow process of decay
that provokes what are initially imperceptible changes
in materials that then inevitably become unstoppable
and eventually appear to the viewer as a set of coloured
stains. A catalogue of natural and quite surprising
patterns, presented in book form in an original way
and enriched with contributions from designer

Never Use Futura è l’avvertimento che l’autore
del libro, Douglas Thomas, si sentì fare quando era
ancora studente. Avvertimento che ha acceso la sua
curiosità fino a spingerlo a fare un’approfondita
ricerca su uno dei caratteri tipografici più utilizzati
nella storia contemporanea. Dalla sua comparsa
nel 1924, quando Paul Renner sulla scia del Bauhaus
elaborò un nuovo carattere senza grazie, fino ai giorni
nostri, Thomas ricompone con occhio da semiologo
la storia sfaccettata di questo font. Prendendo
in esame prodotti di consumo di massa, brand
di lusso, campagne elettorali e presidenti, viaggi
nello spazio e sbarchi sulla luna analizza infatti come
in ogni occasione Futura abbia contribuito in modo
fondamentale alla costruzione del messaggio e del

Never Use Futura non è solo un libro per i nerd dei
font, è soprattutto un viaggio affascinante nella storia

Never Use Futura is the warning that was given
to the author of the book, Douglas Thomas, when
he was still at university. But the warning only
served to arouse his curiosity, and indeed prompted
him to carry out an in-depth study of one of the
most widely-used typefaces of the modern era.
Tracing its history from its very beginnings in 1924,
when Paul Renner used Bauhaus principles to create
a new sans-serif typeface, up to the present day,
Thomas reconstructs the multifarious history of this
font with a semiologist’s eye. Through an examination
of mass consumer products, luxury brands,
electoral campaigns and presidents, space travel
and lunar landings, he concludes that on each
occasion Futura was fundamental to the construction
of the message and its meaning. In 1932, for
example, having been chosen as the typeface of the
Communist Party, Futura was the visual translation
of all that was furthest from Hitler and his politics.
And in Wes Anderson’s film The Royal Tenenbaums,
it is used for the credits and the covers of the books
that appear in various scenes as a way of conveying
a sense of a precise historical period: the 1960s.

Si sa che Milano è apprezzata dagli architetti per
i suoi androni, i cortili segreti, l’uso della pietra, la sua
densità così decisamente urbana e funzionale, così
moderna. Lo è soprattutto per le opere a cielo aperto
ideate da Giuseppe Terragni, Gio Ponti, Piero
Portaluppi, Luigi Caccia Dominioni, Ignazio Gardella,
Marco Zanuso, Ludovico Magistretti e molti altri
progettisti che hanno fatto la storia del Novecento.
Questo volume rappresenta una guida alla scoperta
degli anni d’oro dell’architettura meneghina,
attraverso le residenze più significative realizzate
dal primo dopoguerra all’inizio degli anni Settanta.
Dalla famosa Ca’ Brütta di Giovanni Muzio alla Casa
Corbellini Wassermann di Portaluppi, dalla Torre
Velasca di BBPR al complesso residenziale di via
Argelati firmato Franco Albini e Franca Helg, fino
alla palazzina di Vico Magistretti su piazza San Marco:
nelle oltre 500 pagine si susseguono le fotografie in
bianco e nero (scattate ad hoc da Stefano Topuntoli),
le planimetrie e i prospetti degli 80 edifici scelti

In 2009 a competition assigned the Parisian
architect Philippe Prost the task of restoring
and reorganizing the Hôtel des Monnaies, home
of the Paris Mint, with the aim of opening it to the
public and putting centuries-old craftsmanship
skills on display. The mint is the oldest institution
in France, founded in the 9th century and currently
split between an imposing neoclassical building
on the banks of the Seine, where precious metals
are worked, and the city of Pessac in the Gironde
department, where euros are coined. Facing onto

infatti appartamenti e uffici dietro l’imponente
facciata lungo la Senna, mentre alle officine
della zecca destinò la parte retrostante, organizzata
in corti. Nel 1793 l’Hôtel des Monnaies inglobò
anche il Petit Hôtel de Conti di Jules Hardouin-
Mansart, raggiungendo l’attuale superficie di oltre
un ettaro nel centralissimo VI Arrondissement.

bringing the complex to its current size of over
a hectare in the central 6th Arrondissement.

In order to open up this magnificent structure
to the community, retaining a close link between
production and exhibition, this contemporary project
has added new functions without ever putting
a stop to the mint’s activity. The project is due for
completion in 2019 with the rehabilitation of the
Petit Hôtel and the creation of a Gallery of Metals,
garden and a concept store. As Prost says, “This is

not just from an urban, architectural and landscape

Seine the studios, housed in the median strip
and laid out around the three large courtyards,
there are commercial spaces, a permanent
exhibition and the area devoted to crafts, while,
in the large zone at the rear, the offices are

the natural world with skill and sensitivity. One way to
do this is to preserve trees, as Herzog & de Meuron did
in their Plywood House, 1985, whose main façade bends
to go around a tree in front of it while the foundations
were raised to avoid damaging the roots underneath.
Or trees can be built around as if they were generators
of the design (as with Lina Bo Bardi’s Coatí Restaurant
in Salvador, Brazil, 1987-90 which is constructed
around a large mango tree that extends right through
the building). Or trees can even become part of the
construction itself (as in BBPR’s Canadian pavilion
in the Giardini of the Venice Biennale, 1958, or DVVT
Architekten’s Bernheimbeuk House in Belgium,
2009-11). But buildings can also be almost trans-fixed
by nature, as with Sverre Fehn at the Venice Biennale
(Nordic Pavilion, 1958-62), a work which established
a kind of paradigm, with clear linked to other works
such as Hanegi Forest by Shigeru Ban (Tokyo, 1997),
a project made up of bends, swerves and gaps designed
to ensure the survival of the twenty-seven trees
present on the site, of this example by Lacaton & Vassal

2007), composizione trafitta dagli alberi che
diventano, oltre la copertura percorribile, presenze
ludiche per i bambini. L’architettura moderna
ci ha regalato molte accortezze, gesti anche minimi
e piccole inflessioni che hanno saputo intessere
natura e artificio senza cedere a finti vernacoli
o rinunciare al proprio linguaggio, ma esprimendo
una sensibilità sottile e decisa.
Non c’è dubbio che tale sensibilità sia la stessa
con cui Lu Feng, fondatore nel 2008 dello studio
WuYang Architecture di Shanghai, ha affrontato
il progetto della cosiddetta “Longhouse among
the pine-trees”, un padiglione all’interno dello
ZYJ Treehouse Land, boutique resort immerso
nel Parco Nazionale del Monte Qiyun nella
provincia di Anhui in Cina. Pianificato nel 2013,
il resort è stato aperto nel 2016 ed è una collezione
di padiglioni indipendenti distribuiti nel verde.
La Longhouse, per ridurre al minimo l’impatto
sul terreno, è sollevata da terra su coppie di pilastri

standing in a wood and penetrated by it, and finally
certain work by Tezuka Architects (Fuji Kindergarten,
Tokyo, 2007), where the architecture is pierced by
trees that have become, in addition to an accessible
roof, playful places for children. Modern architecture
has come up with many clever devices of this kind,
sometimes through minimal gestures and small
features that interweave nature and artifice without
lapsing into fake vernacular or the idea of a specific
form of language, but giving expression to subtle
and yet clear-cut forms of sensitivity.
There is no doubt that it is with the same sense
of sensitivity that Lu Feng, founder of the WuYang
Architecture practice in Shanghai in 2008, has tackled
the design of the Longhouse among the Pine-trees,
a lodge at ZYJ Treehouse Land, a boutique resort
located in the national park of Mount Qiyun in Anhui
Province, China. Planned in 2013, the resort was opened
in 2016 and consists of a collection of independent
lodges scattered amidst vegetation. To keep its impact
on the ground to a minimum, the Longhouse is raised
on pairs of steel pillars, while a light metal framework

La geometria astratta e il colore della struttura
apparentemente richiamano icone a noi vicine
(come le “decostruttive” folies del Parc de la Villette
parigino), ma sarebbe sbagliato attribuire loro una
reale influenza, come riduttivo limitare al moderno
i riferimenti di questo progetto. Il quale guarda
anche a una tradizione più dilatata e contestuale:
ai paesaggi della pittura cinese classica (come
il celebre dipinto Jiang Fan Lou Ge di Li Sixun);
ai templi buddisti giapponesi, con la loro architettura
altrettanto rossa e immersa nel verde (come quello
di Kiyomizu-Dera a Kyoto); e infine, nel nome stesso,
a quella cultura tradizionale cinese per cui “sostare

the transition between outside and inside with
a corridor suspended among the pine trees). At the end
of the porch stands the guest room proper, a small
space of 50 square metres clad in red cedar wood
that is penetrated by trees thanks to four holes
that pass through it and expanses of glass that blur
the boundaries between natural and built environment.
The abstract geometry and colour of the structure may
seem to be allusions to icons close to home (such
as the “deconstructive” folies of the Parc de la Villette
in Paris), but it would be a mistake to attribute
a real influence in this way, and reductive to limit
the references of this project to modern works.
This project also harks back to a broader and more
contextual tradition, namely the landscapes of classical
Chinese painting (such as Li Sixun’s celebrated scroll
Jiang Fan Lou Ge) but also the Buddhist temples
of Japan, with their equally red architecture immersed
in greenery (come Kiyomizu-Dera in Kyoto); and finally,
in its very name, to traditional Chinese culture,
in which “being among the pines” is a cherished poetic
phrase. There is no doubt that this small “translucent”
and porous building is indeed poetic

to the regulations for the protection of the forest.

Ha la classica silhouette da “casetta nel bosco”
questo cottage nero da 136 metri quadrati in tutto,
con rimessa per gli attrezzi che ne è una riproduzione
in miniatura. Nella sua rigorosa essenzialità dialoga
con il paesaggio circostante, prima fonte d’ispirazione
per il giovane team di Appareil, studio multidisciplinare
con base a Montréal particolarmente radicato nella
cultura nordica per materiali-metodi di costruzione
utilizzati e per linguaggio. Prima ancora di immaginare
la struttura dell’edificio gli architetti Robert Lavoie
e Kim Pariseau hanno studiato a fondo le caratteristiche
This black chalet with a total floor area of 136 sqm,
along with a tool shed that is a reproduction of it
in miniature, has the classic silhouette of a “cottage
in the woods”. In its rigorous and essential form it
enters into dialogue with the surrounding landscape,

di cedro sviluppato tra i due volumi. L’edificio
principale è organizzato attorno a un nucleo
tecnico centrale che si ritrova a entrambi i livelli,
integra parzialmente la cucina riservandole
un ampio magazzino walk-in e aiuta a separare
le diverse funzioni senza interrompere la continuità
dello spazio. La zona giorno al piano terreno
è costituita da un unico ambiente a tutta altezza
con arredi su misura, su cui affaccia la zona notte
superiore. Il rivestimento monocromatico
delle facciate di lamiera ondulata è richiamato
dentro casa da alcuni elementi neri, come
le lampade a sospensione in contrasto con
la prevalenza di colori chiari – il bianco dei soffitti
e del volume-soppalco che contiene la zona notte,
i pannelli multistrato delle pareti di pioppo e betulla
del baltico, il grigio della pavimentazione
di cemento lucidato – resi ancora più luminosi
dalla luce naturale proveniente dalle ampie vetrate.
Lo chalet, ottimamente isolato, ha riscaldamento
a pavimento al piano terreno, stufa a legna
in soggiorno e termoconvettori al primo piano.
Anche lo studiato orientamento fa la sua parte
nel creare il giusto clima.
Il living è riscaldato anche da una tradizionale stufa a legna.

and Kim Pariseau made a thorough study of the
characteristics of the site and the woodland setting
in order to optimize every line and every volume
in relation to the qualities of the ecosystem and
create a symbiosis between architecture and nature.
This respect for the environment is also confirmed
by the decision to locate a parking area well
away from the house, with which it is connected
by a path running through the trees that then turns
into cedar wood decking linking the two structures.
The main building is organized around a central
technical core that is located on both levels, partially
integrates the kitchen and its spacious larder
and helps to separate different functions without
interrupting the continuity of the spaces. The day
zone on the ground floor consists of a single
full-height space with custom-built furniture onto
which the night zone on the upper floor faces.
The monochromatic corrugated-steel cladding
is echoed on the inside of the house by several
black elements, such as the hanging lamps,
in contrast with the prevalence of light colours
– the white of the ceilings and the loft that contains
the night zone, the plywood panels of the walls
made from Baltic poplar and birch, the grey
of the polished cement floor – made even brighter
by the natural light entering though the large
expanses of glass. The well-insulated chalet has
underfloor heating on the ground floor, a wood
stove in the living room and convectors on the first
floor. The building’s carefully studied orientation
also plays a part in creating the right climate

Nel paesaggio collinare dell’Alto Lazio, ai confini
con l’Umbria, lo studio romano Alvisi Kirimoto
ha appena terminato il recupero di un complesso
rurale come residenza della coppia di artisti
francesi Sylvie Guillem (indimenticabile étoile
della danza) e Gilles Tapie, fotografo di moda,
pubblicità e performing arts. L’impegno
nei confronti del rispetto ambientale accomuna
architetti e committenti, tanto che Guillem dedicò
nel 2012 il prestigioso Leone dÕoro alla carriera
della Biennale Danza di Venezia a Paul Watson,
attivista per la salvaguardia del mare con la sua
associazione Sea Shepherd Conservation.
Elemento basilare dell’approccio progettuale
di Massimo Alvisi e Junko Kirimoto è stata quindi
la sostenibilità, tradotta non solo nell’adozione
di tecnologie mirate all’autosufficienza energetica,
come quelle fotovoltaiche, ma anche nell’uso
di materiali naturali della tradizione locale
e nella elegante ed equilibrata rilettura, priva
di sensazionalismi, dei due casolari esistenti,
in imprescindibile relazione con il contesto
paesaggistico. Risalenti alla prima metà del
Novecento, i due edifici sono situati all’interno

In the hilly landscape of Northern Lazio, on the
border with Umbria, the Roman practice Alvisi
Kirimoto has just finished restoring a complex of rural
buildings to serve as the residence for a couple
of French artists, the ballet star Sylvie Guillem
and the fashion, advertising and performing arts
photographer, Gilles Tapie. The architects and
the clients share a commitment to the environment,
so much so that in 2012 Guillem dedicated the
prestigious Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement
at the Venice Dance Biennale to Paul Watson,
the marine conservation activist who founded
the Sea Shepherd association. So, the basic element
of Massimo Alvisi and Junko Kirimoto’s approach
to the project has been sustainability, expressed
not just through the adoption of technologies
of self-sufficiency in energy, such as photovoltaics,
and to natural materials traditionally used in the area,
but also in an elegant and balanced reinterpretation
of two existing farmhouses, where the work is free
of sensationalism and has created a clear relationship
to the surrounding landscape. Dating from the first
half of the 20th century, the two buildings are located
on about 27,000 square metres of land still covered

di metri e sono separati da un ripido dislivello. Oggi
accolgono uno l’abitazione, il più grande, e l’altro
i laboratori artistici dei proprietari e l’alloggio
del custode. Al rispetto delle volumetrie originarie
Alvisi e Kirimoto hanno affiancato interessanti
soluzioni autoriali. La distribuzione vede al piano
terreno la zona giorno, la camera padronale e i locali
di servizio; al piano superiore le stanze degli ospiti
e il grande soggiorno. Cuore pulsante dell’abitazione
appare l’ingresso a doppia altezza, inondato
dalla luce naturale e contraddistinto da straordinarie
viste sul paesaggio e da un’elegante scala di ferro
e legno su disegno, che recupera, come le porte
delle camere, alcune vecchie travi dei tetti. Entrambi
i casali sono caratterizzati dal mantenimento a vista

with olive trees, about a hundred metres from one
another and separated by a steep drop. Today the
larger one serves as the residence, while the other
holds the artistic workshops of the owners and
the caretaker’s lodge. Alvisi and Kirimoto have made
some interesting alterations to the original layout
of the buildings. On the ground floor of the residence
there is the day zone, the master bedroom and
service spaces, while the guest rooms and the large
living room are on the upper floor. At the house’s
heart lies a double-height entrance, flooded with
natural light and distinguished by extraordinary views
of the landscape and an elegant staircase made
to design out of iron and wood: as are the bedroom
doors, which reutilizes some of the old roof beams.
Both buildings are marked by the retention
and exposure of the wooden and brick structure
of the roofs and the use of terracotta tiles for the

d’epoca e pezzi anni Cinquanta di Terence Conran
e Isamu Noguchi. Soprattutto nel vasto
soggiorno, cui le aperture variamente orientate
donano la magia quotidiana del mutare della luce.

of the complex and increase the visual connection

paid to the furnishings. Taking a cosmopolitan
and contemporary approach, elements made to
the architects’ own design are flanked at Villa Guillem
by antique and modern furniture in the Italian
and French style, with spectacular period chandeliers
and pieces designed in the 1950s by Terence Conran
and Isamu Noguchi. This is especially true in the huge
living room, to which the windows facing in various
directions lend a daily magic of shifting light

suggerisce il suo nome, Hide Out House (casa
nascosta) è stata da poco ristrutturata da DBA –
Dan Brunn Architecture. Disegnata in origine da
Frank Gehry per una nota coppia di collezionisti
d’arte moderna, è la prima abitazione unifamiliare
progettata dal maestro. Decenni dopo, i nuovi
proprietari – un famoso visual artist e famiglia –
hanno deciso che era giunto il momento di premere
il tasto “riavvio” del progetto originale anni Settanta
firmato Gehry. Il loro obiettivo? Una casa per
accogliere – ma anche arginare – il tipico stile
di vita da South California del ventunesimo secolo,
frenetico e sottoposto al bombardamento digitale.

of residential tropes become stand-out design

bespoke project. For example, a standard partition
wall (at the far end of the main space) is rethought
as a pivoting element that creates a myriad

wall swings effortlessly to and fro, allowing
artistic flow to continue into an even more hidden
multi-purpose room that can double as a guest
bedroom (complete with fold-up Murphy bed),

Oggi il real estate è ancora in grande espansione
nella capitale libanese, con tanti nuovi complessi
in cantiere. Ne è passato di tempo da quando Gabriele
Basilico fotografò in bianco e nero i palazzi storici
ridotti a scheletri ammutoliti, al termine di una terribile
guerra civile. Erano gli anni Novanta. Subito dopo
il premier-businessman Rafik Hariri (assassinato
con un’autobomba nel 2005) lanciò un gigantesco
e controverso piano pubblico-privato per la
ricostruzione. I 200 ettari interessati dall’operazione
Solidere (Société Libanaise pour le Développement
et la Reconstruction du Centre-ville de Beyrouth),
tutt’ora in corso, vennero liberati dagli abitanti,
suddivisi in lotti e fatti disegnare al gotha
dell’architettura internazionale per ricreare “la più
elegante città del Medio Oriente”. Sono nati
così landmark come il Beirut Souk firmato da Rafael
Moneo – uno sterminato e piuttosto raggelante
shopping mall sotto grandi arcate tipiche del maestro
spagnolo – e il centro commerciale di Zaha Hadid

The real-estate market in Beirut continues to expand
with great speed, with many new complexes under
construction. Much time has passed since Gabriele
Basilico took his black-and-white photographs
of the city’s old blocks of flats reduced to mute
skeletons, at the end of a terrible civil war. That was
in the 1990s. Immediately afterwards the premier
and businessman Rafik Hariri (assassinated by a car
bomb in 2005) launched a gigantic and controversial
plan for public-private partnership for reconstruction.
The 200 hectares affected by the operation called
SOLIDERE (Société Libanaise pour le Développement
et la Reconstruction du Centre-ville de Beyrouth),
still under way, were cleared of their inhabitants,
divided into lots and parcelled out an international
architecture élite in order to re-create “the most
elegant city in the Middle East”. Out of this came
landmarks like the Beirut Souk designed by Rafael
Moneo – a vast and somewhat chilling shopping mall
under the Spanish architect’s typical great arches –
and Zaha Hadid’s department store that evokes
the weave of a basket, as well as towers and blocks of
flats by Arata Isozaki, Ricardo Bofill, Richard Rogers,
Peter Marino, Steven Holl and Herzog & de Meuron,
to mention just a few. Foster + Partners’ has just
completed the 3Beirut project which is set in this

una spettacolare vista sul porto attraverso il fronte
a nord interamente vetrato, mentre il lato sud
digrada con ampie terrazze e tetti verdi cercando
un dialogo con il tessuto storico della città. «Fino
a qualche anno fa i valori immobiliari qui erano
più alti», spiega il project architect di Foster +
Partners Martin Kehoe. «La guerra in Siria ha avuto
pesanti ricadute per le violenze che ha innescato.
Si è interrotto soprattutto il flusso di investitori
provenienti dai Paesi del Golfo».
Ora si parte da 6mila dollari al metro quadrato
per i 149 appartamenti di questo complesso, con
tagli che vanno da un minimo di 180 metri quadrati
(più balconi e terrazze) agli oltre 700 delle tre
penthouse su due piani in cima ai tre grattacieli.
Foster + Partners – che ha in corso a Beirut anche
la ristrutturazione dell’edificio modernista Starco
90 and 75 metres), clad in limestone imported
from Turkey, offer a spectacular view of the harbour
through the entirely glazed north front, while the
southern side slopes downwards with broad terraces
and green roofs in conversation with the historic
fabric of the city. As F+P’s project architect Martin
Kehoe explains “Up until a few years ago real-estate
values here were higher, but the war in Syria
has had serious repercussions owing to the violence
it has triggered, and above all the flow of investors
from the Gulf countries has been cut off.” Today the
price starts from 6000 dollars a square metre for the
149 apartments in this complex, with sizes ranging
from a minimum of 180 square metres (plus balconies
and terraces) to over 700 for the three duplex
penthouses on top of the three highrises. In its design
of the three towers Foster + Partners – who in Beirut
are also involved in the renovation of the Starco

in particolare per la loro vivibilità spaziosa
gli ambienti affacciati sulle terrazze, dove gli architetti
hanno saputo sfruttare le amenità del clima
e insieme reinterpretare un tema tipico libanese,
quello della “loggia”.

These spaces are particularly striking in terms of
their space and liveability especially with the rooms
facing onto the terraces, where the architects have
been able to exploit the climate and reinterpret
a typically Lebanese theme, that of the “balcony”

El Equipo de Mazzanti, il raggruppamento
eterogeneo che a Bogotá si muove intorno
all’architetto Giancarlo Mazzanti, ha concluso
recentemente un progetto esemplare, dato
che eccede in maniera significativa la scala,
già notevole, degli interventi pubblici di questo
autore. Mazzanti, infatti, è noto da anni per aver
firmato alcune delle opere più significative
della rinascita culturale e sociale della Colombia
attuale, spesso in collaborazione con altri
professionisti più giovani, agendo quindi come
il motore alla base dell’affermazione internazionale
di un’intera generazione di progettisti. Lo stadio
coperto per i Giochi Panamericani, insieme

El Equipo de Mazzanti, the heterogeneous grouping
that is gathered around Giancarlo Mazzanti
in Bogotá, has recently concluded an exemplary
project, something they goes beyond the already
notable range of public interventions by this
architect. Mazzanti, in fact, is well known for
having designed some of the most representative
work linked to the cultural and social renaissance
currently taking place in today’s Colombia, often
in collaboration with other, younger professionals,
and has been a driving force behind the growing
international reputation for an entire generation
of architects. The roofed stadium for the Pan-
American Games, designed together with Plan:B,

The sequence of the modular classrooms designed
by Mazzanti adapts to the lie of the ground on the available
sites, always creating a large paved courtyard onto which
face all the entrances, protected by light canopies.

componente ludica, accompagnata da un pragmatismo
esemplare, è alla base dell’iniziativa per la costruzione
di 21 asili nella regione Atlántico, zona del Nord
del Paese che si affaccia sul Mar dai Caraibi. Gli asili,
che si chiamano in realtà Centros de Desarrollo
Infantil si inseriscono all’interno di un processo
di sperimentazione di nuovi paradigmi pedagogici
per la prima infanzia, soprattutto per i quartieri più poveri.
Accoglieranno oltre seimila bambini, in otto municipi

Shakira, the aforementioned Pies Descalzos,
and above all strategies connected to participation
with the local people, in order to respond with
greater effectiveness to their needs. The model
explored through these practices is attentive
to the problems of communicating architecture
to non-specialists and to the fact that designers
are able to learn from the public during the phase
of conception, when the exchange of information
can take place through forms of play like those
presented in the monographic exhibition We Play
You Play staged at the Spazio FMG in Milan
in the summer of 2017 or in the installation Speaking
Architecture at the Chicago Architecture Biennial
in 2015. A similarly playful aspect, accompanied
by clear form of pragmatism, underpins an initiative
around the construction of 21 nursery schools
in the Atlántico region, an area in the north
of the country that faces onto the Caribbean Sea.
These nursery schools, which are in fact called
Centros de Desarrollo Infantil, are part of a process
of experimentation with new teaching practices for
early childhood, especially in poorer neighbourhoods.

dei centri. Ognuno di questi è infatti composto
da una sequenza di blocchi, come quelli di legno
con cui i bambini giocano a costruire, contigui uno
all’altro e che si dipanano sul terreno quasi come
fossero delle collane, di solito racchiudendo un grande
cortile interno. L’equilibrio tra elementi sempre
uguali e le variazioni planimetriche di ogni asilo,
che risponde alle condizioni orografiche, alla forma
e all’orientamento dei lotti disponibili, alle situazioni
specifiche dei quartieri circostanti, è la risposta
concreta e astuta alla necessità di produrre architettura
in quantità enormi. Una manciata di edifici di pregio
non sono sufficienti per ovviare alle arretratezze
accumulate da decenni, è necessario passare
a una mole di interventi infinitamente più grande,
lavorando attraverso economie di scala e non
solamente perseguendo l’eccellenza dei singoli progetti.
Per raggiungere questo obiettivo, la tecnica costruttiva
dei singoli blocchi è stata studiata e affinata attraverso
innumerevoli prototipi: si tratta di scatole composte
di pannelli prefabbricati d’acciaio, trasportati in sito

of forms and volumes (as is the case with toys) marks
out the appearance of these centres. Each of them
is in fact made up of a sequence of blocks, just like
the wooden ones with which children play at building,

interventions are required, exploiting economies

and refined through a series of able prototypes.
The boxes are made of prefabricated steel panels,
which are then transported to the site where they

torrenziali. A seconda degli arredi interni e delle
diverse aggregazioni possibili, i blocchi possono
ospitare sale nido, aule, locali per l’amministrazione,
palestre, cucine e refettori. Ogni centro offre nido
per la prima infanzia, otto sale di asilo e otto sale
di scuola materna. In sezione, le scatole sono
la dimostrazione dell’astuzia di Mazzanti: l’inclinazione
del tetto permette di evacuare con facilità le acque
piovane ma soprattutto, quando specchiata nella parte

are coated with concrete. A waterproofing sheath
of silicone and pieces of glazed ceramic are then
added in order to facilitate maintenance and cleaning.
In plan and in section, the form of each module
is that of two identical trapeziums, which touch
on the main base. This geometry allows the elements
to be coupled and joined together with ease,
and for accessory components to be added where
needed: bathrooms, contained in simpler cubes,
or large canopies under which the children can walk
protected from blazing sun or torrential rain.
Depending on internal fittings and different possible
aggregations, the blocks can house crèches,
classrooms, administrative offices, gyms, kitchens
and canteens. Each centre has a crèche for
the youngest children, eight nursery school rooms
and eight rooms for slightly older children. In section,
the boxes are a demonstration of Mazzanti’s careful
use of space and form: the slope of the roof
allows rainwater to run off easily, but above all,

Come in altri progetti di Mazzanti, il cortile e alcuni
dei volumi sono disponibili per la vita del quartiere,
in modo di poter accogliere attività diverse al di fuori
degli orari scolastici.
I 21 asili appena terminati dimostrano l’efficacia
e la generosità dell’idea, in grado di realizzare
molti centri a costi ridotti senza cadere nella ripetitività:
a questo punto, il progetto meriterebbe di essere
replicato fino all’esaurimento dei bisogni ai quali
ha appena iniziato a rispondere.

In this way the outer perimeter of the “necklace”
of each kindergarten functions as a barrier against
the floods that often affect the region. The empty
and circulation spaces located within the perimeter
of the construction are fundamental to the creation
of a total educational setting, where learning
takes place not just in the dedicated classrooms
but through play outside. As in Mazzanti’s other
projects, the courtyard and some of the volumes are
available for use by local residents, so that they are
able to host different activities outside of school hours.
The 21 nursery schools just completed demonstrate
the efficacy and generosity of this overall idea,
which is capable of realizing many centres at a
reduced cost without repeating itself. At this point,
this design deserves to be replicated until all the
needs to which it has begun to respond are met

A new port building on the Ligurian coast states a connection with an ancient
vocation: establishing connections between mercantile infrastructure and the city,
as well as entering into dialogue with the shifting colours of the sky and the sea

La nuova sede dell’Autorità Portuale di Savona, realizzata
da Gianluca Peluffo con 5+1AA, costituisce il perno
attorno al quale si coagula l’obiettivo del processo
di trasformazione urbana iniziato oltre quindici anni fa:
stabilire un dialogo fra il cuore produttivo della città
(la zona del porto) e il tessuto urbano nel quale
la comunità si riconosce maggiormente (il centro storico
ottocentesco e la vecchia darsena). L’edificio,
che si trova esattamente a cavallo – sia fisicamente,
sia simbolicamente – di queste due aree, interpreta
quel concetto di contaminazione che è alla base
della trasformazione in atto. Con un ingresso dal lato
della città e un altro dal porto, il manufatto presenta
un corpo a base rettangolare, più basso, e un altro
a torre con base quadrata, più alto: il primo è dedicato
agli ambienti aperti al pubblico come bar, punti
di ritrovo, spazi per mostre, eventi e convegni,
il secondo ospita i luoghi di lavoro, l’ufficio della
presidenza e le sale riunioni. La torre è collegata

The new head office of the Port Authority of Savona,

designed by Gianluca Peluffo with 5+1AA, constitutes
the hub around which the process of urban
transformation that began over fifteen years ago
here is able to gel. It also opens a conversation
between the productive heart of the city (the port)
and the urban fabric with which the community
identifies most strongly (the 19th-century historic
centre and old dockyard). The building, which sits
exactly astride – both physically and symbolically –
these two areas, interprets a form of contamination
which is at the root of an ongoing transformation.
With one entrance on the city side and another
on that of the harbour, the structure has a lower block
with a rectangular base and a taller one in the form
of a tower with a square base. The former is devoted
to areas open to the public such as cafés, meeting
points and spaces for exhibitions, events and
conferences, while the latter houses work places,
the office of the harbour master and meeting rooms.

come un edificio ponte al di sotto del quale
la preesistente ferrovia portuale continua a svolgere
la propria attività. Alla torre è affidato poi il compito
di stabilire una relazione visiva a 360 gradi con
il paesaggio: dal quarto al settimo livello, infatti,
i piani aggettano rispetto al corpo principale ognuno
in direzione diversa, come occhi che osservano
il territorio nella sua complessità. «L’edificio si infila
nel ginepraio dell’area portuale, ancora oggi in
trasformazione, per alzare poi la “testa” e ruotarla
in tutte le direzioni al fine di stabilire un rapporto visivo
e simbolico non solo con la città e il porto, ma anche
con il mare e la montagna», racconta Peluffo.
Grazie al suo rivestimento di alluminio cangiante
che da verde-azzurro diventa specchiante verso l’alto,
l’edificio esercita la sua attitudine più poetica
rispecchiando sulla sua pelle le tinte del mare
e del cielo e proponendo così un’impalpabile forma
di dialogo anche con il paesaggio naturale.

The tower is connected directly with the lower space,

conceived as a bridge building under which the
pre-existing port railway continues its activity.
The tower is also entrusted with the task of
establishing a 360-degree visual relationship with
the landscape. From the fourth to the seventh level,
in fact, the floors jut out from the main block, each
facing in a different direction like eyes observing
the whole of the surroundings. As Peluffo states:
“The building slips into the thicket of the port area,
which is undergoing radical change, and then raises
its ‘head’, turning it in all directions in order to establish
visual and symbolic ties not just with the city and the
port, but also with the sea and the mountains”.
Thanks to its cladding of aluminium that shifts from
a bluish-green colour to a reflective surface at the top,
the building takes on its most poetic character
by mirroring the tints of the sea and the sky on its
skin, thereby proposing another clear form of dialogue,
this time with the natural setting

 È stato inaugurato lo scorso settembre il Memoriale
ai caduti d’Israele sul Monte Herzl che celebra i soldati
– donne e uomini – deceduti durante il servizio militare
dal 1860 a oggi. Opera di Kimmel Eshkolot Architects
l’edificio è scavato nel pendio di una collina e racchiude
un vuoto a sezione tronco-conica in cui gli architetti
hanno inserito una struttura a forma di paraboloide
deformato, composta da mattoni di cemento con
un’anima di alluminio che fa scivolare la luce naturale
all’interno. Attorno a questo “imbuto di luce” sale
una rampa a spirale delimitata da un muro di mattoni.
All’esterno l’edificio si presenta come una collina
rivestita di lastre di pietra di Gerusalemme.
Il memoriale condensa significati stratificati e in questo
modo riesce a parlare tanto agli addetti ai lavori
quanto alle persone non esperte (Renato De Fusco
definisce opere simili “architetture del codice multiplo”).
Ciò che viene rappresentato al visitatore è il tema
della memoria. «Noi ebrei siamo una comunità basata
sul ricordo», scriveva Martin Buber nel 1938.
«Il comune ricordo ci ha tenuti uniti e ci ha permesso
di sopravvivere». In effetti la Torah, testo di riferimento
dell’ebraismo, sprona ripetutamente a non dimenticare

commemorates the soldiers – women and men – killed
while on military service from 1860 to the present
was inaugurated last September. Designed by Kimmel
Eshkolot Architects, this building has been carved
into the slope of a hill and encloses a space with
the section of a truncated cone in which the architects
have inserted a structure in the shape of a deformed
paraboloid, built out of concrete bricks with an
aluminium core that channels the natural light inside.
Around this “funnel of light” climbs a spiral ramp
bounded by a brick wall. On the outside the building
presents the appearance of a hill clad with slabs
of Jerusalem stone. The memorial condenses layers
of meaning and thus is able to speak to both experts
and the uninformed (Renato De Fusco has described
such works as “architecture with a multiple code”).
What is represented to the visitor is the theme
of memory. As Martin Buber wrote in 1938 “We Jews are
a community based on memory. A common memory
has kept us together and enabled us to survive.”
In fact the Torah, the central reference of Judaism,
repeatedly urges people not to forget, and an

 perché la comprensione dei secoli trascorsi è considerata
un aiuto fondamentale per affrontare la vita e mettere
a fuoco correttamente gli eventi di oggi. Per onorare
la memoria e le anime dei defunti si usa accendere
una candela speciale che brucia per 24 ore, la Candela
Yahrzeit. A questa candela si sono ispirati gli architetti
per allestire il Muro dei nomi, composto da 23mila
mattoni ognuno dei quali porta inciso il nome
di un caduto e dispone di un congegno luminoso
che si accende automaticamente il giorno della sua
morte. Guardando il memoriale sotto il profilo del
progetto d’architettura, si possono rintracciare diversi
riferimenti. La sua forma esterna rievoca le tombe
a Thòlos (monumenti funerari della tarda età
del bronzo costituiti da un vano circolare, spesso
parzialmente ipogeo). L’immagine dell’imbuto di luce
ci ricorda il paraboloide di Le Corbusier nel palazzo
del Parlamento di Chandigarh, in India, ma anche
l’invaso del Pantheon a Roma (il più celebre, forse,
tra i memoriali dell’antichità). La scelta di incidere
i nomi dei caduti sui mattoncini, infine, rimanda ad altri
simili monumenti celebrativi: dal Vietnam Veterans
Memorial di Maya Lin a Washington, al Memoriale
alla Stazione Atocha di Madrid di studio FAM (dedicato
alle vittime dell’attentato terroristico dell’11 marzo 2004).

understanding of the past is considered a fundamental
aid to tackling life and bringing the events of the present
day into correct focus. To honour the memory
and the souls of the deceased it is the custom to light
a special candle that burns for 24 hours, the Yahrzeit
candle. It was this candle that inspired the architects
to create the Wall of Names, made up of 23,000 bricks,
each of which is engraved with the name of a fallen
soldier and is fitted with a small lightbulb that
automatically lights up on the day of his or her death.
Looking at the memorial from the perspective of its
architectural design, it is possible to discern several
references. Its external form is reminiscent of a tholos
or beehive tomb (a burial structure of the late Bronze
Age with a circular chamber, often located partially
underground). The image of the funnel of light recalls
the paraboloid dome of Le Corbusier’s Palace
of Assembly in Chandigarh, India, as well as the interior
of the Pantheon in Rome (perhaps the most famous
of all memorials of antiquity). The decision to engrave
the names of the dead on the bricks, finally, echoes
that of similar celebratory monuments: from Maya Lin’s
Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington to Studio
FAM’s memorial at Atocha Station in Madrid (dedicated
to the victims of the terrorist attack on 11 March 2004)

di navigazione, a ovest il Kostverlorenvaart,
a est il fiume Amstel. Per mantenere sotto controllo
l’intenso traffico fluviale lungo questi assi per
tanti anni sono stati utilizzati dei piccoli “caselli”,
luoghi di lavoro e spesso anche abitazioni
dei custodi delle acque. L’introduzione di sistemi
di controllo meccanizzati ha però reso inutile
la presenza dell’uomo, di conseguenza anche
degli edifici. Il tema della riconversione di questi
caselli è stato posto per la prima volta nel 2013
da una ricerca esposta al centro per l’architettura
Arcam di Amsterdam. Grazie al progetto Sweets

Amsterdam is crossed by two main navigation
arteries, the Kostverlorenvaart in the west
and the river Amstel in the east. For many years
small “bridge houses”, places of work that often
also served as homes for the bridge men, were used
to keep the busy river traffic on these axes under
control. However, the introduction of advanced
central operating systems has made the human
presence unnecessary, and so these buildings have
lost their role. The question of the conversion
of these bridge houses was raised for the first time
in 2013 by a study shown at the ARCAM centre
for architecture in Amsterdam. Thanks to the Sweets
project carried out by Space&Matter (born out
of a collaboration with Grayfield and the founders
of Lloyd Hotel and Cultural Embassy, Suzanne
Oxenaar, Otto Nan and Gerrit Groen), work has
begun on the transformation of 28 of these small
structures into hotel rooms. Space&Matter,
an agency run by architect-entrepreneurs, was
already well known for its creative rehabilitation
of the former De Ceuvel shipyard, fitted out with
houseboats relocated on land and now used to host
various youth-centered enterprises. This important
precedent persuaded the government to back
the Sweets project. The name is a play on the word

and are extremely varied in their characteristics.
Some of them are located in semi-suburban areas,
far from the bustle of the centre, and others in hidden

Braccia meccaniche e tapis roulant per la produzione
(giornaliera!) di 30mila cespi di lattuga in un
ambiente indoor illuminato a Led con temperatura
e umidità controllate da remoto. Non è una puntata
della sitcom Futurama ma una realtà più che
prossima, almeno in Giappone. È qui infatti che fra
pochi mesi verrà aperta la prima fattoria in cui
intelligenze artificiali faranno le veci dei contadini.
L’azienda di ortaggi che si lancia in questa nuova
avventura è la già rodata Spread.co. Da dieci anni,
presso la Kameoka Farm vicino a Kyoto, sperimenta
un sistema di coltivazione verticale intensiva
idroponica che riduce del 98% il consumo di acqua,
minimizza gli scarti di lavorazione ed elimina l’uso
di pesticidi. La nuova Techno Farm farà un passo
avanti escludendo quasi in toto il contributo umano,
a eccezione della delicata fase della semina che
verrà ancora gestita da persone in carne e ossa.
Un metodo adottabile in qualsiasi parte del mondo
che non porta solo a un risparmio della manodopera
ma migliora le condizione igieniche della fattoria
e riduce considerevolmente lo spazio richiesto
per il processo di coltivazione consentendo
di produrre oltre 120 cespi in più per metro quadrato
rispetto a una tradizionale coltivazione outdoor.
La robotica e l’automatizzazione dei processi
– insieme alla microelettronica, le nanotecnologie
e la fotonica – sono ormai strumenti dell’agricoltura
contemporanea che oggi deve affrontare un dato
allarmante: entro il 2050 saremo 9,7 miliardi (rispetto
ai 7,5 di oggi) e se non troviamo soluzioni innovative

This is not an episode of the sitcom Futurama but
a reality from the imminent future, at least in Japan.
Here in fact, in just a few months, the first farm will
open where artificial intelligence will take the place
of farm workers. The vegetable producer that is
embarking on this new venture is the already up-and-
running Spread.co. For ten years, at the Kameoka
Farm near Kyoto, it has been experimenting with
a system of vertical intensive hydroponic cultivation
that reduces the consumption of water by 98%,
minimizes waste and eliminates the use of pesticides.
This new Techno Farm will soon take another step
forward by excluding human labour almost entirely,
with the exception of the delicate sowing stage,
which will still be handled by real people. These
methods can be adopted in any part of the world
and do not just result in labour cost savings but also
improved hygienic conditions and considerable
reductions in the space required for cultivation,
making it possible to produce over 120 heads more
per square metre than in a traditional outdoor
plantation. Robotics and the automation of processes
– along with microelectronics, nanotechnology
and photonics – are key tools for contemporary
Agriculture, which today has to face up to
an alarming fact: by 2050 there will be 9.7 billion
of us (compared with 7.5 today) and if we don’t find

(quali mucche sono state munte, quanto hanno

ma che si espanderà anche oltre oceano. Perché
insieme a un’azienda olandese, gemella per intenti,
Stellapps sta sviluppando un nuovo progetto da
sperimentare in Kenya. C’è poi chi sfrutta i miliardi
di dati forniti dalle immagini satellitari per prevedere
l’andamento e la portata dei raccolti. La start-up
americana Descartes Lab ne ha fatto il suo core
business superando nei risultati, e con minori
sforzi, i censimenti mensili effettuati dall’Usda
(Dipartimento americano per l’Agricoltura) nella
previsione dei raccolti in America. L’accumulo

for a new generation of farmworkers, even in
developing countries. An emblematic example of this
is the Indian Stellapps company based in Bangalore.
In the space of just a few years it has set up a virtual
infrastructure – called SmartMoo Cloud – that allows
small or medium-sized dairy farms (from 5 to 25
cows) with no sophisticated technology to monitor
their activity and obtain reports in real time (how
many cows have been milked? How much milk has
been produced? When it is time for milking? The
results and costs of the operation, etc.). This is
a system that is increasingly catching on in India,
the world’s largest producer and consumer of milk,
but one that will also be adopted overseas. Stellapps,
for example, working with a Dutch company that
shares its aim, is developing a new project to be
deployed in Kenya. Then there are those who are
exploiting the vast amounts of data provided by
satellite images to predict crop yields. The American
start-up Descartes Lab has made this its core
business, surpassing in its accuracy, and with less
effort, the monthly estimates of yields in America
produced by the USDA (United States Department
of Agriculture). In addition to helping production,
the gathering and sharing of data and information
can also solve problems of another kind. Daral

informazioni importanti, come la diffusione
di un’epidemia. Codici identificativi associati
agli animali sono alla base anche del progetto
Smart-N di Agrioptic che in Nuova Zelanda
comunica dove sono andate a pascolare le mucche
e si assicura che in quei luoghi non vengano
utilizzati fertilizzanti chimici. La corsa alle innovazioni
tecnologiche in questo settore è insomma in grande
accelerazione. Basti pensare che il colosso di
trattori John Deere ha speso 350 milioni di dollari
per acquisire una start-up e il suo primo prodotto,
la Blue River Technology, che rende i robot capaci
di identificare le piante nocive da eliminare con
erbicida (attesa nel 2018 la versione che può colpire
erbacce, distinguendole dalle piante da raccolto,
in un’area piccola come un francobollo).
E assisteremo fra non molto alla nascita di “città
agricole” dove concentrare tutte le innovazioni
del settore. La scorsa estate è stato siglato infatti
un accordo tra il governo egiziano e la Korea-Arab
Society (KAS, una rete tra la Corea del Sud e 22
Paesi della Lega araba), per lo sviluppo di un polo
agricolo costituito da 50mila serre ecologiche
intelligenti, impianti a energia solare e impianti di
desalinizzazione dell’acqua. Forse sopra il suo cielo
vedremo volare i micro droni impollinatori sviluppati
dal National Institute of Advanced Industrial
Science and Technology di Tokyo. Fra soli 10 anni.
Technologies for example, together with Senegal’s
Ministry of Livestock, has developed a piece
of software that can be used to identify breeders,
geolocate their cattle (thereby foiling frequent thefts)
and distribute important information, such as
the spread of a disease, via SMS. Identification codes
associated with animals are also at the root
of Agrioptic’s Smart-N project in New Zealand,
which detects where cows have gone to graze and
makes sure that chemical fertilizers are not used
in those places. In short, the race for technological
innovation in this sector is speeding up. For example,
the colossus of tractor manufacture John Deere
has just spent 350 million dollars on buying
a start-up, Blue River Technology, and its first
product, which allows robots to identify weeds to be
eliminated, and in 2018 it will launch a version that
can target weeds with squirts of herbicide no larger
than a postage stamp, distinguishing them from the
surrounding crop. Before long we will be seeing the
birth of innovative “agriculture cities”. Last summer
a deal was signed between the Egyptian government
and the Korea-Arab Society (KAS, a foundation
linking South Korea and 22 members of the Arab
League) for the development of an agricultural centre
made up of 50,000 smart greenhouses, in addition
to a number of solar power and seawater desalination
plants. Perhaps we will also see, in less than a decade’s
time, the micro pollinator drones developed by the
National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and
Technology of Tokyo flying in its skies

dal rituale di incendiare un grande fantoccio di legno
a conclusione dell’evento. Dura otto giorni e circa 70mila
persone si radunano per organizzare esibizioni, mostre
d’arte, performance e per costruire architetture provvisorie
in una sorta di Carnevale liberatorio. Ciascuno porta

cibo e acqua, perché lì si trovano solo ghiaccio e caffè.

A UNIQUE EVENT
Burning Man is a festival that has been held every September since
1986 in Black Rock City, Nevada, a temporary metropolis created
on a dusty lakebed in the Black Rock desert. The name refers
to the ritual burning of a giant wooden effigy of a man at the end
of the event. Some 70,000 people gather for the eight-day event,
which includes art exhibitions, installations and performances,
as well as the construction of provisional architecture in what is also
a kind of cathartic experience. Everyone brings their own camping
equipment (including electricity generators), food and water,
because only ice and coffee is available at the site. Gifting
is the only accepted method for acquiring goods at Black Rock City
and cellphones do not work there.

Il sole sorge su una Playa fredda e polverosa... Siamo
lanciati a tutta velocità contro il vento che solleva
la polvere, onnipresente, e dobbiamo metterci
gli occhiali e la bandana. È un ambiente di proporzioni
epiche, estremamente duro. La polvere è come
una poetica nebbiolina, al cui interno oggetti
surrealistici appaiono dal nulla per poi sparire
altrettanto velocemente. Siamo diretti al Tempio
ed è una lunga cavalcata sulle nostre moto da quattro
soldi. Il Tempio è un luogo davvero magico che
non ha eguali su questa terra, è un luogo
per affliggersi pubblicamente, sfogarsi, condividere
il dolore di un estraneo, e anche se quest’ultima
affermazione sembra contraddire tutto ciò che
la civilizzazione ci ha insegnato a evitare, in quel
momento, lì sulla Playa, lo si accetta e lo si accoglie
con tutto ciò che di umano si ha dentro. Sono stato
con mia figlia al Burning Man, un’esperienza per
rafforzare il legame padre-figlia. Solo noi due,
di fronte a una situazione ben studiata che poi però
si rivela inconoscibile finché non la si vive... Perché
fondamentalmente comporta condividere con altri
la propria umanità in modo estremamente personale.
Alla fine della nostra settimana nel deserto mi sono
sentito vicino a mia figlia come mai prima. Immaginate
di entrare in un quadro di Dalí e di scoprire che
quel mondo assurdo vi dà il benvenuto, vi invita
ad accettare i paradossi dell’esistenza umana, di sé
stessi e dell’altro, in un luogo dove l’arte diventa
parte integrante della vita e non è una preziosa entità
a sé stante. È un’esperienza che ti può trasformare.
La mia impressione iniziale rimane legata alla prima
notte sulla Playa, le luci, la musica, un cambiamento
della prospettiva temporale generato da 70mila persone
che si esprimono liberamente, e alla travolgente
energia collettiva che riempie questa vasta pianura
deserta. È lecito chiedersi cosa tutto questo abbia
a che fare con l’architettura, visto che si tratta
di una città transitoria, che non offre alcuna struttura
permanente ma solo un’impalcatura urbana e sociale
ingannevolmente semplice e assai poco di ciò
che nel mondo della cultura alta di “default” verrebbe

we are riding hard against the wind, which kicks
up the ever present dust, and we have to put our
goggles and bandanas on. It is an extremely
harsh environment of epic proportions. The dust
is like a poetic myst, wherein surrealistic objects
appear out of nowhere then disappear just
as quickly. We are making our way to the Temple,
it is a long ride on our cheap playa bikes,
The Temple, a truly magical place, which has no
parallel on this earth, is a place for public
grieving, for release, for sharing a stranger’s pain,
and while that last bit sounds counter to all
that civilization has taught you to avoid, in that
moment, there on the playa, you embrace it
with all that is human inside you. Three years ago
I went with my daughter to Burning Man, it was a
Father-Daughter bonding experience just the two
of us facing a well researched but as it turns out,
unknowable experience until it is experienced...
Because fundamentally it involves sharing your
humanity with others in a deeply personal way.
At the end of our week in the desert, I felt closer
to my Daughter than I ever have. Imagine walking
into a Dalí painting, and discovering that this
absurd world welcomes you home ... welcomes
you to embrace the paradoxical qualities
of human existence, of the self and the other,
where art becomes ingrained into life, rather
than existing as separate and precious. It can
be transformative. My first impression remains
of my initial night out on the Playa, the lights,
the music the time-perspective shift created
by 70,000 people being self expressive, of the
overwhelming collective energy that fills this vast
empty plain. It is a valid question to wonder
what all this might have to do with architecture,
as this is a temporal city, that offers no permanent
structures, just a deceptively simple urban
and social framework and very little that would
be considered “publishable” in the “default”
world of high culture. An understanding of this

giudicato “pubblicabile”. Ma si può cominciare
a capire il nesso se si pensa a quali sono i nostri
obiettivi in quanto architetti per creare valore
nel mondo. Come architetti ci sforziamo di costruire
città ed edifici con un alto grado di vitalità, autenticità
e un forte senso di comunità. Desideriamo una
popolazione impegnata, che ama il proprio ambiente
e partecipa anche alla sua creazione e continua
evoluzione. E che, per estensione, si sente
responsabile della sua conservazione ed evoluzione,
pronta a infondere la propria energia culturale e
artistica, a creare tradizioni e riti in uno sforzo collettivo
da consegnare alle generazioni successive.
Idealmente questa vitalità si propaga attraverso
l’intera compagine sociale, in modo che tutti possano
partecipare e godere di questi benefici. L’idea
è diffondere questo senso di comunità solidale
oltre l’ambiente fisico, verso un vero interesse
per il benessere reciproco, perché ognuno di noi
contribuisca al successo della comunità. Come
architetti mettiamo a disposizione le strutture fisiche

to create value in the world. As architects
we strive to create buildings and cities that
have a high degree of vibrancy, authenticity,
and a strong sense of community. We desire
an engaged population that not only loves
their environment, but also participates in its
creation, and in its ongoing evolution.
The extension of which means they feel responsible
for its maintenance and improvement, and are
inspired and empowered to infuse it with their
cultural and artistic energy. They create
traditions and rituals which carry this collective
effort forward to successive generations.
Ideally this vibrancy extents across the full
range of socio-economic strata, so that everyone
participates and enjoys these benefits. If they
are successful, they will extend this caring
sense of community beyond the physical
environment, towards caring for each other’s
well being, because they sense how each

idee sbagliate su Burning Man, sui motivi per cui
le persone ci vanno e su cosa fanno lì. In base alla mia
esperienza personale, Burning Man serve a insegnarci
qualcosa sul tema “Comunità e Gentilezza attraverso
l’Arte Partecipativa”. A uno degli estremi, ci sono
alcuni che vengono per fare festa, divertirsi, indulgere
ai propri piaceri. Ma persino queste persone tornano
cambiate dall’esperienza di una comunità forte, piena
di calore umano, basata sulla gentilezza. Tornano
ispirati dalla varietà di forme di espressione personale
che vi hanno trovato, che sia Playa Art, Art Cars,
of us contributes to the success of our communities.
As architects we contribute the physical
structures that contain the workings of humanity,
but more importantly we contribute our own
creativity and imagination to imbue emotional
meaning, which in turn adds to the energy
and excitement of the community. For one week,
a city of 70,000 people organically forms
in the desert. For one week, 70,000 people create
a community that creates vibrancy, authenticity,
participation, and a deep caring, at a level
of intensity that is “off the charts”. There are
many misconceptions about Burning Man,
as to why people go and what they do there.
From my personal experience, Burning Man
serves to teach us about “Community and Kindness,
though Participatory Art”. On one extreme, some
people come to party, to play, to be self indulgent.
Even these people come away changed from
the experience of a strong caring community
based on kindness. They come away inspired

creativo che si vede in giro. Burning Man non è solo
un laboratorio di placemaking (l’arte di creare posti,
ndr), né un ambiente di grande pregio architettonico
nel senso in cui siamo soliti usarlo nella nostra
professione. Ma malgrado questo e in un qualche
modo a causa di questo, una città di 70mila persone
costruisce la propria vitalità nel modo più genuino
possibile, con il lavoro delle proprie mani.
E se lo ignoriamo, se non cogliamo l’occasione per
studiare ciò che lo fa funzionare e fiorire, potremmo
ritrovarci a essere irrilevanti per le persone che
ci siamo impegnati a servire. Perché Burning Man
funziona? Possiamo considerare la pienezza della
vitalità culturale come il rapporto tra tre valori: intensità +
varietà + partecipazione. L’intensità riguarda
la natura dell’esperienza, quanto è emozionante.
Dal primo istante in cui si attraversa quella linea
disegnata nella polvere, non si può che rimanere
sopraffatti dalla natura e dall’intensità dell’esperienza
nella Playa. Dalla mera varietà delle forme di
espressione personale. Dal punto di vista dell’oggetto
o del progetto architettonico, la varietà riguarda
anche il modo in cui valutiamo il valore dell’opera
creata. Questo aspetto della varietà è esemplificato
molto bene a Burning Man. Tra i numerosi eventi
che vi si svolgono, sulla Playa vengono esposte più
di 300 opere d’arte, che spaziano dalla scultura
Museum Grade al Jedi Dog Temple disegnato da
un bambino di cinque anni. I partecipanti riconoscono
che tutto all’interno di questa varietà ha per loro un
grande valore, perché nel caso di Burning Man ogni
opera d’arte viene donata ed è stata creata con
il cuore. In ogni caso, tutti accettano l’idea che la natura
di ogni pezzo è diversa e ognuna aggiunge valore
nel suo modo particolare. Noi, come architetti e come
intellettuali in generale, potremmo trarre grande
vantaggio se situassimo il valore progettuale in uno
spettro molto più ampio di quello che gli concediamo
oggi. La partecipazione è l’interazione diretta
e personale che si può avere con gli altri e con
la comunità in generale. La maggior parte di noi ha

or people’s creative outfits. Burning Man is not
a laboratory to simply “understand placemaking”,
it is not an “architecturally” rich environment
in the normative formal sense we use in our
profession, but in spite of this, and in some ways
because of this, a city of 70,000 people build
their own vibrancy, in the most deeply authentic
way possible, with the work of their own hands
... if we ignore this, if we don’t take an
opportunity to study what makes this work
and thrive, we may find ourselves to be irrelevant
to the people we pledged to serve. Why does
Burning Man work? We might consider the
richness of cultural vibrancy as the relationship
between three values: Depth + Range +
Engagement. Depth relates to the quality
of an experience, how moving it is. From the first
moment you cross that line drawn in the dust,
you can’t help but be overwhelmed by the quality
and intensity of your experience on the Playa.
The shear range of self expression. From an
architectural object or project standpoint, Range
includes the way we judge the value of the work
that is created. This aspect of Range is well
illustrated at Burning Man. Among the many
events at Burning Man, more than 300 artworks
are set out on the Playa. These range from
Museum Grade sculpture, to The Jedi Dog
Temple, designed by a 5 year old boy.
The participants recognize that everything
on this range has a deep value to them, because,
in the case of Burning Man, each art piece
is given as a gift, and each was created from
the heart. However they also embrace the idea
that the nature of each piece is different and
adds value each in it’s own special way. We,
as architects, and as a culture in general, might
benefit from embracing the concept of design
value across a much broader spectrum than
we currently permit. Engagement is the direct

un rapporto passivo con il proprio ambiente e si limita
ad andare al parco o al suo caffè preferito, mentre
queste attività dovrebbero includere l’arte o la musica,
la partecipazione nella cura del proprio quartiere
o l’acquisto di una panchina nuova perché possa
goderne tutta la comunità. Che si tratti della propria
via, del quartiere o della comunità più vasta del genere
umano, se non ci si sente personalmente partecipi
nella propria comunità si finirà per rimanere isolati.
Burning Man esemplifica la forza della partecipazione
in vari modi. Immaginate una città di 70mila abitanti
in qualsiasi altra parte del mondo e provate invece
a camminare in giro per questa: non vedrete alcuna
spazzatura e, se proseguite dal centro – dove
potrebbe essere passato un gruppo di netturbini –
fino alla periferia, continuerete a non trovare alcun
rifiuto. Noterete anche che non esistono bidoni della
spazzatura. Sulla Playa, i partecipanti non solo si
occupano dei propri rifiuti ma raccolgono anche quelli
degli altri e, data l’assenza di contenitori di raccolta,
li riportano al proprio Campo e alla fine dell’evento alla

personal interactions you might have with others
and the community at large. Most of us have
a passive relationship with our environments,
we go to the park, we go to our favorite cafe. Active
forms include making things like art or music,
participating in governance of the maintenance
of your neighborhood, or buying a new bench for
the community to enjoy. At it’s most active level you
share the experience of creation and care. If you
don’t feel personally engaged with your community,
whether it is your street, your neighborhood, or
the vast community of humankind, you will become
isolated. Burning Man illustrates the power of
engagement in many ways. In any other part of the
world, imagine a city of 70,000 people, as you walk
this city, you see no litter, if you continue to walk
from the city core, where there might have been
a professional group cleaning, you still find no litter
on the outskirts. You also notice there are no trash
cans. On the playa, participants not only care for
their own litter, but will pick up the litter of others,

più personale, la primissima sera trascorsa sulla Playa
incontrai una poetessa che aspettava in fila di poter
visitare il progetto di Michael Garlington Photo Chapel,
in mezzo alla polvere e sotto i raggi generosi della luna
a mezzanotte. Parlammo della vita e dell’arte, della
poesia, della fatica degli artisti e nostra per riuscire
a trovare la propria voce poetica, del dolore e dell’estasi
che fanno parte di quel percorso, e la foga della nostra
discussione crebbe fino a un livello che nel mondo
di default avrebbe raggiunto il punto di rottura.
Ma, proprio in quel momento, lei si sentì ispirata
e mi lesse una lunga e straordinaria poesia che veniva
dal suo cuore. Una poesia che parlava di sogni
e di umanità, intensamente personale e immediata,
un rapido sguardo sulla bellezza dell’anima
di una persona. Me la lesse con tale passione
che non sono ancora riuscito a spiegare il significato
di questo dono. Poi sparì. Magia della Playa.
and due to the absence of trash cans they will take
this litter back to their Camp, and ultimately back
to their hometown. So engrained is the idea that
this is your community, shared with others, that
people care deeply for the cleanliness of the whole
environment. On a more personal level, the very
first night out on the Playa I met a poet, standing
in line to visit Michael Garlington’s Chapel, in the
dust, under a generous midnight moon. We talked
about life, and art, and poetry, and the struggle
of artists, and our struggles to find our poet’s voice,
and the pain and ecstasy which is that journey,
the intensity of this discussion reached a crescendo,
which in the default world would have been
a natural breaking point. But, in that moment, she
inspired, read me a long powerful poem from the
heart. A poem about dreams – humanity – deeply
personal – immediate a glimpse into the beauty
of a persons soul, she reads this with such a passion
that I am still unable to explain the significance
of this gift… and then, she vanished… Playa Magic

by movies and TV series, and are aimed at a design-oriented group of adults. One of these
is Fuorisalone, a game developed by Studiolabo that takes its inspiration from the mutliple sites used
for Milan’s annual Furniture Fair

 «Al Fuorisalone accadono tante cose interessanti che non
sempre si riescono a raggiungere in tempo, anche
per le complicazioni degli spostamenti in città». Cristian
Confalonieri, direttore creativo di Studiolabo, che da
tempo cura il Brera Design District (uno dei maggiori
circuiti espositivi milanesi nei giorni del Salone del
Mobile), descrive così l’ispirazione di Fuorisalone, il gioco
da tavolo celebrativo dell’happening di architettura
e design in programma a Milano dal 17 al 22 aprile.
E spiega: «Abbiamo cercato di riprodurre la frenesia
di quei giorni con un gioco per quattro su una plancia che
riproduce le 68 location più importanti della Design Week:
lo scopo è raggiungerle nel momento esatto in cui si svolge
un evento, e non è facile. Chi lo fa ottiene carte icone
del design, come la poltrona P40 o la sedia Panton,
e di conseguenza punti. Vince chi ottiene il punteggio
più alto». Il motivo per cui lo studio milanese ha realizzato
con Cranio Creations questo prodotto (che si potrà
acquistare a 30 euro durante e dopo la settimana
del Salone), è il fatto che il gioco da tavolo è un oggetto
di design. «È sempre stato snobbato dai designers – spiega
Confalonieri – ma in realtà ha le stesse problematiche del
mondo del progetto. Per noi è stato interessante affrontarne
la complessità e trasferire il concept nelle meccaniche
di gioco». Finito in soffitta con l’arrivo dei videogame dagli
anni Ottanta in poi, il gioco da tavolo è tornato in auge
di recente. «Dati ufficiali non ce ne sono», dice Spartaco
Albertarelli, da 30 anni autore di giochi celebri come
Kaleidos. «Ma basta vedere come il numero di titoli
pubblicati sia in aumento: l’anno scorso sono stati circa
tremila. Il successo è dovuto a manifestazioni come Lucca
Comics & Games o la fiera di Essen, ma soprattutto
al fatto che il target nel tempo è cambiato: ieri si facevano
giochi per le famiglie, oggi per gli adulti, come dimostra
il design delle scatole, una volta ingombranti e ideali per
la cameretta, oggi quadrate e graficamente accattivanti, da
conservare nella libreria del salotto». Con il cambiamento

“There are so many interesting things happening at the
Fuorisalone and it is not always easy to get to them
because moving around town can be complicated.” This is
how Cristian Confalonieri, creative head of Studiolabo,
who for some time now has followed the Brera Design
District (one of the big exhibition circuits in the city during
Design Week), describes as the inspiration behind
Fuorisalone, a board game that celebrates the design
and architecture happening held in Milan, this year, from 17
to 22 April. “We tried to recreate the frenetic atmosphere
of those days with a game for four payers on a board that
reproduces the 68 main Design Week locations. The aim
is to get to them at the exact time the event is taking
place, which is no easy matter. Those who manage to do so
win design icon cards, such as the P40 armchair or the
Panton chair, and they are awarded points. The player
who gets the most points wins the game.” The reason
why the Milan studio decided to make this product in
collaboration with Cranio Creations (the game will be on
sale for 30 euros during and after the week of the fair)
is because a board game is also a design item. “This is
a genre that designers have always snubbed,” Confalonieri
continues, “but actually it presents the same problems
as other work of design. We found it interesting to try
to tackle the complexities involved here and transfer ideas
to the mechanics of the game.” When videogames came
out in the 1980s board games fell out of favour but
recently there has been something of a revival. “There are
no official figures,” says Spartaco Albertarelli, who over
the last 30 years or so has created famous games like
Kaleidos. “But just look at all the new games coming out.
Last year there were about 3,000. Their success is due
to events like Lucca Comics & Games and the Essen Fair,
but also to the fact that the target has changed over time.
Games used to be designed for families, now they’re
primarily for adults, as can be seen from the design
of the boxes, which were once cumbersome things kept

in una narrazione a episodi influenzata dalle scelte
e destinata a concludersi nel giro di una serie di partite.
«Sono idee mutuate dai videogame e dalle serie tv
o dal cinema – spiega Albertarelli – proprio perché
il pubblico cui si rivolgono è abituato a questo tipo
di esperienze». L’autore Rob Daviau, che già ci aveva
provato con Risk: Legacy, ci ha messo un po’ ad affermare
questo inedito concetto di game design, che si è affiancato
ai generi tradizionali: i giochi di strategia, quelli di ruolo,
i party game, quelli di carte collezionabili o le più recenti
escape room, luoghi da cui bisogna fuggire in un tempo
limitato come avviene in quelle “vere” che si trovano
in tante città. Il mercato è animato da tanti editori come
Editrice Giochi, Asmodee Italia, Oliphante, Giochi Uniti,
DV Giochi e la stessa Cranio Creations, da premi come
Il gioco dell’anno e Goblin Magnifico, e da molti autori,
tra cui in Italia Andrea Angiolino e Leo Colovini, in Francia
Roberto Fraga e Bruno Cathala. Secondo Albertarelli
il percorso per arrivare a fare questo mestiere non è
lineare, a volte conta l’intuizione geniale (come è accaduto
a Emiliano Sciarra con Bang!, diventato un best seller
mondiale). «Certamente il game design – che ormai viene
insegnato al Politecnico di Milano, allo Iulm o allo Ied –
servirà a creare una nuova generazione di autori»,
commenta Confalonieri. «E ce n’è bisogno: anche se nei
giochi da tavolo fanno capolino elementi architettonici
(come le torri di Quarto, le scale di Conquista la luna,
le sfere di Abalone), questo settore non mostra ancora
in bedrooms, but are now more streamlined and attractive,
so they look nice on a bookcase in the living-room.” And as
the users have changed, so too have the games. “Nobody
really invents anything revolutionary in today’s world,”
says Albertarelli, “as we see for example in Imagine, which
features Munari’s Più e Meno transparent cards. We have
the French to thank for this revival, who have drawn partly
from strategy-focused German games involving hardly any
risk and American ones, based more on the visual than
on the structural.” One of the most innovative new
games is Pandemic Legacy, in which players work towards
a common goal as they develop a narrative and stories,
making various choices and working towards a conclusion
over a series of games. “These are inspired by videogames,
TV series and movies,” Albertarelli explains, “because
these are the kinds of experience the target audience is
familiar with.” It took creator Rob Daviau (who tried the
idea out with Risk: Legacy) some time to establish this new
game design concept alongside more traditional games
of strategy and roleplay, party games, collectable cards
and the more recent escape rooms, places where the aim
is to break out in a short time – and which exist as “real”
places in many cities. The market has attracted a number
of publishers, such as Editrice Giochi, Asmodee Italia,
Oliphante, Giochi Uniti, DV Giochi and even Cranio
Creations, and is linked to awards like Game of the Year
and Goblin Magnifico, and there are many creators
involved, including Andrea Angiolino and Leo Colovini
in Italy, and Roberto Fraga and Bruno Cathala in France.
Albertarelli believes that there is no linear route into the
profession. You might just end up in it because of a brilliant
idea (like the one Emiliano Sciarra had for Bang!, which
became a world best seller). “Of course, game design
– a subject now also taught at Milan Polytechnic, IULM
and IED – will help create a new generation of game
designers,” Confalonieri says. “And they are needed. Even
if architectural elements (like the towers on Quarto,

agli appassionati di arredamento, e decine di altri titoli hanno
le città come sfondo per le partite, come nei recenti La Boca
e Santorini. «Le città sono straordinari pezzi di creatività»,
conclude Albertarelli. «Nella realtà le si visita per goderne
la bellezza, nei giochi le si evoca e le si ricrea».

Domanda: come ci si orienta tra gli oltre mille eventi sparsi per la città
di Milano che accompagnano il Salone del Mobile? Dal 2003 la risposta
è fuorisalone.it, la guida ufficiale alla Milano Design Week riconosciuta
e supportata dalle istituzioni milanesi. Creata da Studiolabo,
fuorisalone.it è però molto di più di una guida. È una piattaforma

la promozione del design come evento e come performance.
Non è un’idea mondana ed effimera della progettazione. È piuttosto
la convinzione che portare il design fuori dagli spazi ufficiali per
innestarlo nel tessuto urbano significa renderlo accessibile a tutti.

are working their way into board games, the sector still doesn’t
have a well-established graphic division. So, for Fuorisalone
we worked with illustrator Silvia Gherra to come up with a map
that could be hung up like a poster. As a novice investigating
this world, though, I saw titles that were striking for their
design, like Photosynthesis with its cardboard trees,
and T.I.M.E Stories with a simple white box that looks like
something made by Apple. It’s also interesting to see how the
digital and analogue world are working alongside each other,
with games like A Tale of Pirates, where you need an app
to play.” Games are increasingly drawing on architecture and
design. Dream Home, for example, appeals to furnishing
enthusiasts, and dozens of other games have cities as
their basic layout, like the recent La Boca and Santorini.
As Albertarelli concludes “Cities are hotbeds of creativity.
In real life they are visited and enjoyed for their beauty,
in games they are evoked and recreated.”

Trasparenti e sospese. Le architetture di stoffa

di Do Ho Suh sembrano sul punto di svanire.
Nelle sue installazioni ci appaiono corridoi,
sottoscala, porte, spazi residuali di vita,
di passaggio tradotti in tessuti impalpabili
e scanditi da colori irreali, onirici. Aleggiano
come fantasmi. Sono le stanze della sua memoria,
gli studi in cui ha lavorato, le case in cui ha vissuto,
gli ingressi che ha attraversato da migrante.
C’è la casa d’infanzia a Seul, c’è la casa-studio
da ragazzo a New York, e poi quella di Rhode
Island, gli studi di Berlino e Londra. Ogni architettura
è tradotta in un doppelgänger: una replica
sentimentale, astratta e allo stesso tempo
dettagliatissima, in scala uno a uno, realizzata
stratificandone i segni in un processo di registrazione
estenuante. Prima l’artista coreano riveste
gli interni, stende e incolla alle pareti grandi fogli

Transparent and suspended. Do Ho Suh’s architecture

of cloth almost seems to be on the point of vanishing.
In his installations we find corridors, cupboards
below staircases, doors, the residual spaces of life,
of movement, translated into fabric and marked by
unreal, dreamlike colours. They hover like ghosts.
They are the rooms of his memory, the studios he has
worked in, the houses he has lived in, the entrances
he passed through as a migrant. There’s his childhood
home in Seoul, his house-studio as a young man
in New York, and then the one on Rhode Island, the
studios in Berlin and London. Each work of architecture
is turned into a doppelgänger: a sentimental replica,
abstract and at the same time highly detailed, on
a scale of one to one, created by layering its signs
in an exhausting process of recording. First the
Korean artist lines the interiors with large sheets
of drawing paper, sticking them onto the walls.

A questo punto, inizia un delicatissimo frottage,
una registrazione dello stato di fatto, come
un calco. Doh Ho Suh usa una semplice matita.
Con questa ripassa, sfuma, ritocca la superficie
bianca, che così cattura spigoli e minuzie:
una tessitura di segni che raccontano il luogo,
la sua storia e il passare del tempo. Appaiono
una maniglia, un vecchio interruttore, una crepa,
lo stipite di una porta. L’architettura resta così
impressa su carta. È il suo modo per dire addio
a un luogo. Forse. Oppure di tenerlo sempre
con sé. A questo punto, l’artista traduce l’abito
di carta in stoffe cangianti, come un cartamodello.
Il risultato si concretizza in un’installazione
percorribile, dentro e fuori. «Un’architettura

The result is not so much wallpaper as a second skin
that coats every surface. At this point he begins
an extremely delicate work of frottage, a recording
of the state of affairs, like a tracing. Do Ho Suh
uses an ordinary pencil. With it he rubs, shades
and retouches the white surface, capturing edges
and minute details: a texture of marks that speaks
of the place, its history and the passage of time.
A handle, an old light switch, a crack, a part
of a door appears. This architecture also leaves
an impression on paper. It’s his way of saying goodbye
to a place. Perhaps, or of keeping it with him forever.
At this point, the artist translates the coating of paper
into iridescent fabric, as if it were a paper pattern.
The result an installation that can be explored,
on the inside and outside. “An architecture of the soul,
a place of memory,” as Do Ho Suh puts it, who was

una gigantografia illusiva, che apre una finestra
dove un tempo correva la ferrovia.

that has accumulated my presence and my energy
into something that has physical and metaphorical

di connessione, non solo negli elementi che compongono gli apparecchi,
ma anche nella possibilità di controllo remoto delle funzioni – da smartphone

Artificial lighting technology is evolving rapidly. And many of the
developments are about connections, in terms not just of the elements that
make up appliances, but also and more importantly about the opportunities
for remote control – from a smartphone or tablet – and interaction with
human presence changing daylight conditions, enabling them to automatically
modulate their intensity (and thus save energy). But now things are to be
taken to an even higher level, as connectivity boundaries are pushed back
still further and efforts are made to replace harmful electro-magnetic waves

and lamps are adapting accordingly. They are being stripped of wires, fitted
with rechargeable batteries or battery packs, or else can be charged through
a computer (via a micro USB connection) for greater autonomy. These are
solutions that prove useful also in outdoor contexts. In such cases they can have
a silicon body that closes up for easy transportation or one made of rustproof
painted aluminium to illuminate outdoor dinner parties. The latter take their

 Il mosaico si rinnova. Le tecniche e i materiali
utilizzati non sono più solo quelli tradizionali.
Nuove soluzioni scaturiscono dall’incontro
tra tecnologia, ricerca e progetto. I designer
applicano in questo ambito riflessioni proprie,
le aziende sperimentano lavorazioni inedite
o le mutuano da altri settori.
In generale si percepisce un diffuso desiderio
di rigenerazione di un’arte che si tramanda
da millenni. Così Mutaforma, nuovo
marchio e nuovo prodotto, lavora nell’ambito
dei materiali aumentati, cioè integrabili
ad altri materiali. Vetro extrachiaro tagliato a
diamante dallo spessore di 1 mm (decorativo)
o 2 mm (alto calpestio), attraverso
un processo brevettato, è implementato
da particelle organiche e metalliche con
una tecnica di sublimazione per potenziarne
la luminosità. Questi piccoli frammenti
di vetro si chiamano Tilla, hanno dimensioni
da mm 1,5x1,5 a mm 7x7, fino a tasselli
con dimensioni 26,2x10x2 mm indicati per
ricoprire superfici più ampie. La ricerca di
Gumdesign – Laura Fiaschi e Gabriele Pardi –
FRIUL MOSAIC, Paesaggio, design Gumdesign Elementi di marmo di forma e texture diverse componibili riguarda invece un materiale di tradizione

possono vivere separatamente o assemblate,
permettendo composizioni complesse.
Il prodotto si chiama Paesaggio. Nel caso di
Paola Navone per Decoratori Bassanesi sono
le geometrie casuali a connotare il progetto.
Gli elementi curvilinei che compongono
il mosaico di grès porcellanato Bonbon sono
realizzati per stampo in tre forme differenti
– ma tutte inscrivibili in uno stesso cerchio –
e nell’assemblaggio su rete si orientano
sempre in modo diverso. Un’impostazione
analoga a quella di Greg Natale per il
mosaico di vetro Bisazza che utilizza
la potenzialità espressiva della collaudata
tecnica digitale disegnando con le tessere
«una trama decorativa infinita, che si ripete
senza limiti». Infine Appiani – unico ad
avvalersi del processo di monopressocottura
nella lavorazione del mosaico – nel nuovo
progetto ancora in via di definizione,
ma presentato all’ultimo Cersaie, propone
l’inserimento del mosaico (cm 1,2x1,2)
in lastre di grande formato, per ottenere,
con la combinazione dei diversi materiali,
inaspettate scenografie.

Mosaic is getting a makeover, with new
techniques and materials now appearing
alongside more traditional ones. Technology,
research and design are coming together to
drive this process of change. Designers are
also bringing their own ideas to the field, and
firms are trying out innovative manufacturing
methods or ones borrowed from other sectors.
All of this confirms a general desire to revamp
this art form, which has been around for
thousands of years. Mutaforma, a new brand
and a new product, works in the field
of augmented materials, i.e. ones that can
be integrated with other materials. In a new
patented process, extra-clear, diamond-cut
glass with a thickness of 1 mm (decorative)
or 2 mm (for heavy use) is supplemented with
organic and metallic particles involving a
sublimation technique that adds to its
brilliance. These tiny glass fragments, called
Tilla, measure between 1.5x1.5 mm and 7x7
mm, or can be supplied in 26.2x10x2 mm sizes
to cover larger surfaces. Meanwhile, research
by Gumdesign (Laura Fiaschi and Gabriele

The individual tesserae, regularly shaped by an
industrial process, become a kind of alphabet
forming countless compositions. These include
seven mesh-mounted variables, produced
in three shades of marble and four standard
textures, that offer a choice of geometric
effects and can stand separately or be used
in combination with others to create complex
compositions. This product is called Paesaggio
(Landscape). In the case of Paola Navone’s
creation for Decoratori Bassanesi, the design
is characterised by random geometries. The
curvilinear elements that make up the Bonbon
porcelain stoneware mosaic are moulded into
three different shapes – all of them fit within
the same circle – and when mounted onto
mesh always face in different directions.
This is a similar approach to the one used
by Greg Natale for the Bisazza glass mosaic,
which goes beyond a well-established digital
technique so that these tesserae can form
“countless decorative patterns that can be
repeated indefinitely”. Finally, Appiani uses
single pressure firing for mosaic production
(the only one to do so) for its new design
project, which is still being developed but was
presented at the latest edition of Cersaie.
The mosaic tile (1.2x1.2 cm) is incorporated
into large slabs. This, along with combinations
of different materials, produces unexpected
visual effects

a Bolzano in occasione della conferenza sulla
mobilità di Klimahouse. Questa eco-city ispirata
alla yurta e disegnata dal tedesco Stefan Schmitz
– inaugurazione attesa nel 2030 – vuole essere
una “città a misura d’uomo”: avrà 350mila abitanti
e una struttura radiale e insieme policentrica in cui
muoversi prevalentemente in bici e con mezzi
pubblici. Siamo vicino al Deserto del Gobi: grandi
cisterne consentiranno di recuperare le acque
