 Grande protagonista di questo numero di Percorsi in Ceramica è ancora una volta un’opera
Hotel Regeneration exhibition
di Renzo Piano, il Tribunale di Parigi, “uno strano grattacielo di 160 metri …una lanterna
magica che trasmette serenità” come lo definisce lo stesso progettista.
Opera di grande impatto, che pur nella sua mole si offre come un’architettura leggera,
estremamente luminosa e innovativa anche nella sensazione che suscita nel visitatore.
Per noi ancora una volta è stata un’importante collaborazione, un’occasione di crescita e
di ricerca che ci riconduce ad altri importanti opere dove lo studio RPBW ha scelto lastre
ceramiche Casalgrande Padana.
Ricordiamo l’Auditorium Niccolò Paganini a Parma , Villa Nave (sede dello studio RPBW e
della Fondazione Renzo Piano) a Genova Vesima, il Centro Visitatori e Monastero Santa
Chiara a Ronchamp, intervento sul Monastero a servizio di uno dei più importanti capolavori
di Le Corbusier, la Cappella di Ronchamp, il polo industriale Pirelli a Settimo Torinese e infine
il Campus di Manhatanville della prestigiosa Columbia University.
Nella seconda parte della rivista pubblichiamo le novità relative alla collezione Kontinua, con
grandi lastre e spessori sottili e un richiamo alla presenza dell’azienda a fianco dell’architetto
Simone Micheli durante la Design Week milanese a conferma della vicinanza di Casalgrande
Padana al mondo del contract.
Infine Grand Prix, per ricordare a tutti i progettisti la scadenza del 31 dicembre 2018, di
questo prestigioso concorso che premia l’utilizzo di lastre ceramiche a marchio Casalgrande
Padana nel progetto architettonico.

up with the RPBW studio once more
Taking centre stage once again in this issue of Percorsi in Ceramica is a creation by Renzo
Piano: the Paris Courthouse. In the words of the architect himself, it is “a strange, 160 metre
skyscraper… a magic lantern that conveys a sense of serenity.”
Despite the substantial size of the striking building, there is a feeling of lightness about
the architecture. It is extremely bright and innovative in a number of ways, including in the
sensations it provokes in visitors.
It was another significant joint project for us and it provided an opportunity for growth and
experimentation while calling to mind other important initiatives for which the Renzo Piano
Building Workshop has chosen Casalgrande Padana ceramic slabs.
Among them are the Niccolò Paganini Auditorium in Parma, Villa Nave (the headquarters of
the Renzo Piano Building Workshop and the Renzo Piano Foundation) in Vesima (Genoa),
infrastructural work with a Visitors Centre and a Poor Clare Convent on the site of the
chapel in Ronchamp (which is one of Le Corbusier’s most important masterpieces), the
Pirelli industrial complex in Settimo Torinese, and finally the Manhattanville Campus of the
illustrious Columbia University.
In the second part of the magazine, you can find the latest news from the Kontinua
collection, with its large but slender slabs. There is also a look back at Milan Design Week,
where Casalgrande Padana appeared alongside the architect Simone Micheli, underlining its

close ties with the contract market.
Finally, we would like to remind designers everywhere that 31 December 2018 is the
deadline for our Grand Prix: a prestigious competition for architectural projects featuring

delle vicende che interessano uno dei più
grandi cantieri aperti in Francia negli ultimi
anni: quello del quartiere di Clichy-Batignolles
nella settore nord ovest della città. Un sito
incentrato sulla trasformazione dello scalo
ferroviario di Batignolles, parte della prima

made up of stacked elements… a magical
lantern, a levitating presence which conveys a
feeling of serenity”.
Yet to truly understand the meaning and
philosophy behind the project, it’s vital that we
look at this new piece of architecture against
the backdrop of developments in what has
become one of the most rapidly changing
neighbourhoods in all of Paris in recent years.

andato in disuso a partire dagli anni ’70, che ha
sviluppato un tema progettuale e un metodo
di approccio di grande attualità (basti pensare
ai programmati interventi del vicino futuro
sugli scali ferroviari milanesi), dove la strategia
di riqualificazione urbana è da esaminare con
attenzione, per fasi di attuazione e sviluppi
progettuali giocati sulla diversità e la miscela
delle funzioni. Il concorso per la riqualificazione
degli oltre 50 ettari dell’area, bandito nel 2003
dall’Amministrazione Comunale, è aggiudicato
al gruppo formato dall’urbanista François
Grether affiancato dalla paesaggista Jacqueline
Osty e dalla società d’ingegneria OGI. Dopo
una prima idea di candidare l’area come sede
dei giochi olimpici del 2012, poi tramontata,

Serving as a bridge between the city and the suburbs, the building provides a continuation
of Martin Luther King Park, which its three roof gardens overlook. At 160 metres in height,
it rewrites the very definition of what a skyscraper is, with its different sized glass-clad blocks
stacked one on top of the other in a staircase pattern.

has seen new life breathed into it following
the transformation of the Batignolless railway
station, which formed part of France’s first-
ever railway line. The station progressively
fell into disuse from the 1970s onwards,
yet the new design and general approach
to the redevelopment project has been as
contemporary as they come (see the work
planned for Milan’s train stations in the near
future).
Each phase of the urban redevelopment
strategy deserves close examination, with
its focus on diversity and mixed functions.
Launched in 2003 by the city council,
the tender for the redevelopment of the
50-hectare area was won by a group
comprising urban planner François Grether,
landscape architect Jacqueline Osty, and
engineering company OGI. After an initial idea
of using the area to host the 2012 Olympics
fell by the wayside, the group set about
transforming the site from a logistics hub into
a centre of urban innovation. The objective
of “environmental excellence” – part of the
Olympics bid – was maintained, with the
aim of creating a modern, emissions-free
neighbourhood. The area was to be a place
capable of uniting the city and the suburbs,
with measures taken to offset climate factors
and promote social redistribution, a multi-
functional hub comprising a variety of different
architectural and landscape elements.
The Courthouse itself is like a huge new urban
park (it overlooks Martin Luther King Park,
which was the first part and a key feature of
the redevelopment work), designed to act
as a bridge between the new areas of the
neighbourhood and the old city to the south,
which flows into the existing Square des
Batignolless. Opened in 1862, the lush park

Permeabile da ben quattordici ingressi e
attraversato da tracciati che estendono la
trama urbana esistente, il Parco è segnato
ai suoi bordi da ventisette lotti tra cui quello
occupato dal nuovo Tribunale di Parigi che
presentiamo in queste pagine. Il Parco
esteso per dieci ettari, insieme ai 6.500 mq
di verde privato e ai 16.000 mq di giardini
pensili (tra cui quelli del nuovo Tribunale), è
parte di un sistema infrastutturale naturale
attentamente calibrato, a sostegno della
biodiversità e in grado di rispondere al diffuso
fenomeno urbano dell’isola di calore. Le
scelte strategiche risultate vincenti e che
caratterizzano il bordo edificato chiamato
a disegnare il nuovo quartiere, il suo Parco,
e ad occupare la sede dei binari ferroviari
dismessi, sono essenzialmente tre. La prima si
concentra sulla varietà delle funzioni; oltre alla
residenza (50% social housing, 30% a mercato
libero e 20% a prezzo controllato), al terziario

Empire as part of Haussmann’s public works
drive, designed by the landscape architect Jean
Charles Alphand according to the style of an
English landscape garden.
With over 14 entrances and parks snaking
throughout, Martin Luther King Park is
surrounded by 27 plots, including the new
Paris Courthouse profiled here. The park
encompasses a total of ten hectares, plus
6,500 square metres of private green space
and 16,000 square metres of roof gardens
(including those of the new Courthouse). It
forms part of a carefully planned system of
natural infrastructure designed to support
biodiversity and tackle the common urban
phenomenon of the heat-island effect.

e ad attività industriali come un cementificio,
si prevede un servizio urbano d’eccezione,
appunto il nuovo Tribunale cittadino, chiamato
anche simbolicamente a essere protagonista
del cambiamento e della riqualificazione
di questo brano di città. La seconda scelta
indica come elemento complementare alla
complessa serie di funzioni la corrispondenza
di una necessaria varietà formale delle
nuove architetture e dei tipi edilizi, evitando
d’incorrere, come ad esempio alla Bicocca
di Milano, in quartieri monostilistici dove il
controllo della monotonia dei blocchi edilizi
ripetuti con poche varianti, è affidato alla
rigidità della maglia regolare ortogonale di
‘fondazione’. Infine, la società pubblica Paris
Batignolless Aménagement, responsabile
del processo di pianificazione, elabora in
tale vettorialità una complessa procedura
concorsuale individuando venti operatori

immobiliari (che acquisteranno i terreni,
rispondendo però alla regia del controllo
pubblico) e un maggior numero di architetti
francesi e internazionali, cui è affidato il
compito di fare del nuovo quartiere una sorta
di laboratorio progettuale di architettura
contemporanea a scala urbana. In questo
complesso e innovativo scenario d’intervento
si colloca il nuovo Tribunale parigino nato
da un contratto di paternariato stipulato dal
Ministero di Giustizia con la società Arelia
(appartenente al gruppo Bouygues che si
occuperà anche della gestione e manutenzione
dell’intero complesso una volta entrato in
funzione) che ha affidato la progettazione
del complesso allo studio RPBW. Come nel
Centre Pompidou (1971) che lega Renzo
Piano a Parigi in modo inossidabile e che egli
descrive come “un villaggio medioevale che
si sviluppa in altezza con le piazze una sopra

was a neighbourhood centred around the
principle of diversity. In addition to housing
(50% social housing, 30% free market, and
20% controlled pricing), there are third-sector
and commercial facilities, administrative and
recreational spaces, schools, medical centres,
an innovative waste treatment hub, and
industrial services including a cement plant.
One of the most important new residents of
all is perhaps the noblest of all civic service
providers – the new city courthouse, envisaged
as a symbolic witness to the transformation
and renovation of this area of the city.
The second key strategic choice was to
ensure that the complex variety of different
services was mirrored by a range of different
architectural styles and building types, to avoid
the creation of a mono-stylistic neighbourhood
like Milan’s Bicocca, for example, where
monotonous blocks are repeated with
few variations, with standard orthogonal
foundations reigning supreme. The public body
Paris Batignolless Aménagement, who were
responsible for the planning process, therefore
devised a complex tender process which
identified 20 real-estate operators (who would
buy the land but adhere to public control) and a
large number of architects from France and the
rest of the world who were tasked with turning
the new neighbourhood into a kind of urban
experiment centred around contemporary
architecture.
The new Paris Courthouse sits at the centre
of this complex and innovative scene. It is the
result of a partnership agreement between
the Ministry of Justice and the company Arélia
(part of the Bouygues group, which will also be
responsible for the running and maintenance
of the entire complex when it becomes
active), who entrusted RPBW with the task of
designing the complex. Renzo Piano already
has an unbreakable bond with Paris as a result
of the Centre Pompidou (1971) project, which
he describes as “a medieval village which

courthouse – which towers over the park in
Clichy-Batignolless and is located at the top of
its north-south diagonal on an L-shaped plot
overlooking the city ring road – is made up of
a number of blocks stacked one on top of the
other, with three large roof gardens (along with
greenhouses and winter gardens) underlining
the divide between the building’s four large
glass-clad blocks. There are 323 trees split
between the hectare of rooftop greenery, split
into three sections at different heights. The
green spaces are without doubt an integral
part of the building, whose base is wider than
the three blocks it supports above, giving the
building as a whole a sense of lightness. The
easterly and westerly glass frontages extend
beyond the edges of the building (which
features a total of 50,000 square metres
of façade with a reflection factor of 34%),

lunghezza formate dai pannelli solari, collocati
in aggetto e inclinati a mo’ di brise soleil, e che
ricordano delle partiture musicali, declinate
in sorta di ‘note architettoniche’ sospese,
tracciate sui grandi fogli del rivestimento
vetrato. Superfici segnate anche dal
significativo taglio verticale in cui scorrono
su entrambe i fronti gli ascensori panoramici.
Nella base di quattro livelli si sviluppa il grande
spazio d’ingresso che costituisce il punto
centrale dell’intero complesso; si tratta di
quella che è chiamata nelle corti di giustizia
francesi la “salle des pas perdu” che mette
in collegamento i servizi e le diverse sezioni
del Tribunale e che accoglie le 8.800 persone
giornaliere distribuite su una superficie
complessiva di 110.000 mq. In questo
ambiente, monumentale e sereno allo stesso
tempo, scale che si incrociano poste ai vertici
e ballatoi aperti sullo spazio a tutt’altezza di
ventisette metri, si uniscono alla serie di alte
e sottili colonne bianche di acciaio chiamate
a sostenere il soffitto che cattura la luce del
giorno tramite una griglia regolare di cinque
file di diciotto lucernari circolari appositamente
disegnati (le “Marylin”). Questi nel primo
giardino pensile (7.000 mq in cui è ubicato il
ristorante del personale) emergono in modo
scultoreo nel verde come delle ‘conchiglie
architettoniche’ bianche, caratterizzate dalla
loro figura plastica con bordo inclinato secondo
l’asse di irradiamento solare. Un ingresso,
quello principale, pensato non per incutere
soggezione, ma fiducia nel visitatore: “entrando
nel palazzo di giustizia si è fragili. Questo stato
di fragilità, deve essere considerato. Dobbiamo
creare uno spirito di fiducia per la persona
che sarà giudicata. Si deve ispirare fiducia,
creare un clima di calma e serenità, ma anche
una certa austerità” (Renzo Piano). All’atrio
maggiore posto centralmente se ne affiancano
due della stessa altezza collocati a nord e a
sud del blocco di base dell’edificio, tra loro
collegati da un percorso lungo centossessanta

resembling huge, transparent leaves. At the
top, brise-soleil solar panels jut out at different
lengths, creating the illusion of a musical score
– the panels as the “architectural notes” and
the huge glass frontages as the paper. The
exterior of the building is also dominated by
huge vertical incisions on both sides that house
the lifts, which offer stunning panoramic views.
Located in the four-storey base is a large
entrance space, which represents the centre of
the entire complex. In the French legal system,
this is known as the “salle des pas perdus”,
connecting the various services with the
other sections of the courthouse. Every day,
it sees the passage of 8,800 people through
its 110,000 square metre surface area. It is
both imposing and serene at the same time,
with staircases that cross over one another
at either end, and open walkways overlooking
the 27-metre-high space, characterised by
a series of tall, slim white columns in steel,
used to support the ceiling, which captures
the daylight thanks to a regular pattern of
five rows of 18 specially designed skylights
(the “Marylins”). In the first roof garden (a
7,000 m2 space home to the staff canteen),
the skylights emerge from the greenery like
sculptures of white, architectural shells, with
their fluid shaping and sloped edges designed
to let in as much sunlight as possible. The main
entrance is designed not to intimidate, but
to instil confidence in the visitor. “When you
enter a courthouse, you are fragile,” explains
Piano. “This state of fragility has to be taken
into account. We need to breed confidence in
the people there to be judged. It’s important
to inspire this confidence, create a climate
of calm and serenity, but also to maintain a
certain sense of austerity”. The main, central
atrium is accompanied by a further two of
the same height, located to the north and
south of the building’s base, connected by a
160-metre walkway. Atop the base sit the
three hanging blocks, which are separated

separati, al diciannovesimo e ventinovesimo
piano (dei trentotto piani complessivi), dagli

base di appoggio, hanno la stessa larghezza,
ma lunghezze differenti, che si riducono in
modo armonico salendo verso l’alto, creando
una figura a gradoni che si attesta in modo
svettante, ma con leggere rientranze di blocco
in blocco, sull’asse viabilistico che scorre
sottostante. Particolare attenzione è stata
rivolta alla definizione degli ambienti interni
con largo impiego di legno, nei parquet e nei
pannelli di faggio evaporato delle boiserie delle
novanta aule e degli uffici, per la maggior parte

by another two roof gardens located on the
19th and 29th floors (of 38), planted with holly
oak and shrubs. The three blocks – which are
offset from the base – are equal in width but
differ in length, with each one getting shorter
the higher they go, creating a bold staircase
effect, though the walkways that penetrate the
base of each block go some way to breaking
up the imposing masses. Particular care was
invested into the design of the internal spaces,
with extensive use of wood, most notably the
parquet flooring and dried beech panelling in
the 90 rooms and offices, the majority of which
benefit from natural light filtered through the
glass façade.
The designers chose to work with Casalgrande
Padana for the surfaces in the public areas,
corridors and bathrooms, opting for both
neutral tones (Grigio Marostica and Raggio di
Luna from the Marte collection) and brighter
shades (Bianco Assoluto, Bianco B and Grigio
Cenere from the Unicolore collection). These

Dal punto di vista delle prestazioni energetiche
il nuovo Tribunale è da considerarsi
all’avanguardia soddisfando i requisiti dell’eco-
quartiere su cui sorge producendo con i
pannelli solari 175 MW/ con un consumo di
75kWp/mq annui (circa la metà del consumo
delle torri per uffici più recenti sorte alla
Défense). La certificazione in corso HQE (lo
standard francese di alta qualità ambientale)
è data da un buon livello di inerzia termica, dai
sistemi di ventilazione naturale, dall’impiego
di dispositivi atti al recupero del calore,
dall’integrazione dei pannelli fotovoltaici
in facciata (assunti anche come elemento
compositivo del progetto). Quelli elencati
sono solo alcuni degli elementi della strategia
energetica adottata, che denuncia l’attenzione
emergente e necessaria nell’utilizzo di energie
alternative per gli edifici pubblici. Infine,
nonostante la struttura modulare e ortogonale
compatta dell’edificio, questo è stato pensato
come ‘organismo flessibile’, in grado di
assumere nel tempo diverse configurazioni
interne per soddisfare le esigenze del domani e
gli eventuali cambiamenti del modo di operare
del sistema giudiziario.

in terms of both resistance and practicality,
with a total of 21,000 m2 used. The tiles help
to underline the regular layout of the spaces,
while the continuity and sleekness provided
by the tiles help to link the different spaces
together.
In terms of energy performance, the new
courthouse is right at the cutting edge,
adhering to the requirements of the new
eco-neighbourhood. The solar panels produce
175 MW/, while consumption is 75kWp/
m2 per year (roughly half that of the office
tower blocks recently built in La Défense). The
complex has been awarded HQE certification
(France’s environmental standard) on account
of its good level of thermal inertia, natural
ventilation systems, use of heat recovery
devices, and the addition of photovoltaic
panels to the façade (these also play a key
role in the design). These are just a few of the

in the public building sector. Last but not
least, despite the building’s modular, compact
orthogonal structure, the complex was
nonetheless envisaged as a “flexible organism”
that would be capable of transforming its
internal spaces to satisfy future needs and any
changes that may occur to the way the legal
system works.

terrazzo alla veneziana al suolo per le parti

A cosa è dovuta questa scelta?
STEFANO MARRANO Con la scelta dei mate-
riali di finitura interna abbiamo cercato di resta-
re coerenti con l’idea iniziale della metafora
simbolica della giustizia che faceva riferimen-
to alla montagna bianca: più precisamente per
le finiture interne (suolo, muri e soffitti) degli
spazi pubblici più rappresentativi (Salle des Pas
Perdus), abbiamo cercato una stessa tonalità di
bianco per i diversi materiali impiegati, al fine
restituire un fondo neutro costante, sul quale
le boiseries di faggio evaporato potessero flut-
tuare e nell’insieme restituire degli spazi solen-
ni, ma non aggressivi, spazi sobri e rispettosi
del fruitore.
Nelle aule di audienza il legno è il materiale prin-
cipale per ragioni funzionali acustiche e per ren-
dere dal punto di vista estetico gli spazi pubblici
delle aule di audienza più conviviali e sobri.
Nella Salle des Pas Perdus le pannellature di
legno, si presentano come dei quadri sospesi in
un contesto di bianco uniforme e, oltre alla loro
funzione acustica, aiutano a percepire la pro-
fondità dello spazio disegnandone le prospetti-
ve con ritmo “calmo”.
Il legno, grazie alla luce che lo esalta e lo valo-

rizza, vibra e riscalda gli ambienti con vivacità
sobria, invita alla calma e al rispetto.
Il legno come materiale è un simbolo di civiltà.
Il Tribunale, proprio per la natura delle attività
svolte al suo interno, è un luogo che mette in
soggezione le persone che lo frequentano dalle

The design of the new Paris Courthouse is
centred around a few specific elements, with
prominence given to wood in the hearing
rooms and some of the offices, ceramic
materials for the service areas, and wood
panelling and Venetian terrazzo flooring
for the public section of the Salle des Pas
Perdus. What was the reasoning behind this
decision?
STEFANO MARRANO Through the materials
we chose for the interior finishes, we tried to
remain consistent with the initial idea of the
symbolic meaning of justice – the concept of
the white mountain. For instance, for the floor-
ing, walls and ceilings of the most important
public areas, such as the Salle des Pas Perdus,
we tried to use the same shade of white
across all the different materials we used. The
idea was to create a constant, neutral back-
drop against which the panelling in steamed
beech could sit. Overall, we wanted to create
spaces that were solemn yet not intimidating
– spaces that were simple and respectful of
their users.
Wood is the main material used in the hear-
ing rooms, for practical reasons in terms of the
acoustics, and for making the public areas of
these rooms aesthetically more convivial and
subdued.
In the Salle des Pas Perdus, the wood panelling
resembles paintings hung against a uniform,
white backdrop. In addition to their acoustic
qualities, they help to create a sense of depth,
bringing a gentle rhythm to the layout of the
room.
Emphasised and enhanced by the light, the
wood resonates and brings warmth to the
rooms with an understated vibrancy, promot-
ing calm and respect.
Wood, after all, is a symbol of civilisation.
By the very nature of the activities that take
place within it, the Courthouse is a place that

principalmente per ragioni funzionali: grande
resistenza all’usura, facilità di manutenzione
e igiene. Oltre alla funzionalità, questi prodot-
ti, presentano un aspetto materico, sobrio e
“caldo” che si distingue rispetto ad altri prodotti
della stessa categoria. E’ stato importante dare
identità e coerenza à tutti gli spazi dei servizi
del Tribunale.
P.C. Le normative francesi legate alle
architetture pubbliche richiedono particolari
requisiti prestazionali per le ceramiche da
impiegarsi?
S.M. I requisiti prestazionali per le ceramiche
(e generalmente per tutti i materiali) dipendo-
no dalle destinazioni degli spazi dove vengono
impiegati: soprattutto per le finiture al suolo
esistono classificazioni per il trattamento anti-
scivolo della superfice di calpestio, per le pre-
stazioni meccaniche, fisiche e chimiche: resi-
stenza all’usura-resistenza alla punzonatura-
impermeabilizzazione- resistenza agli agenti
chimici (UPEC).
Per gli spazi dove si praticano attività legate
all’alimentare (es cucine) bisogna tener conto
dei requisiti d’igiene.
P.C. Il trattamento degli interni sembra
ricercare più una sorta di pacato comfort
che un carattere celebrativo-istituzionale
suggerito dalla funzione di Palazzo di
Giustizia. È questa una scelta progettuale o
programmatica perseguita nello sviluppo del
progetto?

can intimidate the people that visit it, what-
ever their story. This can lead to agitation and
unease – hence why it was so vital that we
restored a feeling of calm and serenity within
these spaces.
P.C. The ceramics provided by Casalgrande
Padana for the internal spaces feature
neutral colours, including bright white and
two shades of grey. Why did you go for those
colours? What kind of performance attributes
are required in the spaces where the ceramic
materials were used?
S.M. We chose ceramic materials produced
by Casalgrande Padana for the service areas
mainly for functional reasons. They are highly
resistant to wear and tear, easy to maintain,
and very hygienic. In addition to their function-
ality, these products have a really textured,
understated and warm appearance which sets
them apart from similar products. It was really
important for us to give identity and continuity
to the services areas in the Courthouse.
P.C. Do French public architecture
regulations include any specific performance
requirements for ceramics?
S.M. Regulations for ceramics (and for all
materials in general) depend on where they
are going to be used. For flooring in particu-
lar, there are classification systems for the
anti-slip treatment of the surface and for its
mechanical, physical and chemical attributes:
resistance to wear and tear, resistance to
perforation, waterproofing and resistance to
chemical agents (UPEC).
For areas where food activities take place (e.g.
kitchens), you have to consider hygiene regula-
tions too.
P.C. The interiors seem to be striving to

create a sense of quiet comfort rather than
the pomp and ceremony you might associate
with a courthouse. Was that a design-based

di vista di confort visivo e dei materiali, non è
una scelta programmatica, bensi una scelta
progettuale.
Per quanto riguarda la ricerca di tutti i livelli di
“pacato comfort”, generalmente le risposte
progettuali sono un connubio fra richieste pro-
grammatiche contrattuali e scelte architettoni-
che ben precise.
Per esempio:
- da un punto di vista del comfort dell’illumina-
zione le richieste programmatiche erano: per
gli spazi della Salle des Pas Perdus 200lux al
suolo, per le aule di audienza 400 lux al suolo e
600 lux sui tavoli di lavoro, ma la scelta di dare
la temperatura di 3000°Kelvin alla luce artifi-
ciale è stata una scelta progettuale; per tutti i
corpi illuminanti abbiamo previsto dispositi-
vi tecnici antiabbaglio nei limiti delle richieste
programmatiche (UGR= Unified Glare Rating),
ma la scelta progettuale di avere degli ambienti
di tonalità uniformi, con le boiseries illuminate,
ha ridotto il rischio di abbagliamento dovuto ai
contrasti di tonalità di luce riflessa. Il comfort
dell’illuminazione è il risultato del connubio di
questi parametri.
-da un punto di vista del comfort acustico, ave-
vamo un riferimento programmatico nell’intel-
ligibilità richiesta per ogni spazio e ogni desti-
nazione funzionale; ma nei calcoli acustici (in
cui sono prese in considerazione la distribuzio-
ne delle superfici assorbenti), non sono rientra-
ti molti parametri, come per esempio tutte le
forme dello spazio architettonico e tutte le fini-
ture delle superfici e dei materiali (esempio l’in-
tonaco corrugato della Salle des Pas Perdus).
P.C. Insieme agli interni ad ‘alto grado di
comfort’ nel progetto del nuovo Tribunale
parigino si è scelto di aggiungere tre grandi
giardini pensili distribuiti su livelli differenti.
Pensate che per gli edifici terziari, pubblici e
privati, del vicino futuro il rapporto diretto tra

or programmatic decision you took whilst
developing the project?
S.M. The decision to approach the interior
design as a way of making the spaces plain and
welcoming by employing comfortable visuals
and materials was not a programmatic choice,
but rather a purely design-based one.
When you’re looking for a sense of “quiet
comfort”, generally you have to find a balance
between contractual requirements and well-
defined architectural choices.
For example, in terms of the lighting, we had
been asked to ensure 200 lux on the floor of
the Salle des Pas Perdus, 400 lux on the floor
of the hearing rooms and 600 lux on the work-
tops. However, the decision to go for 3000K
artificial light was purely design driven. For all
lighting, we included technical anti-glare devic-
es in compliance with requirements (Unified
Glare Rating (UGR)), but the design choice of
keeping a coherent colour scheme between
the various spaces, with the panelling lit up,
reduced the risk of glare due to contrast-
ing shades of reflected light. The comfortable
lighting scheme we created is the result of the
combination of both these considerations.
In terms of acoustic comfort, we had clear
requirements set out to us for each space
and function, but lots of things – such as the
shapes of the architectural space and all the
finishes of the surfaces and materials, like the
corrugated plaster in the Salle des Pas Perdus
– were not taken into account in the acoustic
calculations, which instead focused on the dis-
tribution of absorptive surfaces.
P.C. In addition to focusing on comfort for
the interiors of the new Paris Courthouse,
you also chose to add three large roof
gardens positioned on different storeys.
Do you think the inclusion of outdoor green
spaces is going to become a must in the near
future for all third-sector buildings, both

getto, oltre ad essere stata determinante per
vincere il concorso, ci ha dato la possibilità di
restare coerenti con la visione di un’architet-
tura umanista destinata ai suoi fruitori e quindi
di creare degli spazi esterni vasti, dove si puo’
variare la vista su orizzonti diversi, portando
dei vantaggi qualitativi di confort fsiologico che
scaturiscono poi anche in comfort psicologico.
Nel caso del Tribunale il tema del comfort dello
spazio lavorativo e dello spazio pubblico ci è
stato a cuore, in quanto coscienti delle difficoltà
presenti in questo contesto. Uno degli obiettivi
del nostro lavoro progettuale è stato di offrire

di magistrato ma in qualche modo li alleggerisce.

public and private, as a way of improving the
quality of the working day and creating more
inclusive, usable architecture?
S.M. As well as being a key factor in us win-
ning the contract, the idea of including terraces
in our design gave us the chance to stay true
to our vision of humanist, user-oriented archi-
tecture. It meant we could create vast outside
spaces where your gaze can be drawn in mul-
tiple directions, delivering positive results in
terms of physiological and therefore psycho-
logical wellbeing.
The theme of comfort in the workplace and in
public spaces was at the heart of our design
for the Courthouse – we were well aware of
the pressures associated with such a space.
One of our design objectives was to ensure the
spaces provided the best conditions for users
(i.e. in the Salle des Pas Perdus and hearing
rooms). We used the same approach for the
workspaces used by the magistrates, who fulfil
a civil responsibility every single day. Of course,
this doesn’t solve all the problems that magis-
trates routinely have to deal with, but to some
extent it makes them a little easier to bear.
Stefano Giorgio Marrano
Stefano Giorgio Marrano si è laureato in
architettura all’Università di Firenze. Ha
iniziato a collaborare con RPBW a Genova
nel 1998, lavorando sulla Banca Popolare
di Lodi. Si è successivamente trasferito a
Parigi nel 2000 e ha partecipato ai progetti
di Virgin e Cité Internationale di Lione (Salle
3000). Ha lavorato sul masterplan per
l’Area ex-Falck a Milano e al Centro
Culturale della Stavros Niarchos
Foundation di Atene. Dopo un periodo sul
progetto del Parlamento di Malta, dal 2011
al 2018 si dedica al progetto del Tribunale
di Grande Istanza di Parigi come
responsabile del progetto architettonico
interno. Nel 2014 diventa architetto
Associato e nel 2017 il Tribunale di Parigi
vince il premio dell’Equerre d’Argent. Si
occupa attualmente di diversi progetti a
Monaco.
Stefano Giorgio Marrano earned his
Architecture degree from the University of
Florence. He began collaborating with
RPBW in Genoa in 1998, working on the
Banca Popolare di Lodi project. He moved
to Paris in 2000 and contributed to
projects involving Virgin and Cité
Internationale in Lyon (Salle 3000). He
worked on the masterplan for the former
Falck area in Milan and the Cultural centre
of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation in
Athens. After a period spent working on a
project for the Maltese parliament, he
worked as the head of interior architecture
for the Paris Court of First Instance
between 2011 and 2018. In 2014, he
became an Associate Architect and in
2017 the Paris Courthouse won the
Équerre d’Argent award. He is currently
working on several projects in Monaco.

la sperimentazione e la ricerca

I diversi spazi nei quali si è
articolata l’esposizione hanno
messo in luce i trend attuali
del settore dell’ospitalità
internazionale e sono stati
realizzati da importanti gruppi
industriali italiani ed esteri.
Proprio per l’Outdoor Suite è
stata selezionata la serie Pietra di
Baugè colore Grigio nel formato
60x60cm che è stata posata a
pavimento. Nella Locker Room un
ambiente vivace ma allo stesso
tempo intimo è stata invece
utilizzata la collezione di grès
porcellanato Marmoker, colore
calacatta Grigio finitura lucida
nel formato 60x120 cm sempre
impiegata a pavimento. Due
situazioni diverse, due ambienti
sottoposti a “traffico” intenso che
confermano la qualità tecniche
ed estetiche delle collezioni
di Casalgrande Padana e
testimoniano, qualora ce ne fosse
ancora bisogno, l’indissolubile
legame tra l’azienda e il mondo
del progetto, di qualsiasi tipologia.

The floor of the Outdoor Suite
is made of 60x60cm tiles of
the Pietra di Baugè collection
in Grigio. The Locker Room is
a bright yet intimate setting
that features a floor made with
60x120 cm polished porcelain
stoneware tiles of the Marmoker
collection in the Calacatta Grigio
polished finish. Two different
situations, two “high-traffic”
settings that confirm yet again
the technical and aesthetic
qualities of the Casalgrande
Padana collections and the
company’s bond with the world of
design.

have found a place in the Hotel Regeneration exhibition curated by architect Simone Micheli at the

prestigiosa rivista di architettura
Casabella, da ormai novant’anni
protagonista del dibattito
culturale sui temi del progetto.
Al Grand Prix possono partecipare
tutti i progettisti (architetti,
ingegneri, designer, arredatori
di interni, studi tecnici privati o
pubblici, studi professionali di
architettura e decorazione di
interni ecc.) che hanno utilizzato

in qualsiasi tipo di applicazione
