1. FANFARE FOR A NEW THEATRE for two trumpets Igor Stravinsky was born near St. Petersburg, Russi in 1882. He died in New York in 1971. During hi lifetime he became one of the greatest innovators among twentieth century composers, notably in his handling of rhythm and orchestral colour. QUIET CITY Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1900, Aaron Copland is the composer who has had perhaps the greatest influence on the development of American AARON COPLAND Arranged by PETER WASTALL incidental music written a year earlier for a play of the same name. In Copland’s own words, the music reflects “the nostalgia and inner distress of a society music in the twentieth century. Quiet City, for trumpet, English horn and string orchestra, was composed in 1940 and premiered in New York on January 28th, 1941. SONATINA FOR SOLO TRUMPET - Peter Maxwell Davies was born in Manchester, Enfland, in 1934. He studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music and Manchester University. After ‘winning an Italian Government Scholarship in 1957, he studied with Goffredo Petrassi in Rome. Since 1970 he has devoted himself entirely to composition and now lives on a remote island in the Orkneys.
