The Rhythm of Job: The Book of Job Paraphrased and in Meter
()
About this ebook
Poetry appears in the Bible in numerous forms throughout both the Old and the New Testaments, from the book of Job and the psalms to the letters from Paul. Its use provides a heightened awareness of the message conveyed; it exposes depths of meaning that apply to each individuals inner murmurings and elevates the holy text to endless levels of perception.
In The Rhythm of Job, author Robert McFadden offers a unique presentation of the longest and oldest poem of the Old Testament, the book of Job, which explores humanitys struggle to understand suffering under the shadow of a loving God. McFadden seeks to illuminate the original cadence and parallelism of Job through the use of a side-by-side paraphrasing of the book as it appears in the King James Bible. In doing so, he creates a fresh rhythm while retelling this enduring story.
This poetic adaptation reveals the lessons from the book of Job in the form of an epic poem that both honors the original text and brings new life to this timeless tale.

Foreword
Job was a man who daily praised—and prayed to—the Almighty. He expressed his thankfulness for the blessings on his life and petitioned protection for his loved ones; such was the ease of his devotion. When things began to unwind, he continued to trust in his God and faltered not in his faith. Through devastation upon devastation, he remained faithful to the relationship he had fostered with the Almighty. With his herds now gone, his family destroyed, and his health taken, something eventually had to give. His continued steadfastness had reaped but a famine within his spirit. All he had left were unanswered questions and his petitions to God—his anguished plea to understand the calamity that had been wrought on him. The God he served so fervently had now abandoned him in his darkest hour. Surely he was due, at the very least, an explanation from the Holy of Holies.
The disputation between Job, his friends, his family, and his God is an agelessly relevant scenario. The lessons learned in this epic story speak to all peoples throughout the ages. While Job does not receive an answer to his entreating query, the story concisely yet indirectly wraps up the question, where is God in our suffering?
Here now is a paraphrasing of this treasured book of Job, presented with the original King James Version in a side-by-side format. The Rhythm of Job occupies the left column, while the original King James Version of the story is offered on the right. This side-by-side presentation allows for easy cross-reference throughout the book.
The Rhythm of Job is not intended to be another version of the biblical story but rather an alternative presentation of that story. The poem intentionally utilizes the original King James texts and purposely reflects the original character of the King James Version as much as possible, all the while retelling the story through the established meter. The fluidity of the verse readily conveys the emotion and energy of the original story.
May your joy be unfettered and your insights aroused as you begin your journey through The Rhythm of Job.
For my Mother, God’s loyal servant.
