The minimum size of microdots depends primarily on
the resolutions of the film on the dot is made. It is
also dependent on the resolutions of the lens system. using
Laboratorv microscopes andlor OPtical benches and sPecial
resolution film, it is possible to make microdots extremely
small. This is the system used by the Germans during IVorld
War II. It is not a nractical svstem from an onerational
standpoint because it requires that an agent have a microscope
in order to read the microdot. In addition, the need

Microdots are miniature photographs of illtelligence material, such as
pages of coded messages, photographs, and the like. These microdots are so tiny
(about .the size of the head of a pin) that they may be easily concealed under a
postage stamp, under the flap of an envelqpe, inserted.intoa slit in the corner of
a postal card, etc. This eruie of concealment and the resulting difficulty of -
detectiOn arel of course, the primary reasons for :their use in espionage work.
For m_any the best available approach to detecting such microdots has been
