Wet-spot on piston upper surface
ENGINE TYPE: K/L/S-MC/MC-C/ME-C
1. Introduction
Recently, on some main engines equipped with slide-type fuel
valves, wetted spots by fuel oil on piston top were observed, on
the occasion of checking cylinder condition through the
scavenging ports, at anchor
The same phenomena were reported as to the other B&W-type
engines with slide-type fuel valves.
Here, we would like to show the details of wet-spot formation,
for getting your good understandings
2. Details of wet-spot
1) Wet-spot condition on in-service engine
Photo-1 shows the wet-spot on the top surface of piston. This
photo ‘was taken through the scavenging ports, on one of
HZ-D&B make engines
As shown in Photo-1, wet-spot spread widely on the piston
top surface in all cylinders.
‘These wet-spot phenomena are observed only for the engines
in the pair use of slide-type fuel valve with oros-type
piston crown.
2) Oil leakage test on atomization device
A slide-type fuel valve was tested using atomization device
in our workshop for checking the possibility of oil leakage
through the atomizer.
The test fuel valve was left for 3-hours after one shot of
atomization. As the result, any oil leakage was not
observed. The same tests have been done by B&W using
slide-type fuel valves, which experienced wet-spots, and
reported as no oil leakage
3) Check of oil spreading using A-heavy fuel oil (oros-type
piston crown)
Oil spreading was checked how it flows, by putting 1cc of
A-heavy fuel, which is equivalent amount of atomizer
(inside suck part), on the top of piston crown of oros-type,
KBOMC-C. As a result, oil had spread widely as shown in
Photo-2. (In case of the original type piston crown, oil
flows to the center of piston.)

Conclusion
1) O11 leakage does not occur during engine stop, as fuel
oil passage in FOV (Fuel oil valve) to atomizer is closed
tightly by spindle, as confirmed in the above 2-2), oil
leakage test on atomization device
Wet-spot rarely appears in the case of original type fuel
valve, because, after engine is stopped, all fuel oil
remained in the atomizer drops from the spray holes on
the heated piston crown, and all oil is vaporized away.
2) Judging from the difference of circumstances around the FOV
between in-service engines and injection test at workshop,
as to the FO leakage from the atomizer of slide-type, it
can be considered that FOV has been influenced by pressure
variation around atomizer.
Fuel oil remained in atomizer is gradually sucked out
through the slide surface in the process of up-down motion
of piston during shaft turning. The sucked out fuel oil
will drop on the piston top, and finally wet-spot appears.
On the other hand, fuel oil could not be sucked out during
engine operation, because oil flow through the very narrow
clearance of slide surface makes it impossible to follow up
the rapid pressure variation.
In the case of original-type FOV, the fuel oil remained in
the atomizer flows out after every FO injection, and this
causes increase of unburned contents in the exhaust gas. This
phenomenon can be explained by the facts, in many cases of
exhaust gas analysis at shop test, the HC (Hydro Carbon)
level become higher for the original type FOV than slide-
type FOV.
However, the condition of FO drop varies depending on the
several factors such as time of turning work for checking
after engine stop, or engine size, so on, wet-spot does not
always appears.
3) Wet-spot has not been reported after shop trial or sea
trial
This can be explained that wet-spot is evaporated due to
higher volatility of A-heavy oil than that of C-heavy oil

4) As a conclusion, wet-spot is not caused by fuel oil leakage
due to malfunction of FOV, and it gives any harmful effects
on main engine performance because of its very small
quantity
However, if wet-spot is observed, then we recommend wiping
out them
