“I should imagine we will score at least 80 goals this season, and the way we
are playing at present I will be very disappointed if we don’t reach this target”.
The ange forecast. comes from
timmy nd the Latics manager is
naturally talking about his own team. His
conviction for such an estimate comes from
the early-season evidence provided by the
attack which amounts to 16 goals in six
{cague matches and five more in two League
Cup ties. “Added together it’ makes ‘the
Latics the most impressive goal-getting team
in the League alongside Fulham—at the
moment.
Confesses Jimmy: “It’s going very well at
this stage. 1 thought we would score a lot
of goals, but some of the gilt has been
taken away because I didn’t expect us to
concede as many as we have done.”
Eighty goals “is undoubtedly promotion
form. Only one team attained this height
among the successful sides in the Fourth
Division last season and Wrexham, placed
second, put 84 goals past opposing detences,
Champions Chesterfield made it on less77
goals, while Swansea City obtained 66 and
Port Vale whipped home 61.
Not many promoted teams have reaped
such an abundant harvest in recent times,
My record books ‘show that Doncaster
Rovers were the 1968-69 champions and they
did it on the strength of 65 goals, while
ax Town had the surprisingly "low
n of 53, with Rochdale collecting 68 and
Bradford City on the 65 mark
Luton Town were the table-toppers in
1967-68 with 83 scored; Stockport County
moved up in 1966-67 with 69 goals
OF course, hitting the net is only half the
secret to promotion. You've got to. stop
them going in at the other end, and since
we are on the subject of comparisons let's
look at the debit columns for the four pro-
moted teams. Chesterfield were very ‘effi-
sient in defence, leaking only 32 goals;
Wrexham conceded 49; Swansea were be
45 times and Port Vale had more sti
in stopping them than scoring em, They
let 33 past. We've clearly got some repair
work to do,
An 80-goal target SHOULD hit the jack-
Pot. Jimmy, however, is canny enough to
Put the brake on any runaway thoughts
about this season bringing a bonanza- to
Boundary Park. Yes, the present form could
send all the records shattering, but as Jimmy
points out: “Forward lines always hit a spell
when they are not scoring. This is when the
defence has to pull them through, and_this
is why it is my intention to work on making
re the defence is capable of doing so.
There are one or two things to improy
but I'm aware of the
‘I've said many times that our present
attack looks full “of goals. We have got
players running forward and attacking the
opposition and this is where we are scoring.
The two full backs are doing some effective
forward running which generally means that
we can rely on eight players going forward,
and so long as this purposeful running goes
on I think our chances of adding to’ the
account are good,
‘I'm sticking my neck out by forecasting
80 goals. But this is what T see at this
stage.” he went on
ghty goals could give Latics a lot of
es. It could put them in line for an
attractive prize in the Ford Sporting 1
which has been designed to reward teams for
their goal-getting ability and level of sports:
manship on the field. A club is awarded
Points for the goals scored and subtractions
are made from the total for recorded mis:
behaviour on the field, such as bookings or
a sending off,
And if the total didn’t Prove capable of
Teaching the promotion objective, ti would
surely put a club in the Watney Cup tourna-
ment, which has been conceived for the two
teams in each Division who notch most goals

Division One opposition.
So, while it matters vitally that the defen-
sive holes are plugged, let’s not forget that
80 goals can give the club and its players a
return in some shape or form for all the
effort expended.
It’s a few years since the team has got off
the ground with such impact. Eight games
this term have yielded 21 goals, but it took
18 games—until November Isi—to get so
many last season. And in 1968-69 you can
shudder at the thought that the team went
until January 25th, a total of 29 games,
before hitting their 21st of the season. In
19767-68 it required 18 games, to October
28th, to amass such a scoring tally in the
dit column.
The feet of our forwards are pointed in
the right direction,
KEEPING ‘the emphasis on attack, Latics
added 18-year-old Derek Spence to the
full-time staff within the last fortnight
Here’s another lad who has indicated in his
yearly-season trial games that he knows the
correct route to take with six goals in nine
reserve team matches, and he has formed a
formidable striking ‘partnership with Tan
Robins.
Derek is a former Irish youth inter-
national centre forward and while on duty
for the national team he netted three. times
in his three appearances. Recommended by
Irish contacts, Derek came over to Oldham
at the start of the season and began with the
Cheshire League side in their home match
with Buxton.
He maintained the scoring form displayed
in this match and was eventually offered
terms. Latics had to pay a substantial fee
to his Irish League club, Crusaders to seal
the deal. oognagt

sellers. I have made this appeal in the
previous two programme, but the response
has not yet been good enough to ease the
worries of club secretary Bernard Halford.
There was such a shortage of programme
sellers at the League cup-tie with Middles-
brought that many fans found the only way
to obtain t ue was to call at the
main oT: rely there are plenty of
young fans willing to help the club and
themselves. Bernard is waiting to see you

ATICS are to compete in a new county
competition for under-18 teams, Tt will
be the Li County F.A. Youth Cup
and will concern most of the clubs in the
area, ensuring some keen clashes.
It’s a good idea. | have always main-
tained that it is such a pity to spend time
and effort in banding together a prot
it in one suitable tournament, the F.A.
Youth Cup.
One bad result and the team is out of the
Cup, and there is no other competition to
enter in which the young lads can be kept
together, The Lancashire idea adds a little
more hope to the season and will guarantee
some additional experience for the under-18
players, It is planned to start the Cup later
in the season, and I hope to keep you in

which is a chilling thought if, like me,
you aren't yet ready to do any saving for
ihe presents. Latics have got the whole
thing in hand with their preparations.

details very shortly
TPHERE’S a hint about future develop-
ments from secretary Bernard Halford.
In his mysterious voice he informs me: “It
is my intention to organise a further fund-
raising scheme early in the New Year.” That
mind never stops ticking over, does it? But
he’s not giving clues away at this stage.

TODAY'S VISITORS
. . WORKINGTON
HE last five meetings which Latics have had with Workington have been quite
unrewarding. In 1967-68 hopes burned brightly after visiting the Borough
Park ground and earning a 1-1 draw in the opening round of the League Cup. The
optimism diminished when Workington managed the same score after visiting
Boundary for the replay, and so the game went to a third match, on a neutral
ground, at Carlisle and Workington stamped their passport to the next round with
aa 2-1 triumph.
Last season’s League encounters also went in favour of our rivals, who are
managed very astutely by BRIAN DOYLE. The first League meeting was at
Borough Park on August 23rd in front of 2,740 spectators, and Latics went down
by the only goal. The team on duty then was: Gordine; Bright, Wilson; Wood,
Lawson, Bowie: Blore, Colquhoun, Beardall, Bebbington, Chapman. Sub, Bingham.
For the return, on Boxing Day last year, the Latics team showed several
