About this ebook
Since the 19th century democracy has spread to more and more parts of the world. Nations that were formerly governed by narrow elites for their own benefit extended voting rights, education, welfare and social security to larger swaths of their populations. But over the last two decades, many political scientists have noted a reverse trend: growing economic inequality combined with the rise of autocratic leaders, weakening democratic institutions and weakening rule of law in country after country. So throughout the world, rulers, including elected rulers, are increasingly wielding power through corruption. They enact policies to enrich themselves and a small clique of their cronies. This also includes the Austrian political establishment in Vienna – namely the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), which is unwilling to implement any much-needed reforms in Austria; the SPÖ Party being a willing and guilty collaborator in perpetrating inequality, injustice and human rights violations. This includes the Mayor of Vienna Mr. Michael Ludwig; Vice Mayor of Vienna, Christoph Wiederkehr and Chairwoman Pamela Rendi-Wagner from the SPÖ Party. It should also be noted, that the current Viennese law concerning the guarantee of basic social health insurance and income – namely the "Wiener Mindestsicherungsgesetz" (WMG) – is outdated and ought to be changed. Also, the government in Vienna is handling the COVID-19 crisis very badly; not only failing to contain the corona crisis, but also escalating the health crisis even further – as recent mass protests and demonstrations in Vienna have proven. It should also be emphasized, that due to the coronavirus crisis and globalization – in particular increasing inequality, deindustrialisation and structural unemployment – it is imperative that lawmakers in Austria finally make an effort to guarantee fundamental human rights, by implementing a Basic Income Guarantee Law; as stipulated by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) – so that people can provide for themselves and their children, and are not penalised for upholding social distancing guidelines; which are essential so that COVID-19 can finally be overcome. Hence we call on all fellow global citizens to implement a revolution in the International Community; to overthrow the corrupt and oppressive establishment, so that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) can be manifested in the world.
