Chapter 1: What exactly is plant-based eating?
A plant-based diet is a method of eating that emphasizes the consumption of plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and seeds, while minimizing or completely avoiding the consumption of animal products such as meat, dairy products, and eggs.
When some people hear the term plant-based,
they may immediately think of a vegan diet. However, a vegan diet and a plant-based diet are not always the same thing. Consuming a diet centered on plants can entail a diverse array of nutritional options and does not necessarily mean omitting all forms of food that come from animals.
But why should you think about switching to a plant-based diet? To begin, there is a plethora of justifications! To begin, a diet that is primarily composed of plant foods has been associated with a reduced risk of developing chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Plant-based foods are typically very rich in a variety of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and fiber. These nutrients can help you feel fuller for longer and improve your health as a whole. Also, increasing your consumption of meals derived from plants may be healthy for the environment and may even assist you in lowering your personal carbon footprint.
Now, I'm not saying that you have to completely give up animal products overnight (unless that's what you want to do, in which case, go for it! ), but increasing the percentage of your diet that consists of plant-based foods can have a beneficial effect on both your health and the environment. Why not give it a shot and see if it helps you in any way?
In today's culture, the term plant-based nutrition
is becoming ever more commonplace. With the release of documentaries such as Game Changers, books such as Forks over Knives, and the development of athletes changing their nutrition to be plant-based, one cannot help but ask what the deal is with all of this. It's possible that everyone of us has a little different notion of what it means to eat a plant-based diet. Eating a plant-based diet means getting the majority of one's daily calories and nutrients from plant foods such as vegetables, fruits, herbs, nuts, and whole grains, and also including legumes and other plant-based foods in one's diet. You have access to a wide variety of possibilities for obtaining nutrients from plants.
