Everyone wants success, but not all can experience it. The difference lies in the plan of action. In the famous story of the race between the hare and the tortoise, the slower one won the competition. The same principle applies in real life. Being slow does not mean that we would be less likely to reach the finish line; it only means that we are taking the time to learn and strategize. After all, learning and educating oneself is a vital part of any success story. Commercial marketing has implanted a myth in people’s minds about failure and success. Marketing messages tend to tell us that there is always something missing – and that’s the reason we fail. However, instant success does not exist – there is no magic formula. Success is due to the compound effect.
The first chapter defines the so-called Compound Effect. Simply put, the Compound Effect is the accumulation of a series of small and smart choices we have made in life. We may feel that the micro-decisions were insignificant at the time, but in reality, the results are actually massive. The minute choices we make offer no immediate results and obviously no big wins, but with consistency, there will definitely be a radical difference in the long run. Many people are unwilling to believe in the Compound Effect because of several factors such as impatience and complacency. For the effect to payoff, we must be willing to exert more effort and patiently wait. On top of that, being too comfortable makes us lose the passion to move forward.
