Chapter 1: What is Pranayama?
Pranayama, also known as the science of breathing
and sometimes also referred to as heart of yoga
, comes from two words, prana and ayama. Prana means vitality and energy that is found in all of us and can also be termed as breath, Ayama on the other hand stands for stretching, directing, extending and regulating. Together, pranayama means direction, control and regulation of your breath. Did you know that you are only using 10% of your lung’s capacity?This causes lack of oxygen in your cells and makes you susceptible to various diseases such as heart problems, cancer, diabetes etc. Pranayama makes us capable of using our lungs to the optimum capacity. As a result, the cells in our body get the amount of oxygen that is required to function optimally.
History and Origin of Pranayama
Pranayama is an ancient art and a guided approach of controlling your breath. You practice pranayama in addition to Yoga poses. While yoga’s objective is to expand your body or physical structure, Pranayama is all about filling that space with not only fresh breath but also positive energy. This is why many experts even call it as the extension of your life force. The practice of Pranayama goes back to the origin of Hinduism in 483 BCE.
