    Frostwitch vs. the Ravages of Time

    Imoved stealthily along the upper gallery of the Greenview City Natural History Museum, keeping to the shadows. It was the middle of the night, so the museum had a lot of shadows cast by emergency lighting or the low glow of display lights. I was rather glad the lemmings case was covered, because I didn’t want to know what they smelled like. They looked a little moth-eaten.

    The shadows were a boon, because my superhero outfit was a very unstealthy silvery-grey. Kind of like the inside of a freezer storage bag. Only a little sparklier.

    The museum dated back to the late 1880s and had the strength and solidity of Victorian architecture: the gallery railing of Gothic trefoils was made of thick walnut, polished smooth from a century of trailing hands and a serious dose of Lemon Pledge. I stifled a sneeze.

    I could be over it and on the main floor in the space between heartbeats, if need be. Rappel down, line back in my tool belt a moment later, faster than you can say Frostwitch. Which is what they call me.

    It was a stupid moniker, but if you didn’t pick your own superhero name fast enough, the public would do it for you, and then you were stuck with it. I’d missed my window of opportunity years ago.

    There were worse possibilities, I suppose. Once Bad Penny had made a lewd comment comparing the shape of the icicles I could form and throw to the shape of a certain part of the male anatomy.
