Lao Tzu
Lao Tzu is the reputed founder of Taoism, but there is little evidence that he actually existed. He is said to have been a contemporary of Confucius and to have served as curator of the dynastic archives until retiring to the mythical K’un-lun mountains.

I - Delinea il tao
Il Tao che può essere detto
non è l'eterno Tao,
il nome che può essere nominato
non è l'eterno nome.
Senza nome è il principio
del Cielo e della Terra,
quando ha nome è la madre
delle diecimila creature.
Perciò chi non ha mai desideri
ne contempla l'arcano,
chi sempre desidera
ne contempla il termine.
Quei due hanno la stessa estrazione
anche se diverso nome
ed insieme sono detti mistero,
mistero del mistero,
porta di tutti gli arcani.
II - Nutrire la persona
Sotto il cielo tutti
sanno che il bello è bello,
di qui il brutto,
sanno che il bene è bene,
di qui il male.
È così che
essere e non-essere si danno nascita fra loro,
facile e difficile si danno compimento fra loro,
lungo e corto si danno misura fra loro,
alto e basso si fanno dislivello fra loro,
tono e nota si danno armonia fra loro,
prima e dopo si fanno seguito fra loro.
Per questo il santo
permane nel mestiere del non agire
e attua l'insegnamento non detto.
Le diecimila creature sorgono
ed egli non le rifiuta
le fa vivere ma non le considera come sue,
opera ma nulla si aspetta.
Compiuta l'opera egli non rimane
e proprio perché non rimane
non gli vien tolto.
III - Tenere tranquillo il popolo
Non esaltare i più capaci
fa sì che il popolo non contenda,
non pregiare i beni che con difficoltà s'ottengono
fa sì che il popolo non diventi ladro,
non ostentare ciò che può desiderarsi
fa sì che il cuore del popolo non si turbi.
Per questo il governo del santo
svuota il cuore al popolo
e ne riempie il ventre,
ne infiacchisce
