    FOREWORD

    I’m indeed very happy to present Engineering Chemistry Hand Book for Engineers.

    Chemistry is the branch of science that deals with the study of matter, its composition, physical and chemical properties and applications. It is important for Engineers to have knowledge of Chemistry as those may face problems in fields as diverse as design and development of new materials, quality control and environmental engineering that are basically Chemistry oriented in nature.

    Chemistry is the backbone in designing and understanding the nature of various engineering materials. Many advances in Engineering and Technology either produce a Chemical demand like polymers, chemical developments for their application in powder metallurgy and alloys, preventing methods of pollution etc. Currently Electronics and Computer field require biopolymers and nano materials. Electrical Engineers require proper conducting materials. Mechanical engineers are in search of micro fluids and civil engineers are looking for environment friendly materials.

    This book in Engineering chemistry is prepared for the students studying I Year in Engineering and Technology in Karnataka. This book is written in simple and easily understandable manner, it’s not a text book rather it’s a hand book where in it will help students to understand better, prepare better for their exams & score well. Tabular columns, figures are given wherever necessary. No matter what your students’ goals are, this book will help them to learn the basics of chemistry as per VTU.

    I acknowledge this book to my parents who are the backbone & main inspiration for me.

    Further suggestions and constructive criticisms for the improvement of this book are welcome.

    ELECTRO CHEMISTRY AND ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS

    Electro chemistry deals with inter play of electricity and chemical reactions particularly in solutions, it has wide applications to most practical surface phenomenon. Electro chemistry is the basis for the much of the scientific underlying such as batteries, electro chemistry, metallurgical process, fuel cells and other useful charge storage devices.

    Classification

    Electro chemicals cells are classified into galvanic and electrolytic cells.

    Single electrode potential : an electrochemical cell can be obtained by coupling two electrodes of metals having a difference in their standard electrode potentials.

    Therefore an electrode potential or single electrode potential of a metal is dependent on the metal to lose or gain electrons when it is in contact with its own ions.

    Standard electrode potential is the potential of the electrode measured at 298K and unit (1M) metal ion concentration.

    Free energy: The thermodynamic free energy is the amount of work that a thermodynamic system can perform. The concept is useful in the thermodynamics of chemical or thermal processes in engineering and science. The free energy is the internal energy of a system minus the amount of energy that cannot be used to perform work.

    Entropy : entropy is represented by the capital letter S, and it is a thermodynamic function that describes the randomness and disorder of molecules based on the number of different arrangements available to them in a given system or reaction.

    Derivation of Nernst equation :

    Nernst equation gives the relationship between the electrode potential concentration of the species and was derive by a well- known scientist Nernst, it was derived by taking well known thermodynamic considerations.

    Consider a reversible equation

    Mn++ ne-  M

    K= [Products]/ [Reactants]  = [M]/ [M n+]

    Decrease in free energy represents the maximum work done i.e, ΔG = -Wmax

    i.e., Wmax = nFE

    therefore ΔG = - nFE

    ΔGo = - nFEo

    The decrease in free energy is given by Vant hoffs reaction isotherm.

    ΔG = ΔGO + RT ln k—————-—1

    ΔG = Gibbs free energy

    ΔGo = Standard Gibbs free energy

    R = Gas constant

    T = Temperature

    k = equilibrium constant

    Substituting for ΔG,  ΔGo  & K values in equation 1
