A low wall of dark volcanic rocks in the near distance was the signal: our short, gentle walk past fields of daisies, beans and potatoes was drawing to a close, and we were about to enter Volcanoes National Park. Rising steeply into the middle distance were dense, dark stands of bamboo. Beyond, higher still, were the misty upper reaches of one of Africa’s most precious forest habitats.
