The truth must be told about informal settlements

ON OCTOBER 12, a reign of terror was unleashed by angry protesters mainly from the nearby informal settlement in Reservoir Hills/Clare Estate, Durban. The protests were seemingly sparked by the disconnection of electricity and a lack of services in the overcrowded encampment.

The scenes that were shared through frantic social media posts and reports gripped the formal sector, comprising of mostly Indian South Africans, in fear.

The looting of Indian-owned shops, attacks on innocent bystanders, burning of vehicles and tyres, and destruction of private property were reminiscent of events that took place in the 1949 riots.
