    Temple of Medinet Habu

The 20th dynasty began after the end of the 19th dynasty that lapsed in a form of power struggles after the death of Merneptah. This started with Mereneptah’s sons, Seti II and Amenmesse playing a push and pull game, to determine who the legitimate ruler was. Merneptash’s son Seti II is believed to have been the legitimate heir, only to be usurped by Amenmesses and upon feeling that he was robbed, staged a rebellion which saw him being forced to rebel to upper Egypt where he got accepted as a legitimate leader and ruled from Nubia. Upon the death of the two brothers, Seti II and Amenmesses, some foreign forces had started taking control of the country as there was a man who had a Hittite origin named Bay who is believed to have placed Siptah as the heir to the throne. By the time Siptah ascended to power he was too young to rule by himself and thus queen Tausret acted as his regent until his death. Tausret was the widow to Seti II and since she didn't want to lose relevance and thus found herself way back to power. Siptah was only able to reign for approximately three years and since Tausert was his coregent took up the throne to become the last pharaoh of the 19th dynasty. There is a theory that the Hittites participated in the chaos that was encroaching in Ancient Egypt considering the role Bay played in this power struggles. This marked the end of the 19th dynasty and the beginning of the 20th dynasty.

This kind of usurping that was witnessed at the end of the 19th dynasty shows how some of the Egyptians had started disregarding the Egyptians succession tradition. This was in all means against the slogan of ma’at, which meant harmony and balance and there is no way that this usurping would be allowed to continue in the 20th dynasty. The 20th dynasty started under king Setnakhte, who is believed to have been a child of one of the Ramesses II’s children. He is believed to have usurped the throne from Tausert in a time that Egypt had grown to a state of unrest and almost ungovernable and brought it back to life. Upon rising to the throne his main intentions and purpose were to stabilize the government although he was not good at record-keeping, thus his reign is patchy. One of his main challenges just as it was the story in the 18th dynasty was to deal with the sea people, but for him is believed he was able to push them away. He was later succeeded by a man who was known as Ramesses III who was as well inherited the problem of the sea people from his predecessor but for him, he was able to deal with this problem once and for all such that he pushed them as far as the Egyptian coast. He mainly utilized the weak point that was created by his predecessor to deal with the sea people.

It is believed that Ramesses III was the last king who can be considered to have been strong in the New Kingdom era. Even though it is believed that he was a strong leader, it is during his time that the problems that were faced during the 20th dynasty began. During this time, the priests of Amun started gaining power and influence to a position that they had to make big decisions in the future of the country. The priest of Amun rose to have so much control and was able to revive the old religion but they slowly drew revenue away from the government of the day. This seemed like the dark days of Akhenaten, where the priest almost controlled everything in Ancient Egypt, most of the land belonged to him and thus commanded on how the land would be utilized. For some, they rented the land while others were his employees, and the conditions of working and payment were in everyday deteriorating and the economic conditions worsening. This went from bad to worse promoting violence among the farmers who were being paid poorly while others were being overtaxed and the problem grew strong and stronger all through the 20th dynasty.

As these problems continued to pile, the economic conditions of the country continued to deteriorate. When it came to the reign of Ramesses III, things had gone so bad to a point where an estate such as Amun, only managed to be awarded a fifth of what they used to get during Thutmose III’s reign. This decline in economic condition affected most of the sectors in the country including the masonry sector. There came a point where the government was so inefficient that they were not even able to deliver grains to the workers in time who ended up demonstrating and thus strikes. This was the first time that strike was witnessed in the history of ancient Egypt. This form of dissatisfaction and demonstrations were witnessed in a good part of the 20th dynasty, inherited from one pharaoh to the other.

The economic situation and civil unrest in the country were not enough, there was even attempted murder to the king. In the royal harem, there was a queen in the reign of Ramesses III that was eying to promote his son to the pharaoh position, and thus the only way she would do that is by murdering Ramesses III, this was known as Harem Conspiracy. It is however worth noting that this was a plot that had other interested parties such as government officials, harem personnel, as well as some army officers. She was however captured and she was sentenced to a death sentence.

Ramesses III was good at what he was doing but slowly by slowly the country was slipping away from his control. An example of weakness showed in the priestly line since the priest Amun had placed himself as the intermediary of the gods and thus the office of the pharaoh did not own the respect they did previously. The assassination attempts by his younger wife left him wounded and it is from these injuries that he electuary died. After his death, Ramesses IV who was his brother rose to the throne. He came to power at a time that Egypt was crumbling and trying to get back on its feet. He thus tried to
