INTRODUCTION - STARTING THE CHANGE
In this first introductory lesson, I wish to provide for you, my reader, a fuller and deeper appreciation of the awesome power of human thought and belief. In doing so, we will start to unlock certain doorways of your mind, allowing the light of understanding to flood into your thinking self, awakening those tremendous powers which you will use to alter your whole life, if you so desire.
Together, we are going to set in motion a sea-change which will ultimately bring you success in any project or goal which you wish to achieve: a new job, a happy family, money, a loving relationship, better health and so on according to your personal circumstances and your personality.
And I can tell you confidently that age is no barrier to success, whether young or old you can have the things that you want by following the methods and using the techniques in this course. Nor do you need to be highly intelligent or an academic type. Ordinary people from all walks of life, men and women, young and old, married or single, city dwellers, townspeople or country folk, all can take advantage of this unique opportunity.
I wish at this stage to state for you a very important belief. It is, simply, that you are no less entitled than anyone else - be they King or Queen, President or Academic, Millionaire or Landowner - to the good things of life, to making the fullest and most positive use of the inborn powers of your mind. It is no less than your heritage and birthright as a human being.
You will find little in these lessons to be difficult of understanding. Many things are based on solid common sense and your knowledge of people and the world acquired in your lifetime. And there are no examinations or tests. You yourself will be the judge of your progress.
The fundamental purpose of this unique course is to help and encourage you on the roads of self-discovery, personal development and success in life. I should add, that the ideas which I will unfold and describe to you in the course of these lessons are in no sense original to myself, my personal property created, as it were, from out of nothing. They are, instead, the product of countless generations of humanity, stretching back over thousands of years.
Many of the ideas and beliefs have been described before in all the great religions of the world and by philosophers old and new. Poets and artists, scientists and engineers alike have all testified, each in their own way, to the marvellous powers of the human mind.
As for myself, I have studied many systems of thought, philosophies and religions, and I would like to share with you some of the pearls of wisdom which lie within such works. I seem to have always had a natural inclination towards such things. I am from an ordinary background, born and raised in what was a traditional Lancashire mill town, a child of the war years. I left school at 15 years of age with no qualifications. Only as a mature student in my later twenties did I begin to attend more formal courses of study. Since then, I have gone on to degrees in philosophy, history, electronics and electrical engineering from leading English universities. I have had text books published on computers and electronics, in addition to various research papers. My last text book was published by Cambridge University Press, one of the world's oldest and most prestigious publishing houses.
Over a 25 year period I taught in colleges, polytechnics and universities both in Britain and overseas. In a voluntary role, I also advised and helped many men and women enabling them to improve their lives. Now retired, but still busy, I manage and operate a self-publishing business for printed books and eBooks: http://www.rossendalebooks.co.uk.
I would like to offer through this course a chance for my readers to turn their life around and make of their life something to be proud of in whatever field they wish to succeed.
The first point I wish to get across strongly to you in this introduction is that everything in your life begins and ends inside you, in your mind. Sort out your ideas and thoughts and the world will be yours.
For those who seek happiness, the place to start is within. For those who seek money and riches, it is the same starting place. If you want better health, begin with the inner. Whatever your desires, you must start from within, as we all must do - it’s just the way that we are, the way we have been made.
In later lessons, I will provide you with certain methods and techniques which have been well-proven in the past to work effectively in exploiting the tremendous and phenomenal stores of energy and support which are within you, just waiting to be used. In a sense, you can view these techniques as keys which will unlock the secrets of success for you.
‘Success’, now there is a word which is loaded with so many different thoughts according to different people. Some view success in terms of money, promotion, getting a new job, having a happy family, good health or a loving relationship. Our later lessons will focus on ways of achieving success, reliable, practical and dependable methods for achievement. After this introduction we must begin our study of thought itself - something of which we are so familiar as, every day, our minds race with thousands upon thousands of them, and yet of which we have so little appreciation as to their true nature, extent and power.
And make no mistake about the importance of thought, according to the Buddha:
All that we are, is the result of what we have thought.
The Bible says:
As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.
Clearly, we are on the threshold of examining a profound force in the world and in our lives.
I have one final set of comments to make before we start our studies in detail. Allow yourself a few moments now in which to compose yourself mentally. Choose a quiet place in which you will not be disturbed as you work your way through these lessons.
LESSON ONE - THE REALITY & POWER OF THOUGHTS
Now that you are comfortable and at ease, let us begin our studies. Open your eyes. Look carefully around you. If you are in a room, what do you see?
Are there curtains at a window, maybe with nets or blinds? What kind of fireplace is in the room, if any? On the floor there may be carpets or rugs. On the walls, wallpaper, skirting boards and maybe picture rails meet your eyes. From the ceiling an electric light may hang down, suspended at the end of electrical wires. A switch is on the wall to put the light on and off. Various articles of furniture will be placed around your room, such as tables, chairs, settees and such like depending on the room and on your tastes and inclinations.
If you are sitting near a window or are outside the house, you will see the walls of other houses with their windows, rain spouts and roof guttering, doors and fences and walls, roofs of slate or tile, chimney pots and television aerials, greenhouses or garden sheds.
Whatever your surroundings, whether rich and sumptuous or simple and bare, study them carefully for a few moments. Everywhere you look you will find your gaze resting upon objects which have been created, at some time in the past, by men and women.
And what, at first sight, could be more real than such objects? You can see them with your eyes, touch them with your hands, they are just there - out there in the three- dimensional world with which we are so familiar, taking up space and existing there in time. What could be more real than these objects at which you are now looking?
