Section I Introduction
Chapter 1- The language used in Healthcare
Doctors and nurses use several different levels of language when communicating with patients and when talking with other colleagues. There are two main levels of language that are used. These are:
Everyday expressions
Every day expressions are used for parts of the body or for diseases or conditions when speaking to a lay person. Everyday expressions tend to come from Old English words and are often simple words. Many of the everyday names for parts of the body come from Old English. For example, arm, elbow, shoulder, hand, foot. There are everyday terms for some commonly occurring diseases as well, e.g. heartburn, toothache and foot drop.
Medical terms
Medical terms are often derived from Ancient Greek or Latin as the Ancient Greeks and Romans took a great interest in the human body. Medical terms that are derived from Greek often describe diseases or conditions while words derived from Latin often describe the functions of a body part and may also be used as an adjective form. Medical terminology is more common in written texts but may also be used when healthcare workers speak with colleagues.
Because of the background of the words that are used to describe the body and related diseases or conditions, each body part may have three word roots or base words to describe it. For example, the three base words that are used to describe the 'mouth' are:

There is a certain amount of memorising which is necessary in a medical English course. Memorising refers to the process of getting information, storing it in the memory and retrieving it later when needed. There are three stages in memorising and retaining information.
Stage 1. The sensory memory
Sensory information is taken in from the environment using your senses - sight, touch, hearing and smell. They are stored for a very short time, usually only a few seconds. Not all of the information is worked on in the brain i.e. thought about. Imagine yourself walking down a street. All the information that you sense goes into your sensory memory. For example, you see some flowers in the garden of number 16 which you’d like to plant in your own garden. This information is important to you and you are consciously thinking about it so it will then move to your.....
Stage 2. Short-term or
