20180626_195003The Trip
In the summer of 2017, we decided that 2018 would be the year for the trip of a lifetime. We (Nancy and I) decided to drive out to Yukon and visit one of the last Frontiers in Canada.
It didn't take much encouragement from me as Nancy likes to travel as much as I do. However, she wasn't too interested on visiting Yukon, but she agreed since she knew how much I wanted to visit Whitehorse. As a teenager, I had read Pierre Burton's book Klondike: The Last Great Gold Rush and ever since I've wanted to see Yukon and visit some of the places mentioned in his book. It wasn't until well into our trip that Nancy realized that Yukon was an amazing place to visit.
Early-stage planning started with a Google search that showed the fastest route from London, Ontario to Whitehorse, Yukon would be 5289 km (3286 m). Round trip, (with some side excursions) would be approximately 12000 km or (7456 miles). Certainly doable in the five weeks I allotted for the trip. I calculated two weeks to get to Whitehorse, one week in Whitehorse, and another two weeks to return home. That was the plan. Plans do change, however, once the REAL planning begins.
Our final route took us into the United States to South Dakota before heading north to Yukon. Once in Yukon, a trip into Alaska was scheduled. Our return trip saw us travel through northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario before arriving home. Our final mileage was way over the original estimate coming in at 17136 km or 10647 miles. Our original five weeks ended up being two days shy of seven weeks. Forty seven nights on the road, and we would not trade in any of them. The closer we got to Winnipeg, Manitoba on the journey home, the more we both felt that we could stay out another six months if it wasn't for family and work commitments.
The pages that follow chronicle our adventure. I hope you enjoy it to the extent that you start planning your own trip.
Day 1 - June 1st 2018 - 621 km
Our belief is that you should enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Making the journey as interesting as possible helps to take the monotony out of the trip. Since we were planning on being away for such a long time, it was important to break up the trip with interesting things to do and see along the way. First stop, Gary Indiana. We stayed in Gary not because of Gary, but because it was a great location to get us to the next day, for we had made some plans. (More on that later). Enjoying the journey means that we strive to take the backroads as much as possible. The backroads have more interesting sights and help us to travel stress-free as much as possible.
We loaded up our Toyota Matrix and left at 10 o'clock. I wanted to leave earlier, but as most husbands know, getting the ladies to be ready and leave on time is one of life's greatest challenges.
Crossing the border into the United States was uneventful. Being friendly, courteous and polite always makes dealing with border guards a lot easier. Our first stop was for gas in Port Huron, Michigan. Even with the exchange rate (which was about 34%) gas is so much cheaper than in our home province of Ontario. Prior to leaving London the price of gas was $1.259/litre. This works out to approximately $4.766 per US gallon. Fuelling up in Port Huron at $2.969/gal and adding the exchange rate, worked out to approximately 1.02/litre. Deciding to drive west through the United States would end up saving us more money than if we drove through Canada. (From this point on in the story all dollar figures quoted will be in Canadian dollars with the appropriate exchange rate if any.)
Throughout my time traveling the backroads, I have seen many farms. I have seen farms for horses, chickens, cows, pigs, and sheep, and I have even seen alpaca farms, deer, and elk farms as well as bison farms, but I had never seen a donkey farm until driving the backroads of Michigan. We saw a truck from a donkey farm pulling a trailer full of donkeys. For some reason Nancy thought I
was an ass for hee-hawing to the donkeys. I was just trying to be friendly and say hello.
We also stopped at an estate sale. Why? I have no idea! It's not like we had a lot of room in the car to buy anything. (A stop in Montana proved me right, but more on that later.)
Our first day on the road was complete and we settled into the first of many hotels. We drove 621 km, which as it turned out, was a little more than the average daily drive. We were gone for 47 days, but actually only drove 32 days.
Day 2 - June 2nd 2018 - 284 km
Day two was to be one of the days on the trip that I was really looking forward to. On day two I was going to scratch off another item from my bucket list. Whitehorse has been on my bucket list before there was such a thing. Our stop for this day, a mere 284 km away, was LeClaire, Iowa (population 3974) nestled along the Mississippi River.
Nancy and I are fans of the History Channel show American Pickers
. We visited their Nashville store on a previous adventure and now we were to visit their main location, Antique Archaeology. It is really cool to watch a TV show like that one and walk into their store and see some of the items they bought during the episodes we saw. Definitely worth visiting and crossing off my bucket list.
After visiting Antique Archaeology we took a walk along the mighty Mississip
. At LeClaire, the Mississippi River is almost 1 km wide. Nancy had never seen the Mississippi and was quite impressed with its size.
