Torpedoed southeast of Cape Agulhas by U-506 (Würdemann) on March 9-1943, position 38 30S 23 10E, while on a voyage from Aden to Cape Town in ballast. The torpedo detonated in the tunnel in No. 4 hold and set the engine room on fire. 1 man was killed there, while another engineer managed to get up on deck but was very seriously burnt all over his body. 1 man in the tunnel was blown aft by the force of the explosion and was able to climb up the ladder. The survivors were able to get in the lifeboats before the 2nd torpedo hit in the engine room (half an hour after the first one), but when Tabor still didn’t sink the U-boat started shelling her until she finally sank 2 hours later (09:00 is given in Nortraships flåte
).
Several of the men were injured and were taken care of as best they could, but the engineer died quietly the first night and was buried in the sea the next day. The 4 boats encountered stormy weather and high seas, so that 1 of them lost contact with the others. On March 17, 2 boats with 22 on board arrived Still Bay, while the 3rd arrived Gaans Bay the next day with 10 survivors. The men in the 4th boat had seen land on the morning of March 19, but that same day their boat overturned, and though all 12 had managed to get back in they were unable to keep the water out of it. They tried to row towards land, but in the cold water they eventually gave up and at 3 o’clock that afternoon 1 of them died; by 6 o’clock 10 were gone. The sea washed 6 of the bodies overboard, while the 2 survivors desperately tried to reach land, until they only 20 meters from shore encountered a coral reef stretching as far as they could see in both directions. Too exhausted to row around it, they took the risk of heading straight for it and were thrown across by the seas. They broke into an empty house they found where they slept till the next morning, when they met some soldiers who helped them get to Bredasdorp where they were given medical care. 12 had died, 34 had survived.

Leave Bredasdorp on the R319 towards Swellendam. After 6km you will arrive at Karsrivier. Turn right on this road which is signposted for Malgas. Make a note of the kilometers at this point and drive for a further 9.4 kilometers. There is a ‘T’ junction marked Tweevlei to the left and Soutpansvlakte/Blom to the right. Turn right and follow this road for 1.2 kilometers, turn left and the Farm is on the hill. The cemetery is past the farmhouse in a valley. It needs to be noted that there are several farms in the area by the name of Soutpansvlakte, and it seems as if they are all owned by various members of the Blom family..
