Introduction
I never considered myself a martini girl
—quite the opposite. I really didn’t drink much at all until my children were almost grown. I spent my children’s growing-up years as a nondrinker. I truly couldn’t afford it. I was too busy buying necessary things, like toothpaste, cleats, and book bags.
As a child of a beer lover, I never found alcohol to be too important, and I surely, to this day, find the smell and taste of beer off-putting. Yes, my beer-enjoying friends, I have tried it but to no success. I certainly could be called naïve about wine, but I’m learning.
I really like experimenting with the science of a cocktail though. I find I have a certain curiosity (or desire for a challenge) in creating a cocktail. I take such pleasure in the ceremony, the mere act of making an evening cocktail. It seems to put an exclamation point on the day just spent. Relax—the day is through!
The process for writing this book has been sometimes very simple. Many of the ingredients used were from my own garden or
