    Vero Beach in Florida is a real discovery. Just staying in the hotel you can enjoy the best massage and food in Florida, then add in an unspoilt beach full of turtle nests, a shipwreck, (sharks!), an old fashioned but cosmopolitan main street and even a labyrinth nearby and it is an exceptional escape. They really look after me here, especially the main chef, who, although he is from Peru, brings Cuba to Vero Beach. It makes my mouth water just to think of it. Bring your appetite.

    I used to get extremely burned out in my old job and couldn't even handle finding and booking a hotel and flight or finding what to do when I did take time off. So, I thought "wouldn't it be awesome if someone would write a guide that just gave you one perfect escape; the perfect hotel, spa, flight and restaurant."

    So that's what I did.

      Introduction

      Hi there, I'm Pearl Howie (aka Pearl Escapes) and this is my guide to Vero Beach in Florida – a real discovery.  Even if I just stayed in the hotel I would have been enjoying the best of Florida – the room, hot tub, toiletries, spa, massage, restaurant, pool attendants, view, but add in an exceptionally unspoilt beach full of turtle nests, a shipwreck (sharks!), an old fashioned but cosmopolitan main street within walking distance and even a labyrinth a few miles away and it really is an exceptional place to escape to.  It was my last stop on my Florida road trip in 2013 and blew me away so much that it became my after-Convention rest in both 2014 and 2015, and I'm not usually one to go back to the same hotel as I love to try new things.  They really look after me here, especially the main chef, who, although he is from Peru, brings Cuba to Vero Beach.  It makes my mouth water just to think of it.  Bring your appetite.

      I have been so blessed to visit so many incredible places around the world and experience healing masters at work and I'd very much like to share that wisdom with you.  (And remember, as the Chinese say, food is medicine.)

      Vero Beach Escape

      All I really knew about Vero Beach was that the hotel here is owned by Gloria Estefan and sea turtles nest here; between that, the website and Tripadvisor I knew that whatever happened I would have a good few days but I was a little nervous as to whether the neighbourhood would be like my Naples Stepford moment.

      As I drove up the east coast of Florida I also noticed many neighbourhoods seem segregated – either by colour or by age.  Stopping into an Applebees every single other patron was white and aged 70-80 which kind of freaked me out.  I teach older people but we still have classes mixed by age and ethnicity and I love that many of the centres I teach in allow older people to mix with young families sharing their wisdom and creating a real community vibe.  (Mind you most of my students act and dress more like teenagers.)

      I needn't have worried, Vero Beach is a vibrant community, and the hotel was full of guests of all ages and ethnicities, which made me feel right at home.
