Stenocereus - Daniel Zimmermann
Stenocereus
By Daniel Zimmermann
The Genus Stenocereus
Etymology
The ancient Greek word stenós means narrrow.
How does this apply to the genus Stenocereus? At least some species are tall cylindrical plants, and the cylinders look narrow to me. However, this is not the reason why botanists apply this Greek word to the genus that we are studying.
-
According to CactiGuide, this Greek prefix tells us that most Stenocereus species have narrow ribs.
-
Why are the ribs narrow? Only their Creator knows why He made them this way. However, if you permit me to indulge in a little speculation, CactiGuide informs us that plants of this genus often have numerous ribs.
Since there are a lot of ribs running lengthwise
