    Chapter 1: My Journey

My first experience with debilitating anxiety occurred many years ago. I was a single working mother of two young boys living a normal life in London when I began experiencing several frightening symptoms including heart palpitations, shortness of breath, and insomnia. The symptoms seemed to come out of nowhere.

A doctor conducted a wide range of tests and concluded there was nothing physically wrong with me. Still, I was increasingly anxious and fearful. After several months, I decided to go to the United States where I saw several doctors, including a cardiologist, who told me the same thing: All the tests came back normal; my heart was healthy. I returned to London anxious, confused, and afraid. It was more than a year after my initial symptoms, and I had no answers and nowhere to turn for help.

Shortly after arriving home, I got very sick. My heart rate accelerated, my chest was tight, I was having a hard time breathing, my left arm was numb, and I felt a tingling up and down my legs. I called the paramedics. As they checked me out, they asked me a few questions, then told me I was having a panic attack.

That only increased my confusion. I was healthy and didn’t have any unusual stress in my life. There was no reason for me to feel panicked and, besides, how can a panic attack do all that? I was sure it had to be something more serious, but what?

My symptoms subsided, and the paramedics left. After a while, the symptoms returned. I didn’t want to call the paramedics again, but I was terrified. I was so afraid I was going to die that I wrote a letter to my kids so they would know what to do if they found me dead.

I made it through that awful night. The next day, I felt like I’d been given a second chance—and I realized it was going to be up to me to figure out what was going on. My search began with a book on natural remedies that I had bought a few years before. The book listed conditions alphabetically. It didn’t take me long to reach the word anxiety. I only had to read a little further to realize that’s what I had. With that understanding, it seemed possible that I would finally find some answers.

My research revealed that I was doing some of the things that can cause or exacerbate anxiety, including consuming too much caffeine and not getting enough sleep. I began making changes, saw immediate results, and, in just a few days, my symptoms disappeared.

While that may sound like a happy ending, it wasn’t. There’s more to my story.

Life went on. I moved to the United States and got married. Seventeen years after my first anxiety attack, I had another one. The condition was back with a vengeance, more intense than before and accompanied by new symptoms. I was afraid to be alone and yet afraid to leave the house. Other new symptoms included dizziness, dry mouth, shakiness, cold chills, and a feverish sensation, yet I didn’t actually have a fever. Even though I knew it might be anxiety, I was confused by the additional symptoms and tried to push through it.

Then one day, while driving to work, I felt like I was losing control of everything. I didn’t want to hold the steering wheel, my arms were weak, and I felt incapacitated. My heart was pounding and racing, my chest was tight, my mouth was dry, and my arms and legs were tingling. I was able to stop my car safely and call 911. When the paramedics arrived, they checked me out and told me my blood pressure was perfect and I was fine. I went home, thinking that a day of rest was all I needed.

I was wrong. Things only got worse. In addition to the physical symptoms, I became afraid of so many things—irrational fears that caused me to stop working for nearly two years. Nightmares kept me from sleeping, light and bright colors bothered me, I couldn’t hold a conversation for longer than three minutes. I was easily tired and scared, I developed insomnia, and my muscles stayed tensed, which created intense muscle pain and constant dizziness. I was short of breath, I felt a lump in my throat, and my heart rate was constantly accelerated. The effects of anxiety consumed my life. Thank God for my husband, who not only stepped up to care for me but also everything else in our home while I searched for a solution.

    Gradually, through
