- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Lots of cute, colorful, and interesting designs to create. I love the way she steps you through the process with clear photos and directions. After reading this book, I’ve got a new craft to have fun with! It’s great for a beginner but I could imagine someone with a some experience using the included patterns and applying their own twist on the designs.
For folks who are new to this craft, the author is skilled at introducing new/additional techniques in a manner that builds on the basics she covers at the beginning of the book.
I highly recommend this book! Just realize that this is an addictive craft and you may be sucked into hours and hours of punch needle creations.

Introduction
When I first saw a punch needle rug hooking video, I was instantly hooked (pun intended!). Punch needle is a modern take on a traditional rug-making technique, with a tool that makes the process quick and easy. With just a few supplies—yarn, fabric, a frame, and a punch needle—you can create beautiful pieces like traditional rugs, home décor accents like wall hangings and cushions, even children’s toys!
While the technique itself is straightforward, the projects you can make are far from basic. You can use yarn in all kinds of color and texture to express your creativity and match your personal style. I hope you’ll use this book as a starting point to learn the technique and try your hand at some projects. Once you’ve mastered the process, experiment with your own designs and see what you can do!
How to Use this Book
If you’re completely new to punch needle, the Getting Started chapter will fill you in on the tools and materials you’ll need. Then, the Basic Techniques chapter will walk you through tutorials for stretching your fabric, punching, finishing, and more. You’ll even get to try your hand at a simple project. If you’re already familiar with punch needle, you can jump right to the projects. But the Getting Started and Basic Techniques chapters are always there if you need to remind yourself how to do something.
The projects increase in difficulty as you work your way through them, but don’t be intimidated! Each one has step-by-step instructions to walk you through the process, as well as helpful tips. In addition to the instructions, the patterns show you the sequence you’ll use to punch each design.

Tell us a little about yourself!
I’m a simple girl from a small European country called Slovakia. I’ve always been creative, but I didn’t realize how much I needed to create to be happy until about five years ago.
Tell us about your business.
When I was first learning about punch needle, there were no easily accessible kits on the market. As I was learning about all the supplies through a lot of trial and error, I came up with a really good set. So I made my first Punch Box, the monstera, and Myra and Jean was born. It was one of the best things that happened to me.
Why is your company called Myra and Jean?
Strangely, some of my best ideas hit me at night when I start falling asleep. That’s what happened with Myra and Jean. It was before there really was a business, but I knew it was the name I would use. People often tell me how they relate to the name—one person even told me her grandma’s name is Myra, and she has a sister named Jean! It feels like it was meant to be.
What are three words that describe you?
Passionate, caring, and quirky!
Where are you from?
A beautiful country in central Europe called Slovakia. I currently live in Seattle, WA, but I miss my home every day.
How is your art inspired by your heritage/homeland?
I think my heritage shows less in my art and more in my drive and persistence in business. I’ve always been a hard worker because of where I’m from and how I was brought up. Whenever I go home, I try to immerse myself in the local art culture to soak up inspiration. I made a punch needle kit with folklore designs that was hugely popular.
How did you get into punch needle?
In 2017, I lost my full-time corporate job. As I tried to process the loss and look for a new job, I turned to art. I’d been creative my whole life, but somehow, I didn’t realize how much art meant to me as a person. I started with calligraphy, then moved to watercolor, making custom vinyl stickers for mugs and woodburning. Then, out of nowhere, I saw a video on social media about punch needle, and it was one of those movie moments. I knew I had to try it!
What was the first punch needle project you made, and how did it turn out?
The first project had text in it—cursive at that! If you know punch needle, you know the finished design is a reverse of the pattern, so any patterns with text must be mirrored to turn out right. The pattern wasn’t the tough part, but the text certainly was! It’s not something I recommend for beginners, but it came out pretty well from what I can remember. This describes me perfectly, though, because I tend to pick the most challenging project when starting a new craft.
Why do you love punch needle?
It’s extremely relaxing, there’s really no way to mess up, and it allows for a huge variety for projects. Plus, did I mention I love texture? There’s nothing quite like finishing a project or a large part of one and feeling the softness of it. It’s fluffy, and I love that!
Punch needle has impacted my life like no other craft before—I’m a business owner because of it. It’s been one of the biggest challenges in my life, but I’m growing so much. I play with yarn for a living. I really can’t complain!
Do you have any advice for beginners?
Just go for it, and don’t overthink it. You’ll learn the most by going through the process yourself. It’s quite amazing.
