Dedication
To Joe, Frank, Ken and Emily who have come with me all the way…
And to God for bringing relevant people into my life who have taught me and challenged me to be faithful.
Preface
In my years as a Christian I have interacted with many people and have had different experiences as a result. People look fine until when you introduce the subject of God. They all know about him but no one talks on the subject yet there has never been a need to speak about God, Christ and salvation than in the present time. You might ask yourself how people are surviving yet silently dying to be close to God. But this is how they do it… by being busy and trying to forget God.
You know what… I am now introducing the subject. Souls can only be won when someone talks about God to those that God gives the opportunity to meet.
I don’t count myself to have apprehended but I have drafted this brief prose consisting of the things that I have learnt in my encounters with believers, non-believers as well as new believers.

Deuteronomy 8.18: But you shall remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that gives you power to get wealth that he may establish his covenant which he swore unto thy fathers, as it is this day. 19 And it shall be, if you do at all forget the LORD your God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish. 20 As the nations which the LORD destroys before your face, so shall you perish; because you would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God. (KJV2000)
A Corporate World
You did not lock the door of your car, you have to go back or find your car is gone; you woke up late this morning because the movie yesterday was very interesting; you are somehow annoyed that your salary was late in coming- and these days the government people are stealing money! Huh, the letters in the post office box were of unpaid bills and threats to cut the power to your house. The boss yesterday scolded you for coming late and spoiled your day. Someone is on the phone and is calling, by the time you get your phone he has already hanged and you have no credit to call back. You don’t know how you will convince him that you will pay him the coins he had loaned you and oh… you have to work for some extra cash for the weekend. Imagine last weekend was spent indoors because there was an urgent office task to be handled in on Monday and besides it was raining throughout… and this rain nowadays is spoiling my plans…
In a chaotic world, it is the order of events to wake up go to work, trick your way out of situations, be busy until the hours are done then move back mumbling how the government is putting up with corruption, impunity then flip the newspaper to find how an innocent person was murdered and justice was never met, watch the television; the news are not so bad, it’s only one police officer who has died this week, it seems crime is coming down… the shares are doing well in the market although there is no trend and your favourite team drew in their previous match. Then you have to set an alarm and jump onto the bed for the next day.
Unfortunately our lifestyles have taken the better of us. We have little time to reflect and meditate. Someone has taught people that you should control your life; you should work hard and live your life. You should wake up early and burn the midnight oil. But that formula falls short of a vital element that nullifies the whole function of the equation- remembering God.
We should remember our Maker. Just as going to job every day is vital for your income, updating yourself on current affairs, having a light hearted company of friends, it is equally important to devote time to realize that trees have green leaves, a flower has sprouted next to your door, that the sky is clear blue today, we had a violet sunset yesterday and in addition appreciate and give credence to their maker.
A Walk with God
Genesis 5.24: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him (KJV2000)
When a small boy is taking a walk with his father that is the moment when the heart is relaxed and full of joy. God desires that we walk with him day to day throughout our lives. However we are not able to walk with him because we don’t want to. We are big enough to walk our ways, we have issues to think and sort out, we have also learnt enough to lead ourselves - and that is the problem. The mess in this world today is because we want to lead ourselves. We want to go to school and learn then jump into the world and try to make things better but it shall never work unless we start walking with God. Humans for a long time have sought joy and satisfaction from various sources. All the inventions, all the learning, all the riches, all the achievements and heaps of work done, have left man a scrap of what he was supposed to be. True joy is a result of walking down the lane with God holding your small hand.
The bible records Enoch in a very precise but one of the most moving scripture of all times. 'He walked with God till he was no more because God took him away'. It is therefore possible to walk with God like Enoch did. In the days of Enoch evil had founded roots in the world. Man had an open rebellion against God. People sinned and followed their hearts full of evil and lust and kept a wide distance from God. Murder was as common as a lie, idolatry may have started then but here was a man who was walking with God.
Enoch was not living in a sanctuary or a temple; he lived among people and was able to walk with God despite the influence from his neighbours or friends. And God felt that he was going to give him an eternal favour, he took him away from them- and that is how God can be physical when he is pleased. That may have brought terror on them; they had thought that God had remained in the Garden of Eden only to find out that he had always been around.
God is spirit and walking with him is not a physical exercise. A small child walking with his father is a good physical example but walking with God is a far brilliant thing beyond comparison. It is spiritual to a great extent because we cannot see God. God is invisible and walking with him requires an optimist. A person who believes and hopes that God is with him and he is holding his hand is able to walk with God in a spiritual manner. Not many people will be able to do this because it is demanding. You cannot walk with God when you are rushing to sin and to please yourself and besides you have a blessed conscience that will turn red immediately when you have left God’s hand and have run for the lizards and grasshoppers in the bush.
The world today needs to be spiritual. It’s not about cars and houses but we should think of spiritual matters. God is spirit and cannot be able to walk with people who are not spiritual. Man is much more than a body- we are spiritual beings. There’s something beyond the biological brain and heart, beyond sleeping, walking and breathing. We are different from chicken and cows because we are spiritual beings. In the story of creation, God did breathe life into Adam- the same procedure had not been followed in creation of birds and antelopes.
The problem of spirituality did not start in this era but rather a long time ago. We have the sad story of Esau. It was the role of the father to bless his first born. But what are blessings when you cannot see them? Don’t you earn what you want by working hard and avoiding mistakes? But that is not the case. Esau was not spiritual; he placed low value on the things of God. Blessings to him half existed and halfway they did not- and why should they? Didn’t he eat and sleep every day? Would blessings change that? He knew that the blessings of a first born would not help him if he died. He gave them up for a bowl of broth. After eating and getting satisfied he never cared about them anymore. He had never experienced them and never cared.
The time when his father wanted to bless him, and when he was ready for the blessings he learnt that they had already gone. Gone? There had been something! For them to go they had been there after all! Though in tears he asked for them it was too late. That was a high cost to pay for lack of spiritual sense.
People need a strong spiritual awakening in order to walk with God. The price to pay for being so material oriented might be too high when someone realizes- oh! So there was God!
Joseph, the son of Jacob walked with God too. He suffered the cruelty of his brothers who sold him to Egypt as a slave. They would have killed him because they hated him so much but they realized he might fetch something if they sold him as a slave instead. But one thing they did not realize was that God was with him. They were good planners too, they knew their father might ask of him and conjured up a story that really worked. God did not stop Joseph from being sold but he kept him company. Later when Potiphar’s wife wanted to lead him into sin, Joseph showed how spiritual he was by running away and asking, How can I sin to God?
God was not a mere character in the theme of morality in the story of creation, but was real to him, as real as a chair or a table that you can see.
Walking with God can be taxing too. You have to live ‘holy’. Not many people would want that. It does not look promising either. It might lock out our friends, our hobbies, fun and end up making our lives flat. We would want to have every good thing, to enjoy life and to be free to do what we want. We don’t want to follow rules and spend our lives on toes. We want to break free go up into the sky. We have many lies in this world, some are effective in the short run, and some take time. Living ‘holy’ is a lie. There is nothing like living holy instead it is just ‘living’ because you had not been living before. When you had not started walking with God it is synonymous to say your life was dead. The bad thing about dead people is that they do not realize they are dead for the simple reason that they are dead. You start living when you realize that we have God who is willing to walk with you. When you start dropping useless weights that is when you start living, when you stop running in circles seeking satisfaction from places where it could possibly not be found that is when you start living. People are frightened by living holy, but I wish it could be possible because after all living holy in the literal sense in this world is impossible. Other lies follow in procession; we can’t be free by overlooking rules and going our way. Breaking free does not mean freedom. If we overlook the rules then everything will get spoilt because you cannot control something nor have fun if you don’t know the limits- you cannot drive a car so fast beyond what you can control- you will fall over. A simple exercise of replacing batteries to a gadget requires rules, placing the batteries the wrong way and it won’t work. Living within the rules brings fun and meaning in life. You will live on toes when you want to be free and not when you follow the rules.
The ancient Israel had a golden moment when God was walking with them in the wilderness. In day time he was represented by a cloud and at night he was represented by a pillar of fire. That was a dramatic walk because it had never happened before and it might never happen again. You might expect that they were the happiest and the most secure and content group but you are wrong. These travelers knew how to complain. They looked back at onions and garlic available back in Egypt and wished they were back. A small complaint would work miraculously in the camp and make all of them feel that God was unfair to them. When the Egyptian army had cornered them by the Red Sea these people complained to Moses. Probably they were afraid of the army and by showing open disgust with Moses the Egyptian army hopefully would have considered punishing Moses who had ‘incited’ them and that they were faithful slaves to the King of Egypt was it not for this Hebrew. This of course showed how spiritually weak they were.
Israel had been the chosen people of God and they did many mistakes on the way but we should not feel as if we are any better than them. They were a sample of how we could behave if God tried to be physical to us. We probably might not adore him but we might be busy limiting his ability, thinking of how he cannot see what is done in secret, thinking he cannot fight well, questioning his ability and power. But here is the precious chance of walking with him, without complaining or doubting his presence no matter how the circumstances and probably this is the most elegant chance of walking with your
