INTRODUCTION
Gabrielle (Gabi) Mazar and Marian Mitchell came together with the shared goal to show the world that living with autoimmune disease does not have to be limited, hard, or depriving. Living with autoimmune disease can be delicious, fun, and most importantly, much easier than people think.
Gabi is a Fascia-Stretch Certified personal trainer and an Arizona State University graduate with her Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies, with concentrations in Small Business and Exercise and Wellness. She is certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and Stretch to Win Fascia-Stretch Therapy (FST). Gabi has been a personal trainer since 2008 and is the founder of Healthy Body Works, Whole Body Solution. She believes that health and fitness should fit into your everyday routine and not just be a means to an end.
In 2012 Gabi was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. She is all too familiar with the frustration and struggle to not only get a diagnosis, but how to find balance in her daily life. She found the most important thing you can do is listen to your body. Autoimmune disease has many symptoms and is often misdiagnosed. The symptoms of autoimmune disease are many and often misdiagnosed. Before being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, Gabi had her thyroid tested twice and both tests showed normal levels. Placing all your eggs in one basket is a mistake we often make because we have been culturally conditioned to place unquestioned faith in the decisions of our doctors. Getting a second or even third opinion is always recommended. Once you are prescribed medication, take careful note of how you feel. We recommend keeping a journal for one to two weeks so that you recognize patterns in your eating habits and how they affect your energy, mental clarity, and how you feel physically. It is a process to get on the right medications and to find the right dosage.
This process takes time. Since her diagnosis Gabi is still figuring out her disease; however, she has made a profound effort to pay attention to what types of exercise works for her and how her body reacts to certain food. She has struggled with weight gain and eating habits - just as many of us do - and the many modifications of medication(s). These recipes were put together to help others with autoimmune disease find a new love for food.
Today, Gabi has the energy to make it through the day and no longer suffers from extreme exhaustion and fatigue, joint pain, depression, and bloating. She has found a diet that is satisfying instead of depriving and workouts that are supportive of her autoimmune disease. She wants the same for you!
Marian is a Certified Health Coach trained at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and is certified through the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. Marian is the founder of Road to Living Whole, LLC, creator of the Thrive Gluten-Free 12 Day Jumpstart, and shows you how easy it is to cook gluten-free on her YouTube Channel, Thrive Gluten-Free.
Her journey into the world of autoimmune disease and food sensitivities began with her search for getting healthy naturally and discovering her own food sensitivities. Marian used to suffer from chronic migraines and fatigue, and no doctor could tell her why. Through her journey to finding the right way of eating that makes her feel her best, she unintentionally excluded corn from her diet and her chronic migraines ceased and her quality of life improved. This game-changer marked her start into the world of food sensitivities related to chronic disease and quality of life. Wanting to know just how food interacts with the body, she started doing intensive research.
Unfortunately, autoimmune disease became front and center when her father’s doctors suspected he suffered from an autoimmune condition (they still have not pinpointed which one), and her daughter was born with Celiac disease. Through her training, research, and personal experience, Marian has made it her mission to show everyone who suffers from food sensitivities and autoimmune disease that they can heal the damage that has occurred, and reduce their symptoms almost entirely. We want you to live a life that is thriving, allowing you full and free reign to do all the things you love, from cooking and dining out, to traveling and just living life! It doesn’t have to be hard!
Once balance is found with medication and supplements, you must understand that there is more to the process. Again, we strongly recommend journaling to stay in tune with your body. Having a healthy diet allows huge strides to be made in the improvement of your health. Many people turn to the Autoimmune Protocol to jumpstart their health. This is a great tool to help you heal faster, but what about when the Protocol is over? Then what? With the many restrictions of the Autoimmune Protocol, it is easy to want to go crazy on foods that were once restricted after the Protocol is complete. We want this next step to be as easy as possible. You know by now that going gluten-free and low-grain, along with continuous elimination of other troublesome foods you know bother you, is essential but it is hard to know what that will look like and how to approach balance after extreme restriction.
We want to let you know that it can be easy to eat great for autoimmune disease. With all that you need to exclude from your diet, we are here to show you what you can add in. It is daunting and even unsettling when faced with the list of can’t-haves. We focus on what you can have and do, while providing delicious and nutritious recipes that we have tested and eat ourselves.
We are real people who do the research, read the science, and talk to the doctors about autoimmune disease and food. We are real people sharing our knowledge and personal experience to help other real people, just like you, live life healthily and happily. We do not believe in black and white rules or one-size-fits-all miracle foods
and it is essential to us that you know it is all about balance. We understand bio-individuality, and that
