Melodic Exercises for Jazz - Stanislav Borisov

Introduction

We all heard terms like improvisation, jazz language, phrasing etc...and many times people start thinking that all this is some kind of gift and just happens with jazz musicians or people that have some special musical skills.

The simple truth is that we are not really able to play things that we never practiced, due to the psychomotor requirements of the performance. Almost everybody has seen a little child attempting to grab a glass for first time in his life and it looks really difficult, but with the time it becomes something that just happens without any effort.

It is the same with jazz improvisation. The improviser needs to expand his knowledge and develop the technical and artistic abilities to a certain point that they become to produce it as spontaneous creative action. He needs to learn how to use the different musical elements, (rhythm, melody, harmony, arpeggios, scales, chords etc.) in order to be able to express himself through the instrument.

The exercises in this book are designed to extend your technical abilities, encourage your creativity and guide you through the complex process of creating music on the spot.
