    Homeopathy - Vikas Khatri

    ABC of Homeopathy

Homeopathy is the youngest medical faculty. Unlike other medicines, homeopathic medicines usually do not have any side effects. The reason for this is that homeopathic medicines act by stimulating the body’s own defence mechanism and healing powers. They do not have any chemical action, so they do not have the potential to cause any sustained damage. The doses are given in sub-physiological quantities. So they can be given to children and adults alike without worrying about the dosage. Homeopathy medicine is safe for everyone.

It is modern not only by its virtue of being young, but more significantly by the revolutionary medical philosophy that supports this science. The faculty is surmounting some of the orthodox concepts and out dated practices. Homeopathy is turning more scientific, more authentic, more user friendly and more effective. The evolving trend within the domain of the classical homoeopathy is more easily accessible for practitioners the world over.

The term ‘homeopathy’ is derived from the Greek words homeo, meaning similar, and ‘pathos’, meaning suffering or disease. Homeopathy is a gentle, holistic system of healing, suitable for everyone, young and old. It primarily concentrates on you as an individual, concentrating on treating your specific physical and emotional symptoms, to provide long lasting benefits.

The therapy is founded on the theory of treating like with like. Homeopathy serves as an alternative medical system. Alternative medical systems are built upon complete systems of theory and practice as against the conventional medical approach. It takes a different approach from conventional medicine in diagnosing, classifying, and treating medical problems.

    Features of Homeopathy

♦It seeks to stimulate the body’s defence mechanisms and processes so as to prevent or treat illness.

♦Treatment involves giving very small doses of substances called ‘remedies’ that, according to homeopathy, would produce the same or similar symptoms of illness in healthy people if they were given in larger doses.

♦The diagnosis and treatment in homeopathy is tailored to each patient according to the sickness. Homeopathic practitioners select remedies according to a total picture of the patient.

    Ancestry of Homeopathy

The principle of Homeopathy has been known since the time of Hippocrates- an ancient Greek Physician and the founder of medicine, around 450 BC. It is based on the Law of Similars. The term Similia Similibus Curanteur, meaning, ‘let likes be treated by likes’. A thousand years later, the Swiss alchemist Paracelsus employed a similar system of healing based upon the principle that says, Like cures Like. But it was not until the late 18th century that Homeopathy as it is practiced today was germinated by the great German physician, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. He was alarmed by the medical practitioners then, and set out to develop a method of healing which would be safe, gentle, and effective. He believed that human beings have a capacity for healing themselves and that the symptoms of disease reflect the individual’s struggle to overcome his illness. Over 200 years ago, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann propounded the principle that, what substance could cause in the way of symptoms, it could also cure. He was appalled by the effect that, certain drugs, when consumed by quite a healthy individual, produced symptoms that the drug was known to cure in sick. Hahnemann continued to experiment, noting that, every substance in taken, whether an herb, a mineral, an animal product or chemical compound, produced decisive distinct symptoms in the individual. He further noted that, no two substances produced exactly the same set of symptoms. Eventually, Hahnemann began to treat the sick, on the principle, likes can be treated by likes.

Dr. James Tyler Kent (1849 - 1916) was an American physician and a significant contributor to homeopathic medicine. His work came after Samuel Hahnemann and he proved many new remedies, which were not reckoned by Hahnemann. He is well- known for his Homeopathic Philosophy and for his book Lectures on Materia Medica, and Repertory known as Kent repertory, on virtually all modern practice of which homeopathy is based.

    History of Homeopathy

Samuel Hahnemann, who is regarded as the father of Homeopathy, was a German physician who earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1779. At the time of his graduation, scientific advances emerged in the fields of chemistry, physics, physiology and anatomy. The clinical practice of medicine, however, was dominant with superstition and lack of scientific rigor. The treatments of the day, such as purgatives, bleeding, blistering plasters, herbal preparations and emetics lacked a rational basis and were more harmful than effective. Hahnemann recognized this and wrote a critical account of current practices in several papers on topics such as Arsenic poisoning, hygiene, dietetics and psychiatric treatment.

Hahnemann and colleagues began testing various substances to determine the types of symptoms they produced. These results suggested Hahnemann what the drugs would be useful to treat. Hahnemann reasoned that doses of these substances that produced overt symptoms would be inappropriate for treatment of diseases with the same symptoms. Thus he advocated reduction of the dose to minute levels by multiple serial dilutions of ten or hundred fold. Hahnemann practiced Homeopathic medicine for almost 50 years until his death in 1843.

Homeopathy had a large impact on the practice of medicine. The first homeopathic hospital opened in 1832 and homeopathic medical schools opened all over Europe. Homeopathic hospitals and practitioners often had better outcomes compared to their allopathic counterparts. Thus the general public began to boast the benefits of homeopathy and demand better treatment from all physicians.

Homeopathy turned spectacularly popular in the United States and Europe in the 1800s and its strongest advocates included European royalty, American entrepreneurs, literary giants, and religious leaders. But, at that point in time, when it was gaining speedy popularity, it became the object of deep-seated animosity and Argus- eyed opposition as against the establishment medicine.

Homeopathy was first established in Britain by Dr Frederick Quin (1799-1878) around 1827, though two Italian homeopathic doctors (Drs Romani and Roberta) had been employed two years previously by the Earl of Shrewsbury based at Alton Towers in North Staffordshire. Homeopathy in the UK quickly became the preferred medical treatment of the upper classes. At its peak in the 1870s Britain had numerous homeopathic dispensaries and small hospitals as well as large busy hospitals in Liverpool, Birmingham, almost exclusively funded and run by members of the local aristocracy.

    Homeopathy in India

Homeopathy in India flourished right from 1810 when this alternative medicine was introduced by German doctors and missionaries. The ideological basis of homoeopathy appealed to Indian doctors, and it did not take long for India to imbibe this unique medical system.

A medical approach to homeopathy would define it as the art and the science of healing the sick by using substances capable of causing the same symptoms, syndromes and conditions when administered to healthy people. It is mainly a therapeutic cure based on nature’s fundamental laws brought into practice to heal the patients by its holistic touch. Also known as the traditional Indian medicine, homeopathy is based on the Law of Similars. The truth of this law has been verified experimentally and clinically for the last 200 years.

A peep into the history of homeopathy would lead one to Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of this holistic science. He was an Allopathic M.D. physician by profession and a researcher in medicine. The elements of homeopathy lie in its use to treat acute conditions for the patients that need a complete recovery. It also enhances the mind-body connection and also treatment for some chronic conditions. And according to the diagnosis and the treatment procedure, the homeopathic practitioners treat the person who is sick and not the body parts. They believe in curing the individual not parts by parts. Thus, in homeopathic treatment different persons with the same disease may not get the same medicine. The practitioner decides the remedy based on the individual.

Homeopathy in India is an answer to several malignant diseases, including cancer and AIDS. Apart from these chronic diseases like arthritis, asthma, skin disorders, others can also be cured with the aid of homeopathic medicines. For years several myths about homeopathy misled people. However with time these myths were dispelled and today homeopathy in contemporary India is one of the most popular ways of treatment. To achieve this end numerous Indian homeopathic practitioners have laboured hard.
