Reiki For Healing - Vikas Khatri

    ABC of Reiki

Ever since ancient times to modern scientific era, Human knowledge and observations have established the fact that a Human body is more than flesh, bones and blood. A mysterious energy governs our body and mind. This very energy envelops our body in manifestation of rainbow colours known as Aura.

This basic life force energy runs through our physical and subtle body and administers their proper functioning and well being. Be it all-powerful Yoga and Pranayam, Pranic healing, Crystal healing, to subtle intricacies of Martial arts, many streams of practices are devoted for understanding and enhancing this very life force.

Reiki is one such powerful technique that has originated in Japan. It describes an ancient healing art and science whose principles are closely aligned with those of acupuncture and Shiatsu massage.

Reiki is one of the unique forms of energy work where perceived universal life force is focused through the practitioner to the patient. In other words, a practitioner, who is an expert in channelising this very Life force, treats the Patient by balancing his vital flow in the body.

Reiki, being a therapy with Eastern concepts of energy flow, is based on the seven energy centers in the human body. It is the practice of transmitting healing energy through the hands, based on simple, ancient healing techniques. Reiki uses specific hand positions, on or above parts of the body that correspond to the major organs and energy centers, such as the heart or adrenal glands. Because the purpose of Reiki is to increase one’s own self-healing powers, it is helpful for any sort of ailment - physical, mental or emotional.

Reiki treats the person as a whole and produces many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well-being. Even though the influence of Reiki varies from person to person, and disease to disease, many have reported miraculous results.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

In many cases, the effect is immediate. And in many, it takes specific course and time to work out the root of the problem. Though the therapy cannot replace the immediate first aid like in case of a heart attack, nor it can replace the necessity of emergency operations, Reiki sessions definitely help in speedy and painless, full recovery. That is why it is considered therapeutic prime assistance with other therapies.

Reiki consists of particular patterns of healing by the practitioner. Hands on method guides the vital energy from an expert’s hands to the patient’s aura. This boosts the self-healing and immune system of the patient. He is not only able to fight off diseases and malfunctioning effectively, but also heal quickly if under any illness. The transformation that’s physical, psychological as well as in some cases spiritual, enables the person to live a more fulfilled and productive life thereafter.

The techniques can be practiced on animal, plants, and interestingly on objects such as crystals and water to empower their inherent healing abilities.

Reiki has taken a strong hold all round the world. The journey since ancient times of Buddha to modern worldwide practitioners has been a mysterious as well as popular one. Clearly, Reiki has attracted due attention from today’s scientists to common man. The popularity itself vouches for its immense effects. Still, What makes Reiki unique is that it incorporates elements of just about every other alternative healing practice such as spiritual healing, auras, crystals, Chakra balancing, meditation, aromatherapy, naturopathy, and homeopathy.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. Irrespective of any dogma, race, sect, age, sex or nationality, it has the ability to function even without the belief in it. More than not, people practising Reiki gets in touch with their inner spiritual self and hence the practice is said to have a strong relation with GOD. All people touched with the divine duty to heal are also full of Human love in their lives.

In short, Reiki, in more than one ways, is touching millions of lives worldwide.

    Origin of Reiki

Reiki is known to be an ancient technique developed by seers in Tibet several thousand years ago. Knowledge seekers in the Orient studied energies and developed a system of sounds and symbols for universal healing techniques. Interestingly, it is this rich heritage of India that has transcended various healing system. Spiritual practices being common, the study of energetics were applied in Yoga, Ayurveda, martial arts and many more. Many different cultural manifestations emerged from this single root system. Unfortunately, the original source of Reiki itself was forgotten. Many people believe Reiki to be originated from Gautam Buddha.

Introduction of Reiki in Modern World

Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian educator in Kyoto, Japan, was also a Tendai Buddhist. In the end of the last century, he undertook many years of intensive search in the writings of the disciples of Gautam Buddha. Usui studied in a Buddhist monastery. By studying ancient sutras, he discovered ancient sounds and symbols that are linked directly to the human body and nervous system, which activate the universal life energy for healing.

Another story conveys that after a subsequent 21-day period of fasting and meditation, he was given an initiation into this art through universal life forces. From this point of time onwards Dr. Usui possessed the ability to transfer Reiki energy and assist other human beings to become channels of Reiki energy. In this way, Reiki is said to be rediscovered in the mid to late 1800s. Usui then underwent a metaphysical experience and became empowered to use these sounds and symbols to heal. From hereon, he began an extensive twenty-one-year study of the healing phenomena of history’s greatest spiritual leaders. He called this form of healing Reiki and taught it throughout Japan until his death around 1893.

There are many forms of Reiki being practiced now. The two principal ones are: the Usui System of Natural Healing and the Radiance Technique. The Usui System of Natural Healing balances and strengthens the body’s energy, promoting its ability to heal itself. However, some schools of Reiki believe that Usui was pursuing knowledge of healing as the studies undertaken of traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, Qigong and Yoga. The tradition was passed through several grandmasters of Reiki such as Dr. Chujiro Hyashi, Hawayo Takata, and Phyllis Lei Furumoto.

One of his disciples, the naval doctor Chujiro Hayashi, stressed physical healing and taught a more codified and simpler set of Reiki techniques. Hayashi’s contributed for his self developed set of fixed hand positions to be used in the course of a treatment. Usui himself preferred a method called scanning, through which he detected imbalances, and said that the hand positions were for beginners. Hayashi initiated and trained Mrs. Hawayo Takata, who brought Reiki to the USA. Reiki was introduced to the Western world in the mid-1970s. Since then its use has spread worldwide in a dramatic fashion.

Hawayo Takata claimed that, after developing the Reiki methodology, as well as receiving the spiritual ability to practice it, Usui went to the slums of Tokyo to attempt the healing of beggars. However, after several years of very little success, he claimed that even after repeated treatment, it was their mindset that kept them ill. Usui then decided that there should be an energy exchange in return for a Reiki treatment. This energy exchange may take the form of cash payment, or a trade of some sort. The idea is that the patient is expected to regard the treatment as having a value up front and is prepared to invest himself/herself in the healing process.

Reiki in India gained its momentum in early 90's. Since then its popularity and followership has been phenomenal and quite substantial. Today there are about 1,000,000 practitioners in India.

    Reiki Principles

The principles of Reiki were laid down by Usui Sensei as the guiding light to all his followers and future practitioners. Reiki as a system devoted to the wholehearted fulfillment in life incorporates these simple principles, which are all effective for anyone to find inner peace and happiness. According to Dr. Usui, The secret of inviting happiness, the spiritual medicine for all illness, is that just for today, do not get angry, do not worry, express your thanks, be diligent in your work, and be kind to others. Repeat them in the mind at the beginning and the end of each day.

Although the extension of principles vary from master to master, these basics are not specific just for Reiki, but for practice in general life:

Don’t get angry just for today.

This guiding principle is much difficult to follow than the way it seems. One never knows what actions of others spark off this destructive negative feeling. One may remember the rule but in the heat of the moment might feel that he/ she is entitled to his/her own feelings. But this justification doesn’t hold much, as by this simple rule Dr. Usui wanted to show just how downright trivial the things usually are that spark our anger. And how indescribable the loss of vital positive energy force is while angry. Not only that, by constantly remembering this rule, we imbibe the idea of being master of our own feelings rather than being slave of Anger. On day-by-day basis, we will gather and respect the attainment of positive energy by applying this rule. Hence, this principle strikes a core chord with basis of Reiki.

Do not worry just for today

This is another principle, which again prevents us from being slave of another destructive force in our life, namely worry. Worry is a natural and continuous process, sometimes without us being aware of its presence. Daily chores
