    First published in 1959, “The Measure of a Man” is a collection of two influential sermons given by Martin Luther King, Jr. at the first National Conference on Christian Education of the United Church of Christ at Purdue University in August 1958. The two sermons, “What is Man?” and “The Dimensions of a Complete Life”, were printed together and published as “The Measure of a Man” by the Christian Education Press with the consent of King the following year. These sermons reflect ideas that King first began to develop during his days in the seminary and address what King believed to be “one of the most important questions confronting any generation”. He argued that the answer to what precisely made us human and different from other animals was complicated as we are biological beings, but also beings of spirit and thought. King argued that while we are made in the image of God and thus have a connection to the divine and perfect, we are also sinners in need of divine grace from God, our Creator. King’s sermons are as thought-provoking and inspiring now as when he gave them and remain an important addition to his body of work.

    Clayborne Carson is Director and Senior Editor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Papers Project. A history professor at Stanford University, he is the author of In Struggle: SNCC and the Black Awakening of the 1960s (1981) and editor of Knock at Midnight: Inspiration from the Great Sermons of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. (1998) and Malcolm X: The FBI File (1991). Susan Carson, managing editor, holds an M.L.S. from San Jose State University. She joined the Martin Luther King, Jr., Papers Project in 1987 as the librarian and archivist. Adrienne Clay, assistant editor, is a graduate of Colby College. A participant in the 1996 King Summer Research Fellowship program, Adrienne joined the staff of the Project in 1997. Kieran Taylor, assistant editor, earned an M.A. in southern studies from the University of Mississippi. He worked as a reporter and community organizer before joining the Project in 1997. Virginia Shadron earned a Ph.D. in American studies from Emory University.

      Two sermons together on what it is to be a man. Simple and straightforward. Truth that we need reminded of on a daily basis.

      I just can't enough of the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. These two meditations read like eloquent dvar torahs. Mind-prying stuff. His moral clarity is profound. Now that I've gotten a taste of many of his speeches and small books, it's on to the big ones for full absorption.
