Greg Vanden Berge
Born, raised and still living in Southern California, United States of America. I don't know if I would consider myself to be another typical high school dropout, but in the 11th grade I took and passed a high school equivalency test that allowed me to leave school one year early. From then on it was the school of hard knocks and when I finally figured out this wasn't going to work, became a student of life. I have over 35 years of experience building, remodeling and repairing apartments, condominiums, residential homes and commercial as well as industrial properties. My interests are history, psychology, business, construction, gardening and thoroughly enjoy sharing the things I've learned with anyone willing to listen. There is nothing better than spending time with friends and family having a wonderful meal, a few beers and intelligent conversation.

Introduction
This book is part one of a series of stair building books written for professionals as well as do-it-yourselfers for certain types of stairways.
This book will also be included in some of our other stair building books and it will not need to be purchased separately.
Make sure you purchase the book that will match the type of stairway you’re planning on building. For example if you’re going to build a winder type stairway then purchase the book on winder type stairways.
This book will provide you with detailed information on how you can design and cut the parts to assemble a conventionally framed straight stairway using construction standard or engineered lumber.
Other books that are currently on the market are listed below.
Simplified Stair Building - Is a book designed and written for straight stairways.
Simplified Stair Building With Landings - Is a book designed and written for stairways with landings or platforms.
Simplified Bracket Stair Building - Is a book designed and written for stairways that will be using metal brackets or building hardware to connect the treads to the stringer.
What is a Stairway
A stairway or set of stairs is usually a series of steps used to take you from a lower level to an upper-level.

Recommend using 16d nails for materials between an inch and one quarter (1 1/4) and an inch and a half (1 1/2
).
Recommend using 8d nails for materials between one half-inch (1/2) and three quarters of an inch (3/4
).
I can’t recommend screw sizes, because some building departments and engineers don’t recommend them to be used for assembling stairs using construction standard lumber.
I also recommend using galvanized or stainless steel nails for building exterior
stairs out of wood.
