THE DEAD CHURCH

“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, ‘These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God.” – Revelation 3:1-2

The church at Sardis gathered for their normal morning worship to listen to a letter that they received from the Apostle John. The letter started off with a majestic vision of Jesus. They heard Jesus’ warning to Ephesus because they had lost their first love, then they heard Him comforting the church at Smyrna and His challenge to Pergamum for their compromised faith. They heard how Thyatira was reprimanded for tolerating false teaching and fornication in the church. Then it is the turn of Sardis and in the hushed – Revelation 3:1
