    Enemy Queen - Rigel Ailur

    Enemy Queen

    Rigel Ailur

Lady Funikoshi," Kenji Nakamura stepped from the pristine office into her equally neat bedroom—their bedroom, he reminded himself, still disbelieving his wonderful fortune. He crossed the small, ornate cabin to where she stood gazing out the window.

Captain Nakamura. She didn't turn at his arrival.

Kenji moved behind her to see what had her so transfixed, but out the oval portal he glimpsed only the blue ocean of the harbor. The queen announced her son's engagement. He draped his arms around her shoulders. Ships bearing gifts will be sailing for Kaltale.

She wrapped her own arms around his as she melted into him. Perfect.

He smiled at the satisfaction in her voice. It irked his beloved that Kaltale, one of the few local kingdoms strong enough to stand against her, didn't pay tribute. So the pirate queen plundered their ships and took solace in knowing they considered her Dragon Fleet the bane of their—considerable—maritime trade.

Do you want the whole fleet out? With difficulty, he concentrated on matters of the sea, instead of on the slim, strong body pressing against his. The heady fragrance of jasmine, despite its subtlety, threatened to distract him completely from business.

Just half. I think thirty ships will do. She sighed in contentment, resting her head back against his shoulder and nearly obliterating all his thoughts of duty completely.

He forced himself to focus, putting aside amorous thoughts and with great difficulty ignoring the heat suffusing his body and heart pounding in his ears. Instead he asked about her flagship, the majestic vessel from which she ruled the far-flung seas, and which he captained for her. "And the Dragon Empress? No change?"

No change, she confirmed. "We'll sail with the Sea Dragon and the Blue Fire Dragon. Sailing in trios, their fleet rarely faced targets they couldn't overcome—and easily. As soon as we can be ready."

Through the brass-rimmed portal, movement caught his attention and he saw why she'd been rooted to the spot.

A pod of whales, dozens of them, frolicked and played. He spotted a number of calves, some 'tiny' at a 'mere' ton or two, breaching and cavorting among the huge cetaceans who protectively kept the youngsters toward the center of the group.

    A good omen indeed.

So long as it bode well for the Dragon Fleet and not for the queen of Kaltale.

    Kenji buried his lips
