About this ebook
To be fulfilled is a fate that too few people experience. This sensation of being at peace with your own existence and accepting of the realities of life, despite their harshness, is liberating. One day, if you can feel as though you have gotten as close to “living the good life” as possible, given your current circumstances (whatever they may be), I would be very happy for you. That might be one of the greatest accomplishments any person can achieve, and it would make your journey quite satisfying.
I can’t promise that this book will reveal all the answers to conquering your personal problems. I also can’t guarantee that you will find this text useful. However, I can assure you that I crafted these chapters with those goals in mind. I sought to create a rough outline that a person can follow to get closer to fulfillment. My hope is that you can harness these words and find the motivation to move yourself forward. Regardless of who you are, I wish the best for you. Life is hard enough without any additional burdens, perhaps we can find a way to lighten the load together.

To be fulfilled is a fate that too few people experience. This sensation of being at peace with your own existence and accepting of the realities of life, despite their harshness, is liberating. One day, if you can feel as though you have gotten as close to living the good life
as possible, given your current circumstances (whatever they may be), I would be very happy for you.
I have always been fascinated with the human experience. How each of us seem to have an entirely unique lens through which we view the world. The world is what it is. Physically, it does not change simply due to the beholder. This is the constant. The laws and foundations of our universe. What differs across the board is how we interact with this absolute entity and the experiences we derive from it. An event can trigger within one person’s path while it remains dormant in another. These unique circumstances are what craft much of our perspective. Everyone’s is different.
Despite that, there are some fundamental things that we share. We long to be accepted. We are doomed to face hardships. We thirst for purpose. The list is lengthier than just that, but common characteristics such as these form the basis of my book. What does the human journey approximately resemble and what are shared pillars we can uphold to make the experience more bearable?
I hope that you will begin to discover the answer to these questions within the following chapters.
Pillar 1: Guts Over Fear
What exactly is fear?
We’ve all experienced this phenomenon but putting the sensation into words is difficult. It produces apprehension, it inhibits action, it is paralyzing and worst of all, it might feel like you can’t control it.
This natural response of the brain is as old as humanity itself. It is the autopilot that attempts to steer us away from danger and further, death itself. For the vast majority of human existence, the world was nothing but constant danger. Predators stalked our ancestors, famines ravaged the earth, comforts of modern living were nothing more than fantasies. It is no wonder that biologically we developed this mechanism to assist with navigating daily perils.
Fundamentally, fear is rooted in the unknown. If you hear a rustle in a nearby bush, that could be a predator. Of course, it may have also just been a rabbit. The difference between these two possibilities was life or death in the ages of the past. Would a predator maul you or would you scare off a small scavenger? The unknown is what generates fear in this equation. The path before you could be pleasant or hellish. Worst of all, you probably would not find out until it was too late to pivot. The fact is, we can’t immediately tell what awaits us based on our limited understanding of that particular situation.
Our psyche races, trying to weight probabilities, determining likelihoods and this can be overwhelming. Let us presume that a danger does exist in that bush. What are the odds that you survive an encounter with an apex predator? Death is almost assured. That realization is paralyzing. You would wish you never strayed here in the first place.
An interesting change in mindset occurs once the unknown has been exposed though. If a rabbit emerges from the shadows, instantly we are relieved. We bask in the discovery that our imagined doom was nothing more than our mind conjuring the worst-case scenario. The environment is no longer fearsome.
If a predator were to emerge though, the equation would not be fundamentally different. That may sound weird, but it is true. Fear would dissipate even in that context. We would shift into a fight-or-flight mode. Ready to do what is necessary to survive. Adrenaline would pump through our bodies, compelling us to act. The unknown has surfaced and now we must respond.
Of course, you will likely still be scared but that isn’t the predominant mode of reasoning anymore. Fear has taken a backseat to action. Survival, which can be defined as success in this situation, has become the chief concern and that will power you throughout the encounter.
The key lesson here is that fear is strongest given a mysterious terrain. Once we become familiar with whatever lurks in this realm of possibilities, we can respond. If we shed light on the shadows, they become less terrifying. We confirm what reality is and we act accordingly. You may still be overwhelmed by this predator, but often, the unknown is more paralyzing than the truth.
Now, let us look at this phenomenon through a modern lens. Of course, a predator attack is the least of your worries in a developed society. The previous example may be hard to relate with. In our current environment, other things have filled the void though.
First, we should not forget how fast humanity has advanced in a relatively short span of time. These predatorial concerns were valid only a few short centuries ago. Predators struck fear into the hearts of our not-so-distant ancestors. Biology takes millennia to develop and evolve. From an evolutionary standpoint, we are not far removed. Fear was a powerful tool for helping humans diagnose danger. It could have spelled the difference between walking into a lion’s den or forging a divergent path. In fact, without fear, it is likely our species would have long been extinct.
To have been unable to differentiate between what to avoid and what to indulge in would be disastrous. In a world of constant threats, laying low had its merit. Today though, we have less need for this capacity given the relative peace we experience. Our biological wiring hasn’t gotten the memo yet. This is because in the grand scheme of existence, the past couple hundred years have only been a drop in the bucket.
We are very much still programmed with these fear-sensitive instincts. Enough time has not passed to alter their calibration. If you took someone from the middle ages and plotted them in modern society, they would believe they reached heaven. It is easy to forget this, but that is the reality.
We have the unique luxury of disregarding fear because in most cases, our lives don’t depend on the outcome. This is a liberating realization. We can take risks and we will survive. Of course, within reason. Skydiving without a parachute is more closely described as folly. Although it may feel as though the unknown can be our undoing, it probably won’t be if we act rationally.
We can pursue things like self development and not be crushed by the consequences that come with varying degrees of failure. We can take a chance and engage with fear because the stakes are not as they once were. Even if the fear proves itself to be correct, what is the worst that can happen? If you fear public speaking and make a blunder, you can try again. That is powerful. We have a freedom that many lines of humanity could never have dreamed of.
Now, back
