CHAPTER 1
THE FALL OF EILEEN WU
Yesterday
Eileen Wu didn’t know how much longer she could hold on. She couldn’t find a footing for her right foot. Her left foot was supporting most of her weight, even if it only had a three-inch ledge to stand on. She was clinging to the root above her head, but the root was dirty, and her hands were sweaty. She kept slipping down little by little.
Eileen looked over her shoulder. Below her was at least a six-story drop. She remembered reading on the Internet that humans can only hope to survive a four-story fall. Anything more was virtually impossible to live through.
As she looked down the cliff face at the waves breaking on the rocks below, Eileen wished she didn’t know that fact. But more than anything, she wished she hadn’t gone hiking at all today.
Everything had started out normally enough. Eileen had told her mom she was heading to Travels Island, a nature preserve an hour from her home in Savannah, Georgia, to do some hiking. She’d put on her favorite pair of capris, the ones with the rugged knee patches that could take a fall. She’d brought her phone, in case she needed to make an emergency call, and so she could listen to music. She’d packed a backpack full of the essentials: snacks,
