Plan for PLENTY

There’s a standing joke in my family, and it re-emerges every time we’re eating coleslaw. It harks back to a long-ago summer when I grew so many cabbages I had to take a wheelbarrow of them to the local camping ground and give them away before they went to waste! It’s a good reminder that no matter how well a fruit or vegetable grows for us, food waste can occur even in our own gardens. So just how do you you grow food for your family without over- (or under-) catering? It’s all about planning – and it’s a lot simpler than you may think.

BACK TO BASICS

Planning an edible garden begins with understanding what those who benefit from it actually to eat. There’s no point in growing a whole row of parsnips when four or five will more than satisfy the needs of the one person in the family who enjoys them. And when you’ve bent over backwards to get the kids to eat radishes and they still say they loathe them, perhaps it’s time you skipped sowing this one!
