Bread-baking day during their summer holidays in the Cederberg is still to this day one of the best memories of her life. It was a whole process, remembers Nelia Richter, assistant editor of Landbou-weekblad. ‘From the exact amount of coals to put on top of the pot to opening the lid with everyone standing around to admire the masterpiece, and then obviously the big tasting.’
In the lockdown period, she, like so many people around the world, sought comfort in baking. She quotes Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky: ‘There is nothing more indisputable than bread.’
