MOST average ornamental gardens in the UK look their best up to midsummer’s day in late June, after which they go through a gentle, managed decline until winter. Depending on how the garden is planted, there will be high spots in this period with bursts of colour from late-flowering shrubs, perennials and annuals. However, holes will start to appear as annuals that have gone over are removed, and the dying foliage of perennials and bulbs is cut back.
